40 years ago you never seen a bridge getting replaced. Now they seem to paint steel bridges every few years and also replace them completely before it seems like the last paint had had time to dry

40 years ago they didn't use calcium chloride

For bridges to stand up to calcium chloride they are going to have to make them out of Stainless 

If you notice most sander and dump bodies used for sander duty are made from stainless now because of the calcium chloride use,

Around here they don't even use sand any more because they don't want sweep it up in the spring

Same way here. Some of the small townships use sand but the state roads and more populated areas are all salts. I have never seen a stainless  bridge, but I am surprised that they don’t do that yet. I’ve had a stainless vblade for years. Rare to see a painted steel one anymore

I have the left screw driver and there might be one of the right ones around somewhere. I didn't realize they could also be fuses or switches. Learn something here all the time.

The new lift bridges over the  Piscataqua river NH-ME are heavily galvanized. The lift bridges they replaced dated from the'30s and '20s +/-. Another fixed high bridge that carried I95 is painted but seems to undergo a lot of maintenance including a complete blast and paint a few years back. It dates from the '70s.

I notice that the Bascule  bridges in FL are all galvanized too. They're just over salt water, not over and under from road salt like our local ones.

Bridges are getting a lot more attention now since there's been a few disastrous collapses and not just from getting hit by a ship.
