acem Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Snakes are out! Of course they are out with highs in the 90s!!! Had a flat on the 4366. Broke loose the wedges. Picked it up and set it on blocks. Unhooked the driveshaft so I can rotate the tire. While rotating the tire, a cotton mouth water moccasin came out from under the tire tread and slithered across my wife's boots. Then back under the tire. After much effort I got it out from under the tire. Grabbed it's tail and flung it away. It landed on the bed of the Loadstar?!?!. Had to jump in the back to herd it out. Then my wife herded it back to the old rice paddy. Durn thing kept wanting to go back under the 4366... Sorry no pics. I was kind busy but watching the snake flying and landing on the bed of the Loadstar is burned into my memory!!! 7 1 1 Quote

Sledgehammer Posted March 22 Posted March 22 I found a snake in the woods today looking for deer antlers. It had no head, just a body lying there. (It really wasn't me) I found that odd but the buzzards gotta eat too I suppose. 🤷🏻♂️ Quote

twostepn2001 Posted March 22 Posted March 22 Last weekend they had the annual Sweetwater, Texas Rattlesnake Roundup. Been going on since 1958. Never been to it and don't plan on it either. l've had several "close encounters of the 3rd kind" of rattlers by accident so l don't need or want to go to a place where there are thousands of them one place. In your part of the county being immune to their poison and working outdoors would be too your advantage. Always read your posts! Glad I don't have to deal with pests like you have! Quote
oleman Posted March 22 Posted March 22 Snakes aren't much of an issue, in Texas, a D#$ coyote, comes onto your back porch and makes a meal out on the kids yellow tom cat! Growing up in the low lands of South Carolina all the reptiles in the world seem to congregate there. Only person I ever knew that was bitten by a rattler was my Ant Costie, after she was to bad off to look after herself, my Cousin, her care giver, went shopping and she was bitten from a rattler from under her front porch, Their family home was adjacent to a nice swamp. She killed it with her hoe and had a swollen lower leg when Reuben returned, was a nasty wound that took months to heal and was a nasty scar, possibly because of her age as much the venom or waiting for her help to return. Snakes were anywhere there were rats and that meant to stay away feeding area after sunset, BUT full grown hogs had no threat from a snake, they will make a meal of and unlucky poisonous snake. 1 Quote
ray54 Posted March 23 Posted March 23 Warm weather here so snakes of all kinds out. On the radio a report of one person dead from rattle snake bit. I want to say northern part of state. Spent 3 weeks in hospital before dying. I am not going to handle any snake, poisonous or not. I have had 2 occasions of being way to close to rattle snakes. Luckly both were sleeping on cool wet ground on very hot days. Nether survived the day. One a little 6 inch baby, the other plenty big enough at about 3 foot. Here rattle snakes change color with the season to blend into the back ground. With grass very green the snakes will be too. More yellow as the grass dries, black. Had one sleeping on the front door matt a few years ago. About 6 feet from were I am sitting now looking out the window. A number of the barn cats sitting looking at the front door. As the shot gun was out found a square point shovel. Jerked the door open with one hand stab the shovel with the other. With it coiled did enough damage it did not move much until I got several 2 handed strikes. Then I could steady my nerves. But needed it moved so cats did not get bit as they move around like a chicken with its head cut off. So still able cause injury when dead. Quote
