460 Posted December 28, 2025 Posted December 28, 2025 After recovery of fighting a cold, the last week or so. Finally getting the big bore 351 prepared to build. Machining was finished late summer, waited to build in the winter, with minimal chances of the iron rusting. Tapped all the holes today, mineral spirts scrub and then a bath of hot water/air, then finally blown dry with air. Next step is to coat the valley and start assembly. 10 Quote
yellowrosefarm Posted December 28, 2025 Posted December 28, 2025 Grinding the remaining powder coat off to repaint. If there was ever a reason not to use it, this is it. Also went with chains for limiting the tilt 5 Quote
lorenzo Posted December 28, 2025 Posted December 28, 2025 Wish me luck, previous owner said he never heard it run, been sitting for 20 or 30 years. Built in 1968 the 090AV is Stihl’s biggest saw with a 137 CC motor. 8 Quote

Rawleigh99 Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 Bucket cylinders on my WR Long 4 in 1 bucket. I hate those wire retainer cylinders! Both fought me to the bitter end! Once I got the caps to spin the wires stayed stationary and would not unwind. Fortunately the wires were pretty ductile so I was eventually able to bend the tab end up far enough to get small vice grips on them and my rig with the pipe wrench and screwdriver was able to pull them out. On the rusted one I had to take a grinder and lengthen the ramp end of the slot a little to get to the end of the retainer with a punch to push the other end out far enough to bend up and grab onto. Then I had to drive the caps off with a large screwdriver and hammer. Going to take them to the hydraulic shop this week to match up seals, retainers, etc. Ugh! Now I know why the hydraulic shop guy said he wouldn't rebuild 4 in 1 bucket cylinders and would only sell me new cylinders! The thing is the rods and bores are in great shape and I'm a tightwad. 5 Quote

That retainer is the worst design around. Congratulations on getting it done. A good grease pack on assembly of the end gland is about all you can do. 2 Quote

But idk. I’ve seen 10k rpm snowmobile engines run out of fuel/have fuel lines blow off, while under heavy dyno load, and pistons were good Perhaps its caused by a lean fuel mixture or low quality oil ? Hope i dont experience it. I have had various two stroke machines my whole life, even raced motocross as a kid on bikes that were of course two stroke and never had that happen. Quote

Yeah. Had a 031Av that was converted over. Worked good until the engine let go. Still have it sitting in the junk storage shed. Can find pistons for them but not jugs. If I could come up with a jug. I would rebuild it. Just a little gun shy buying a used one off the web without actually touching it and making sure with my own eyes its still usable 1 Quote
DT Fan Posted December 30, 2025 Posted December 30, 2025 Organization! Making surprising progress too. Not sure where it will end but things will be a lot easier to find. Picked up a chunk of 2" radiator hose yesterday. Maybe get the radiator in the 450 today? 2 Quote
hillman Posted December 30, 2025 Posted December 30, 2025 Needed an o2 bottle so while I was there I picked up some dry ice and installed set of dry sleeves 10 Quote
MT Matt Posted December 30, 2025 Posted December 30, 2025 Working on my parts collection! The hydro pump cover on my 560 somehow has a crack in the middle of it and seeps. I’m in Missouri now and an old guy near my niece has some parts tractors. I bought the IH wide front for my 560 off him so I knew he had the cover I needed. I found a good battery box off a utility that should work on the Super M I’ll put together next spring. Will need a little modification but is in really good shape. I also swiped a tach from one of the utility tractors there to fill the hole in the dash of the 650. Doubt it works but better than nothing in the dash. 9 Quote

forwhldrv Posted December 30, 2025 Posted December 30, 2025 Making some weight brackets for the girlfriend’s 730 diesel we got this fall. Plan on freighting this one up around 14-15k to pull with. I measure stuff at home then go into work early or stay late and fab up them then bring pieces home fit them measure some more then repeat. Each one of these should hold 5 100# IH style suitcase weights. I’ll make a brace on the end that bolts to the axle and stops the weights from coming off the ends. They will also double as a step to get on and off the tractor with the 18.4/38’s on it there’s not a lot of room to get on and off. I’m also gathering up parts to get my 450 up and running again. I bought a donor rear end and found an almost complete set of rear end bearings and transmission bearings for it. Looking for some gaskets and seals next. The bearings came with the updated roller bearings for the inner axle bearings they are NOS 5 Quote
B.B. Posted January 1 Posted January 1 We bought this house in late 2021 it's always been on the to do list to see if the fireplace was serviceable. I spent a lot more time than I anticipated ensuring it's in order and thoroughly cleaned and new fire brick installed. Broke one bolt off in the cast baffle plate holder for the chimney. Figured welding a nut on it was the easiest way to get it out. Now I'm gonna have to cut and split some wood to try it out. 8 Quote
IHKeith Posted January 1 Posted January 1 Hi!! I have been busy, haven’t posted in a while. My daughter has friends over tonight and the house is too crowded so I’m in the shop. I just pulled a couple frost plugs from a 318 that is going in my Dad’s 99 Ram, I forgot about the two front plugs when I was changing the others. One of the plugs in the side of the block is missing, it will get the block heater from the old engine, I thought the smoke was cool I bought a Miller 211 Pro a couple weeks ago, it worked great for the first few minutes and then wasn’t performing well. I finished that job with the 252 and didn’t have time to mess with the 211 until tonight. The wire I put in it was very slightly rusty and I was wondering if that was the problem, looking back on the decision to use that wire, I was being cheap, silly to put that in a brand new welder. I put a fresh roll in and it worked well. I think maybe the rust powder was binding up the feed through the liner and the rusty exhaust pipe wasn’t helping the situation. Pics of the dirty roll show it didn’t look too bad lol 1 Quote

Didn't look that bad, but it sure wouldn't feed right. 1 Quote
IHKeith Posted January 1 Posted January 1 My tow truck (just a yard truck) has had a leaking wheel lift pivot cylinder for a while, I got to it today. The o ring in the gland was really worn and didn’t have a back up washer, I’m surprised that it had its moments when it didn’t leak. The rod has some pitting but I think it’ll be fine for the amount of use it sees. The cylinder came off the truck easily and the gland nut loosened quickly with a chisel and turned off with a pipe wrench the rest of the way. I didn’t take any pictures of the cylinder apart but I’ll show the pipe wrench I used, it’s big enough. Got it together and it doesn’t leak but apparently I have lost a valve spool cap to corrosion, and get very low flow for lift circuit, so I’ll have to take care of that 2 Quote
