Used to get all mine from Allied but they went out of business a few years ago. Have two of theirs in my 1466's abd been working fine. Got one right now in the shop for someone else that ran about an hour and started dumping oil in the DD side someplace inside past the jumper tubes and lube drops to zero in DD. Supposed to be taken care of under warranty by parts supplier but I dont really need the experience or expense of doing stuff twice. Anyone else take over for Allied?

I still have Allied TA's in 2 of my tractors and they're around 20 years old.  Aer Vac before that. Good luck. I had an  Ag Parts lose the high side with 200 or so hours, but out of the 5 year warranty. Tuff crap they said.

This is what I found.

Why do people not rebuild the unit themselves?

Not many TAs down here.

We used to do a pretty good business doing just that. Then IH started their rebuild program with SRC. To ensure its success they made the sprag gear unavailable.

The sprag was wider in that TA than the original , so the gear and sprag were different

the first gears were machined to fit the sprag

had a few of them apart back when we used to rebuild in the shop

then like Snoshoe mentioned parts were not available -- so we put in the reman units only

Got some nice tool rewards from putting in remans from the incentive program

When IH started the rebuild program I had inside info from our district rep and we ordered 10 sprags and gear for future rebuilds before we had to go with factory units. I rebuilt many, many of them back in the day

We use Ag Parts for multiple reasons, 1 day away UPS, they pick up cores and delivery new / reman units, so no freight charges. They have if needed, stood behind any problems with no questions asked.

All things equal I think the attention to detail, pressure settings, final adjustments of the installation and operator are what makes or breaks "the best TA"

If I lived in a different village I would use Hy-Cap as / if needed.

mrfred54, snoshoe and others I am sure have way more experience in rebuilding than what I ever will. I have rebuilt them, but end up having way more time into rebuild than what I can purchase a unit for. Today I am sure a "rebuild" requires machining that most shops don't have the capability to do, so exchange unit it is. Maybe that is what drove IH to offer the reman units.

That is the biggest complaint I hear.

The new parts fail so the job has to be done over again, which takes time and you are not making money.

Some shops are using nothing but OEM parts to hopefully avoid this.

These parts suppliers need to be paying the shops for a re-do because their parts failed.

But, that will never happen?

Exactly pressure settings and attention to detail are big things.

$400 labor doesn't cover much these days.

$400?  Where I work that isn't even 2 hours.  How long does a TA swap take?  I have no idea but thinking an experienced guy still gotta be a solid days work?

HY Capacity warranty looks a little better, but kind of vague on the hours they'd pay for labor.

Warranty Policy

partsheader1140.jpg

All of Hy-Capacity’s parts, except those mentioned below, are covered by a One (1) Year Warranty. The warranty period is determined by the date of original installation. To qualify for warranty credit, the part must be in original condition and should NOT have ever been disassembled. Credit is given for failures due to defects in materials or workmanship and does not cover failures due to unauthorized modifications, such as over ballasting, over fueling, or tractor pulling contests. Warranty Coverage is extended to the installing purchaser for the part purchased.

Torque Amplifiers and Components*
Part Length Covers
Heavy Duty Hydraulic TA 3 Years Assembly & Labor
Super Hydraulic TA 4 Years Assembly & Labor
Hydraulic TA Elimination 1 Year Assembly Only
Standard Mechanical TA 6 Months Assembly Only
Heavy Duty Mechanical TA 1 Year Assembly Only
835000 Carrier/Sprag Kit 6 Months Kit Only

* All TA's must be installed in accordance with Hy-Capacity specifications for warranty. Warranty card must be on file at Hy-Capacity for warranty to be honored. Warranty period is from the date of original installation for the published period at the time of installation.

* When replacing an A/C Compressor, the system must be flushed and the receiver driver & expansion valve must be replaced to validate warranty.

* Pressure plate warranty does not cover burnt release levers and clutch release bearings. Flywheels must be ground to specifications for clutch warranty.

This warranty is in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied. Warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose are excluded, as are all other representations to the user - purchaser and all other obligations or liabilities including liability for incidental and consequential damages on the part of the company or seller.

Start a Warranty Claim:

  1. Review our return requirements & complete the RMA/Return Request form. All product must have a valid RMA number at time of return.
  2. Prepare your product for shipment. Product must be secure and properly packaged. Hy-Capacity is not responsible for damaged shipments.

