Check your fuel level, and move the throttle lever all the way over to "Fast". Try starting again. If your batteries are low now from cranking it you might have to charge them. If that doesn't do it please report back.

On the 730 or 650? Did the smoke clear up some?

I'd definitely check the timing. May be right, may be not, but worth looking at. Someone might have just put the pointer at 0, or it might take just a nudge either way, or it might be fine. Hard to say without checking it out.

Hold on a second. Are you sure that the oil is internally leaking out, and there is not a hose leaking? Between your legs on those tractors there are a few steel lines that can leak. The oil then runs down the side of the transmission and drips off the bottom. Just diagnosed a 574D that had one of those lines leaking, it was dripping pretty good like you said. Tractor got a new line made and away it went. To see if they are leaking you can pull the 4 bolt shield/cover off between your legs and see if you have fluid pooled. If you do, you might have a line leaking. Please check this first before you go and split the tractor, it's a lot easier fix.

If you do a wet compression test like @Idaho Waddie suggests be very careful. Since diesels have such a higher compression ratio, the head and pistons get very close to each other. if you put too much oil in, it can cause the engine to hydrolock and possibly bend a rod. That's why most engine manufacturers don't recommend wet compression tests on diesels. I would instead do a leakdown test on that particular cylinder. That would pinpoint where your compression is leaking and give you a definite answer. Here is how a leakdown test works (if you don't know what that is):

There are many pieces of machinery that use gaskets on the fuel filter and oil filter cans. If you could explain what machine you are working on, that would be greatly appreciated. Good luck!

Does it have a skip in it when cranking? Probably best to pull the valve cover and see if there is anything wrong, and go from there. You could also run a compression check, or check the temp of each exhaust port on the manifold with the engine running and see what your temps are. The odd temp should be the problem cylinder(s). What engine is this, DT466 or 530? Are you referring to the HEUI Fuel Injection system as a common rail, or do you actually mean there is a common rail system? And you are sure it's not mechanical injection? Not doubting you, just want to make sure we have the correct information.

Find the time and money to do a brake job. You probably need new linings.

I would also spray a little penetrating oil around the valves and guides, that way the valve stems can get lubricated and move more freely too. Good luck!

Out of curiosity have you ever considered a 766? About inline with the HP you want, less desirable for many people, and a lot of parts interchange with bigger tractors. Only problem is they are kinda uncommon.

Person I know had to take a combine with the header on through road construction like that. I'm not kidding when he said the top of every cone was squished for all 3 miles of road construction...😄
