Even though my family had 2-560s and now a 460 and the 560 being my grandmas favorite, I gotta go with a 450 gas. Just because I don't see many around and I like their looks. I like diesels but the starting on gas and switching to diesel system on the 450 sounds like it could be problematic to me. Somebody who knows correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not so sure a 450 gas wouldnt lug right with a 560 diesel

I was disappointed that there isn't an option to vote for multiple 450 gas and Lp's 😁...... I had a 560 gas in the early 90's for a few years. Every 450 gas I've been around lugs better than the gas 560. A diesel 560 would be better on fuel but not start as easily.

I have a 400 gas and a 560 diesel so.........🤷‍♂️ like em both. Yes the 400 will lug with or better than a 560 imo.

I would like a 450 diesel someday. But I don't know if I would actually use it to farm daily (as a heavy use tractor).

Would like it mainly for hayrides, maybe some other work too.

I had two formerly dedicated IH guys admit their 560 Diesel made them so much money they could afford to buy a new John Deere. One of them kept the 560 so his grandson restored it and motors around on his legacy tractor.

In a related matter neither of them had rear axle problems with their respective 560's.

Gotta go with 560 gas, only because its the first tractor I ever bought.  It also never had rear end problems. I know where the tractor is and still waiting for the owner to put it up for sale and he knows I would like it back

You can’t beat a 560 diesel for fuel efficiency.  Fill it with fuel on Monday and run it all week on one tank!  It is my tractor of choice if I have to run the standby generator.

X2 on the generator. I use my d656 on it. Although I really like the performance of a 450 you can't .compare the economy to a d282

I have sold a few tractors over the years but I definitely miss the 450 the most.Had her for 27 years.

I'm the odd duck that really liked our 560 with a D282. If the batteries and glow plugs were good and it was plugged in come winter it always started. It had an enormous number of hours on it, and it never was opened up. The tach quit at about 9000 hours and it ran for another 20 years. It pulled plow, disced, planted, was a loader tractor for quite a while after we got sick of the M with no power steering.

Downsides are TA didn't work right so every once in a while, when you were pushing snow, you had to pull the torque back to shift because it kept pressure on the trans. Also mom left the brakes half locked and drove it which cracked the brake housing. Was a great tractor and we were very poor, so it got treated like crap. Still runs but doesn't get used anymore. The last tractor my grandpa bought before he died.

I've driven both 450's and 560's, and own a 450 gas. I prefer the 450 over the 560. Yes, the 50 is thirsty (5 gal/hr) but it will out-lug all the 560's I've been around. The 450 is much simpler to work on, and is about the right size for most smaller farms. For fuel economy you can't beat a 560D though. I'd like to say there are a few downsides to owning a 450, but other than needing to follow it around with a gas truck I can't think of any!

Mine from earlier this year, chopping corn stalks.

Hmmmmm

I have trouble coming out of gear after a stop sometimes

Usually make sure I'm out of gear before I roll to a stop.

No trouble going into gear.

Never thought about the TA being involved

That being said.

Knowing what I know now

If I could go back

A 560D would be one of the first tractors I would buy for my working horses.

Kids will sell this one on my sale after I'm gone. I will not sell it before then.

My 450 does the same thing. It won't roll backwards in a forward gear with the clutch in, either. Something to do with the short linkage adjustment between the main and TA clutches. I've messed with mine some, but like you I just make sure I'm out of gear before I stop.

Yes Short link is not short enough. Not releasing TA clutch. Just be sure both clutches have freeplay after you adjust. Sometimes a little less freeplay on main clutch will fix it.

Regarding needing to pull the TA in order to shift at a stop, my F460 is the same way.  I was told to adjust clutch free play so that the tractor would roll when the clutch was pushed in and not by the book recommendation.   I have almost no clutch free play and it still does it, but not as often.   I am guessing that there is enough wear in the clutch that it is not releasing completely and since there is pressure on the transmission if in forward gear and going uphill (or reversed and backing uphill) that the transmission binds.  It does not bind up if I come to a complete stop on the flat and try to shift.  Hours unknown as the tach cable was not replaced at about 4800 hrs 30 years or more ago.  It was relegated to loader duty when Dad quit picking corn, so maybe lots of clutch use in the intervening years.  A new clutch and throw out bearing would probably fix it.

Essentially the 656 was the successor to the 560.

With all of the talk about a 450 having as much or more pulling power than a 560, I wonder if the rear end trouble was due to bigger tillage equipment. My dad pulled     4-16s with his 560s. He never had any trouble with the 560s but I've never seen any bigger than a 3 bottom on a 450

The trouble I ran into after shortening the short link was that the TA would engage before the main clutch engaged, causing the tractor to "jump" a bit when you let out on the clutch. Main clutch freeplay is set pretty short (~3/4"?), and I'm just about out of clutch rod, so I'd say the easiest/best fix is a new clutch. This might be worth creating a separate thread to discuss further... I'll do that in a bit.

I see a lot of 450's on you-tube hauling four bottom plows in black dirt, and going right along with them in 3rd gear. I think the power is there, but there might be an issue of weight, especially with a fast-hitch four bottom. There's a story on the web (maybe from someone here) about his dad testing out a new 4010 and pulling out and passing it with a 450 and four bottom plow... wish I could find that again to show some of my Green buddies.
