TN Hillbilly Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Had to resurrect this thread from page 4! Worked on various things today. Picked up the cedar and pine lumber we had sawed. Worked on straightening the frame on the tedder... thanks to... someone else. Played around with a used Craftsman 110 wire welder... Easier than dragging the Lincoln out. 10 Quote
DT Fan Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Cleaning and organizing the shop for Monday's meeting of the duffers. It's a good motivation to straighten things out. 2 Quote

IHKeith Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Did a turbo on a 16 Cruze today. It had low boost codes and sounded like exhaust was leaking into the intake, also had a jingle noise, I saw the compressor side of the turbo was digging into the intake on diag. Got into replacing it and found the turbo was getting no oil, saw the oil drain line was melted off, but no oil leaks. The oil supply line was blocked and wouldn’t clear even with shop air. The exhaust turbine broke off and was sitting on top of the cat, there’s the jingle. The first pic is the compressor turbine, second picture is of the dry oil inlet, 3rd melted drain tube, 4th the turbine 1 1 Quote
IHKeith Posted March 3 Posted March 3 A good customer runs an insulation company. He called me about his blower’s engine not starting. He’s pretty handy and I gave him some direction, still no fire, so he brought it by. I’m no expert on Honda v twins, this one is a GX690, but I have dabbled in single cylinder clones a fair bit. First thing I did was spin the driven pulley by hand and it didn’t feel like compression. Pulled the plugs and cranked it over with my finger in the hole and felt a little on one and none on the other. Pulled the valve cover on the zero side and no rocker arm movement. Think something is wrong with the cam gear, going to tear into it tomorrow after I pressure wash it. 1 Quote
Gearclash Posted March 3 Posted March 3 8 hours ago, IHKeith said: Pulled the valve cover on the zero side and no rocker arm movement. Think something is wrong with the cam gear, Some of these post modern small gas engines have a cam gear made of a steel shaft with pressed on nylon lobes and nylon gear. Not unusual for the gear to lose its grip on the shaft or break. May not be the case here but the symptoms sound familiar. 3 Quote
pms1961 Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Done working on the Allis 185 for now, still need to go through brakes but they work as does everything else.Next up is replace the water pump and rebuild the alternator on the triple six.Needed to move tractors around to work on in my small shop so thought I would snap a picture.Like the looks of the Farmall over the Allis Chalmers but it is a pretty sweet tractor to operate. 9 Quote

460 Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Made progress on the Mustang 351W based 430cid engine yesterday. Camshaft arrived Friday, should be emissions/CARB compliant😃, now installed, along with verified lift just over .700, cleaned up heads and all the valvetrain, confirmed pushrod length. Also found out how poorly the intake fits for port alignment, off to be milled just like the 302 was😒. Used my IH 263-301 home made camshaft installation tool to install this camshaft. Thanks, Scott 9 1 Quote
B.B. Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Hope you aren't gonna run those valve springs lol I built a standard bore 347 several years ago. Was a lot of fun to drive. I used TW heads and cam. Had it in a 93 GT. Quote

Nice I believe I remember seeing pictures of the car. Still have it? Mine is a 92 had since 2009. They sure have climbed in price. Thanks, Scott 3 Quote
yellowrosefarm Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Got this old Dearborn plow years ago with some other stuff, but had never done anything with it. Straightened it out and plowed my little garden over the weekend. Didn't do a great job, but good enough. 8 Quote
yellowrosefarm Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Putting a timing belt, etc in my little auction car. It has 180k on it so this should be the 3rd one, but I doubt it. 7 Quote

Is there a kit available for that motor. I used to put water pump and tensioner cam with belt kits . Been awhile can’t remember all the detail on the Honda. Quote

TroyDairy Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Nephew and brother got it done when I was at State basketball tourney with kids. Daughters 03 tdi lost cam. 245k miles. Prob shady oil. Tdi are actually picky about oil. Local tdi guru rec Liquidmoly 5w30. Vw special deal. Brother been running it in his tdi for over decade breeding cows. 455000 miles. Timing belt every 100k and axle shaft every 60k. Otherwise stock. Anyway look at the lifters. No wonder wasnt smooth and smoked like a 6.2 gm. Finally was missing. We almost bought injectors. But they aint cheap! So brought to vw guy here. Called few hr later and said what he expected. Bad cam...kind of common on higher mile ones with shoddy care he says. She swears we rebuilt the trans and put big turbo one! Says its so smooth and powerful now. 1 Quote
New Englander Posted March 11 Posted March 11 6 hours ago, TroyDairy said: lost cam Cam out of my plane engine. I knew it was on borrowed time. I replaced all the lifters for spalling. Continental allows continued service with a fingernail catch test. I used a short nail on this one. It hadn't lost all lift but was heading that way. I got maybe 150 hours since lifter change. Now waiting for overhaul shop to finish. Case needed overhaul due fretting - movement between halves. Between that and crankshaft overhaul it's going to be another 8 grand. EDIT: Lifters after 150 hours showing some spalling due tired camshaft. 1 1 Quote
whweldit Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Odds and ends here. Couple small welding projects for daughter and a neighboring horse barn. Daughter wanted a hanging closet organizer. I call it “funeral furniture”. Frame is made from 1/4 rod from flower stands I get at local cemetery I see after when cleaning up after funerals. Horse barn wants 2 of these horseheads. Half way there. Just got it layed out ready to weld. Sent them a picture for approval before welding it. 10 Quote
