No explanation of the meaning: Go stand on your head and spit aspirin.

But this one about time is self explanatory: Two hairs past a freckle.

And when I was very young: Stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about.

And because there were 8 kids in the house: Go outside and fight.

And in Cub Scouts: The best way to catch a bird is put salt on it's tail.

My grandpa said the same thing about dogs. If you have 1 dog, you have a dog. If you have 2 dogs you have half a dog. If you have 3 dogs you don't have a dog.

Friend once said his dad told him “if it has teats or tires sooner or later it'll give ya trouble!”

I work around civil construction, on all sides - design, layout, operating equipment, supervision and even inspection. I’ve seen a lot of really dumb stuff and have my own saying about some of the people I’ve had to deal with.

”He don’t know which end of a bulldozer pushes dirt “

I remember one my dad said when it fit.   "He's a DA and I don't mean district attorney"

A pipefitter Iowaboy and myself used to work with said of a fellow that went through apprenticeship with us; That guy would rather climb a tree and lie to you than stand on the ground and tell the truth!

He also use to like to say "I'm so poor if it cost 5 cents to poop, I'd have to throw up instead." Cleaned up version.

For people always in a hurry. “Born a day late, trying to make up for lost time”

While tapping on my head with his index finger..."that thing up there...use it!" That was when he thought I wasn't using common sense or did something stupid.

Another when I was getting ready to go out for the evening on a Friday or Saturday night..."be sure to keep your nose clean!"

My Mom was famous for "What in the Sam Hill is going on here?"      I always wondered who in the heck Sam Hill was.

Sam Hill was popular in our house too!  I remember my grandma saying it. She was born in 1916, so it has spanned many generations. Who in the sam hill is Sam Hill?

She also told about during the depression they would put mousetraps on top of fence posts to catch sparrows. They would put the breasts in soup.

The DT&I Railroad also makes the curve west to detroit near our farm. She would tell how they would jump onto the coal car when it was on the curve, and neither the engine or the caboose could see them throwing coal off. She always said "old Mr. Ford had enough money that he wouldn't miss a few pounds of coal"

Dad referred to a fellow that helped on the farm back in the day as being at least: "2 pints short of a gallon".

Samuel W Hill's propensity for profanity was legendary. Whenever his friends and neighbors would retell his colorful tales, they would substitute "Sam Hill" for the cuss words. Eventually, the phrase "What in Sam Hill?" spread beyond the Keweenaw Peninsula to become part of the American language.[5]

...one thing my Dad used to say...this  every thing from looking at some mechanical disaster...to being up in the hills somewhere...and thinking of the ''quickest way ''   back to base etc

""The longest way home is usually the quickest..''

That bit of home spun philosophy is so bloody relevant....even today as ''off sider '' and self prepare to break the track chain on a small Fiat   track machine...owned by the Canadians that I am currently doing the final logging job on their place..

Lovely Folk..but no idea of machinery and its basic care ..thus the Fiat  sat outside for two years...with a rotary slasher on its three point linkage....on level ground....with the  handbrake reefed up tight as the proverbial...

Hence the brakes are frozen so tight that the D5H as an anchor..and the PC200 as the ''persuader' couldn't break the rust free ,via chains to the grousers...(without doing more damage....)

The whole final drive assembly has to come off...most certainly   the ''longest way home''  :)
