Hauling tractor from Manitoba to ND ??

 Possibly making a deal on an old IH tractor in Canada. Plan on going to look at it, will take a trailer with so we can bring it home right away if we make a deal.

Have passport but got to thinking if bringing a tractor back is going to be an issue at the border? has anyone on here had any recent experience with this?

Plan on calling port of entry for information.

I have a friend in Canada who was going to bring me a Cub Cadet. He's been to my place in ND a couple of times buying vehicles from me but he hasn't been able to get the Cub Cadet across the border. I don't know what the issue is, but he said he might be able to bring it in pieces but can't get the whole thing across. He comes to ND a couple times a year and takes back old car parts. He can take back a complete vehicle as long as he has a valid title for it.

I’m a long way from the border, but given the state of things currently I think I would figure on problems. I think I would want to contact someone who specializes in this and know for sure before being at the border and trying to get through. Given the fact that’s it’s very old, it probably depends a lot on the mood of whoever you have to deal with that day.

Is this tractor a private deal or at a dealer?  A dealer would likely be able to put together the paperwork to get you across the border.

Back in 2008 I bought a then 8 year old CIH in Manitoba and took it back to IA.  I needed my birth certificate to get back in the US, and paperwork to prove I owned the tractor and that it was built to US EPA standards.  When I came back into the US I did went through the "tourist" side of the entry rather than the commercial side as I reasoned I was not hauling for hire; I just happened to have a very large souvenir from a short trip into Canada.

On the internet. It appears you need the bill of sale clearly filled out. A bill of laden , everything has to be clean and have appropriate identification. I live 50 miles south of border and equipment crosses all the time but best bet is talk to border agents on both sides. Also what we find is helpful sometimes is to stop at US side and tell them what you are doing before crossing into Canada

Have a buddy who’s dad has brought many pieces of equipment north into Manitoba from the States relatively easily over the last 40 years. Used farm equipment seems to cross much easier than a licensed vehicle or other items as long as the required paperwork is filled out properly. I have brought used parts across the border from North Dakota with nothing but a bill of sale, but that’s a couple years ago. I don’t know how the current political situation may have changed anything.  You could always buy it and I could keep it at my place!

During covid we bought a 3488 in Canada. The only way at the time was for us to go to the border and drive it across. My dad went up with the truck driver and brought back covid. But it was a different world during covid.

Thanks for the replies. Called border crossing and talked to 2 different agents. Kinda got 2 different stories on what to expect. One agent I could tell would be very by the book. the other agent told me If he was at the border I would have no problem. Main thing is that the tractor was made in the US so their will be no duty or tariff, it is old and a collectible being sold by a private individual to another private individual for their own use. So hopefully It should not be a problem brining it back.

I personally don't know about what you need to cross. Good luck to you. Will be watching about how it was for you crossing.  I know it's a lot harder now to gross then when I crossed back in the late 80's driving semi.

Not sure about going south but I know coming in to Canada there was something about any self-propelled piece of equipment had to be very clean, not a spec of dirt on it. Was something about it taking 3 days to get cleared to bring across too. Can't remember if it was from purchase date? It's been 15 years though so I don't fully remember. I drove a 4wd tractor and a air drill from ND to Manitoba and it wasn't much of an issue at all. All the paperwork was done ahead of time though. US customs had to inspect the tractor at the crossing to make sure it was dirt free leaving the US. Air drill didn't matter though, which blew me away. I thought dirt is dirt, but whatever I guess. Canadian side didn't seem to care much and had no issues. They also didn't care enough to come out to stop traffic since I had to go in the southbound lane to get across.

Will be going to a farm somewhere NW of Brandon MB. Just haven't been able to get together on it yet, the weather is either bad here or there or both.

Owner has to come from Winnipeg. Planned on going Tuesday but sounds like a bit of snow at the farm again so wait for the weather to get better.

Where you coming from in ND. If you are going to Brandon on hwy 3 crossing you are going through my hometown.

Maybe hire a carrier to bring it over the border? A truck that crosses with stuff like this regularly knows the rules and probably gets less hassle.

Brother brought a JCB Fasttrac down to Nebraska about 6 years ago. I think he had the dealer get it across the border though. That was during Covid and he couldn’t go look at it.

A quick search says you need proof the equipment is made in the US with no improvements done in Canada and a 6059 Customs declaration and or 3311 declaration for return of US made goods

Well finally made it to Canada to get the tractor. Border crossing either way was no issue, just had to claim cash we had with us. Very happy with the condition of the old Titan. Brought it home yesterday 4-19-26. Still some snow around Minnedosa and Rapid City MB. Will be looking for an original water tank, so if anyone knows of where to find one would appreciate you letting me know.
