Ive dealt with lots of older and newer diesels that are not great cold srarters. My 08 duramax will start at -40 not plugged in if it had to. 2011 skid steer with kubota motor will start at -25c not plugged in. 1486 will start at -15c. But our Hydro 100 and 766 need to be plugged in if it's right around freezing. Of course condition and hours make a big difference. We use a JD 6140M? at work for mowing and it is sure grumpy starting when it's right around freezing. Quote

JD changed something from the 5020 to the 6030 because the NA 6030 and 5020 have different speeds even though both are 2,200 rpms. I recently read in a magazine the ring and pinion on the 6030s were different than the 5020. So an N/A 6030 is not exactly the same as a 5020 Quote

They took it but they hammered very hard for several seconds. If you don’t use high octane the gas was always flat. A whiff of ether got them running to burn out old gas. And to be fair we were starting stalled gas engines and all types of machines that we were working on. So just a quick test give it a shot of ether and see if it started or straightened out to trouble shoot. Quote

acem Posted January 3 Posted January 3 My 856, 66, 86 and 86 series tractors start very easily in cold weather. Biggest problems I had on these tractors is battery cables and fuel issues. Many JD 40x0 here were the 24V system and it seems they gave alot of trouble. Some solenoid or something. I remember they would switch them back to 12V. Quote
lotsaIHCs Posted January 3 Posted January 3 It must have been at the end of the 4020 run, but my dad has told me that his uncle was looking for a new big tractor. I don't remember what he was running before, but the JD dealer brought out a used 4020 for him to try. He didn't like it. So he sent it back and they brought a new 4020 for him to try. He still didn't like it and ended up buying a new white Case 1070. So it must have been the end of 72/ beginning of 73 since the 4020 ended in 72 and the white 1070 started in 73. That 1070 was his pride and joy. I remember him giving everyone rides in it on the 4th of july, must have been 1973. I was just a little kid but wow! What a tractor! Quote

In theory they should start better as the head and piston combo gave them a bit more compression ratio. Something like .4 or .5 more than turbo engines. Quote
Farming Enthusiast Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Since the 6030 is fresh in my mind after recently reading an article about them I have a question for the green strays on here about 6030s pulling. They put 619s in them and run them in farm stock because the 531 is an embarrassment on the track. And when caught they swear up and down that they came from the factory that way and it should be allowed and will name call and put down anybody who thinks otherwise. The question is, do you think the 619 should be allowed in farmstock pulling and if so, does that mean that MM should be able to run the 800 CI engines they produced because it's a very similar situation. marty966 Posted January 3 Posted January 3 So i suppose the IH vs Deere and (vice versa) debate has been ongoing since both companies have been in existence. And bringing this debate here to the Red Power Forum, there are some comments surfacing time and again, such as the green guys are always derailing pure IH threads, and time and again we see disparaging comments towards Deere from the red crowd in these all red threads. IMO this opens the IH vs Deere debates. I will only speculate on the reasons for this. For myself I enjoy fact based debate on various subjects of course farm machinery is a favorite. Personal insults and name calling for the sake of trying to prove a point I have no use for. Also the type of discussion we have heard from back in grade school such as wild claims to which color of tractor can do whatever without any factual info of such. This is my personal opinion, take it at face value. 1 Quote

The 619 is the factory replacement for the 531 from Deere. It may not be fair, but most rules say that is all it takes to be legal. If you want to go a little further, the 619 comes from the factory with a "P Series" pump on the engine....again, not fair, but the way it is. If the 800 cube Moline engine is a factory replacement, then it would be legal (I have no idea if it is or not) Around here, you need 800-1000 horses to be competitive in the farm stock class, it's a little harder to do with a 1066, but not impossible. 1 Quote

Yes it was a JD approved dealer replacement but no 6030 left the factory with a 619 and that's why they are not allowed in most farmstock classes if anybody catches them with one. MM was a similar situation though I'm not sure the 800 was available in any tractors but power units. I see JD guys complaining about it in archived pulling forums and was wondering how they'd feel if a guy with a G1000 entered a farmstock pull with an 800 in it Quote
Dirt_Floor_Poor Posted January 3 Posted January 3 I don’t think I’d want to be pulling with either one of those engines really. There can’t be a lot of extra engine blocks for either one of those is there? I’m not paying the bills though. Quote

I personally talked to a guy that got away with having a 619 in one and he DOMINATED them few years. Although I cringed to see him beat the IH tractors it was something to see. He ended up selling it after it wasn't allowed anymore. From what I could tell he's a good guy just got caught up in the game. 1 Quote

I have a 50 series 619 and my personal opinion is that it is an ok engine at best. Mine has held together pretty well since the last time I put a head gasket on it though. I guess maybe if it’s going up against IH 400 series it would have an advantage. I’m no tractor puller. My experience with 619’s is that you can’t abuse them, but I’ve never seen one in a 2wd tractor either. I suppose down the track a few times is a totally different deal. Quote

He was always working on it I guess. I wished he woulda found a class for it because it was awesome but he made a clean break 1 Quote

searcyfarms Posted January 4 Posted January 4 i will say this, i have both, i use my red stuff more than green, for many reasons, the main reason I have green is because they were family heirlooms from my childhood ( the old two lungers ) and my newest a CUT is because Red didnt offer a 72" belly mower for my wife. red will never replace green for me anymore than a chevy will replace my ford truck - ok now let the CHEBY/FORD battle begin!!!! 4 Quote