  3. Once the product arrives at our facility, it will be examined and retested before warranty credit is issued.

Well usually not just a TA -- the clutch is usually in the mix -- and MCV rebuild

If you're working around a cab it just takes longer too. I used to pull the cabs off but now I try to just hoist them up then roll the center out from under it. Pretty easy to get 20 hours or more into one job.

When I was working at the last dealership I was employed at, back in 1993 or so, I put a clutch and TA in my dad's 806. Hy Capacity HD unit. Within about a year the tractor would jump when the clutch pedal was down and shifting the speed transmission between gears, like the sprag was catching or something. They had me doing all these adjustments to dump valve and clutch and never got any better. Seemed like  they were just dragging their feet until the warranty expired, which eventually happened.

They'll do whatever they can to avoid a warranty in my opinion.

In 1996 I went into a shop with an older mechanic who was on the verge of retiring, in his 80's. He always used AerVac TA's and never had problems. The HyCapacity rep stopped at times and asked why I didn't want to use their drivetrain parts. I said after my dad's 806 issue I won't ever buy a TA from you. I did have an AerVac TA start slipping on the high side and it was covered no questions. The best rebuilders AerVac and Allied are sadly no longer in business.

I'm not sure who rebuilds A&I's but they're are quite a bit more expensive.  They bought BMD at Klemme Iowa which always had good stuff too, but not sure they are still going.

It seems like these rebuilders have the sprags figured out to hold up. The shaft and sealing rings and keeping pressures where they should be is the problem now.

Not much help to 1967806 I guess grumbling about the past, but I think I'd go to HyCapacity just from the warranty coverage I posted.

I still have an Allied Catalog on the rack.

I talked to Hy Cap a couple days ago and sounds like the warranty is going to be covered. Might even get to wait on it so they can tear it apart and look at it to see what went wrong. I'd just like to know. I've never taken one apart.

Comparatively simple unit to take apart -- matter of fact if the clamp is not used on the shaft , the front will fall off the shaft

the rear section with the clutches is bolted together

Likely just a shaft seal ring -- some of the replacement rings are soft plastic and push sideways in the groove
if there is a burr on the side of the groove  or too much clearance , the seal ring will wear thin

Seen a few that the bolts were not tight and the gasket would blow in the clutch drum

If I had the time when I replaced a unit , would take the thing apart to see what failed
-- seal rings were a common failure

Does Case IH still offer their style of T A.s I tried them when they first came out with the 15 year warranty, all 3 tractors had to be replaced 3 times, the last ones seem to be holding up. been a few years,

They wont warranty it if I take it apart they say in the printed information. Not sure if they could tell or not. Hopefully they will take it apart when I take it back.

Yeah , probably in this case

Was just mentioning that I did take several apart -- but not warranty units

Dad tells the story once in while of when he had his 806 in the local dealer back in the early 70's to get the TA fixed. The guys in the shop got it all back together and when they started it and let the clutch out it killed the engine. Guess they put the sprague in backwards.

When we put a T/A in the 1456, I ordered a HyCap unit.  Brother was so pissed at that first unit, heard a constant rattle that made a guy think you had gears clashing in the speed tranny.  We though we had bent forks, bad speed cover, couldn't pin it down.  Finally, when he took it for a test drive, it freewheeled on him going downhill.  He wanted so bad to tear the unit apart, but HyCap did send us another one, warrantied the bad one, and paid a flat labor rate to replace it.  It wasn't much when you compare labor rates these days, but it helped offset the cost of the job.

That unit did have a lot of numbers stamped into the housing, should have been a red flag that this unit might be a dud.

We got one of their last stock units they ever offered, now they no longer offer a stock 3 disk/two disk unit, its 4 disk/two disk now.  That one is in the 856.

I made up my mind from now on I will air test every TA I install before I ever start putting any gears back in the housing. However this particular one may have tested fine with air pressure. The TA/DD pressures were nearly identical with good lube pressure when I had my gauges on it. I took my gauges off, put the cab on and went for a test drive and it shifted so nice I was happy with it. Guy hauled it home, put his bale unroller on it and took off down the road to get some hay and lube light started flashing before he got to his bale pile.
