auto darkening helmet

My helmet seems to be slow darkening even though set on high sensitivety and quick response. I am thinking it is because I don't weld much any more and the battery has lost charge. I have been sitting it outside in direct sunlight but have not tried it yet. Am I on the right track or do I need a new battery, lens or helmet?

You can try a new battery but in my experience auto darkening helmets eventually fail. I have a Century branded helmet now and I despise the thing. Won’t buy another one. Or anything Hobart branded. They didn’t last.

My Brother welds much more than I do and says the Lowes store brand appears to be the best he has used. My harbour freight one does not always darken, it is at least 10 years old and I intend to replace it in 2026.

I have put batteries in mine, but there was no lag leading up to it. It worked until the battery was dead, then didn't darken at all. I had a Jackson for a long time that did fail, then replaced it with the cheapest off brand the welding store had. It's been working fine for years.

Mine is a Miller with one set of (light receivers?) I don’t know what they’re called, dad’s is also a Miller with 2 sets. They need the batteries changed routinely, and bargain coin batteries don’t seem to work, Miller, Duracell and Panasonic seem to be fine.

I have a Miller that I’ve had for about 15 years. I don’t weld much anymore but it still works great when I use it. It might sit for 4-5 months between  uses and I’ve never put a new battery in it.

I have a miller and have changed batteries once in it. No complaints. I also have a 3M that works well.

I've had no trouble with two pairs of harbor freight ones. That said I don't weld all the time, but I haven't been flashed in them.

I'm on my second one from Harbor freight.  First one got wet one to many times. 

My (step)son is a metal fabricator.  He uses an expensive miller auto hood.  He says they are much better (more adjustable, etc). 

I don't use mine enough and would probably tear it up anyway!

I don’t know about the OP’s problem, but I also have a Miller. The view when welding on cheap helmets leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion.  The more expensive ones are just so much more clear when dark. A lot of times bad equipment will make you look like you don’t know what you’re doing.

We bought a miller digital elite about 12-15 years ago. Still going strong. Change the batteries once a year or so and the lens protectors at the same time. It’s like putting on a new pair of glasses when you change the lens lol.

I bought any auto helmet years ago. Don’t remember the brand. It worked until it didn’t about 3 years ago. Dad bought another auto darkening helmet ESAB I think. He needs a magnifier in it. I don’t feel like switching it out if it’s a quick job. I’ll just use a standard helmet. If it’s a longer welding job or in a awkward position where a head flick won’t easily bring the helmet down I’ll use the auto helmet

Bought my helmet in 2005 auto darkening huntsman never sat more than a few weeks without welding. 3rd set of headgear it doesnt owe me anything 400 bucks was a lot of money then. Dont go cheap your eyes are worth spending money

I for one do not need any help looking like I don’t know what I am doing, I can do that all by myself!

Mine is a Miller and occasionally needs batteries. I have a magnifier in it and it really could use a new lens protector, I just don't remember it until I use it then quickly forget.

I worked for a steel erection company years ago and we all had this style Miller. The one I currently have is at least 10 years. I put batteries in it once or twice, but other than that, it’s been trouble free.

I have Miller that works good. Have a hobart from TSC works ok but the head gear is crap.

I had one from TSC, my eyes used to hurt after using it, dad insisted I throw it out, it didn’t have a changeable battery I don’t think. I think it was just a little slow on the uptake, but i couldn’t actually tell if I was getting flashed.

I have used cheaters for many years. I keep a extra hood in the truck. Nothing like being out in the middle of nowhere and hood quits working or dropping it.

I have one from TSC that worked pretty good until the head band broke last summer. It being over 20 years old and not being sure what brand made it to find a band. I came up with something that kinda works but not really right at the same time ( just didn't fit right no matter how you adjusted it) It got demoted to spare and the spare promoted for the time being. 

Did get a new Forney for Christmas from their pro line. Great investment because I still haven't pulled it out from the packaging yet. Haven't had to weld anything since November so that's nice.

My dad has a cheater lens in his, I absolutely cannot do a thing with it. My helmet was his, and it had the magnifying lens and a big blower thing to keep it from fogging. I removed both, it weighed 5 lbs

Here’s the new one I got for Christmas last year and I finally went to use it about three months ago and the battery was dead. Got a battery and used it for a few hours. Very nice helmet. Grinding is nice with it too! Flip the auto shield up and it has the wide view lens.

Same here the X-mode works great in the sunlight
