Dirt_Floor_Poor Posted January 23 Posted January 23 We’ve been trying to move some grain. We hope to get some more done tomorrow before it gets bad. I’m not shutting the trucks off tonight. I’m not confident we could get them going tomorrow if they aren’t already running. 2 Quote

Dont plan on getting out unless I need to, got wood and a generator water and enough food for a month of not longer - i think we will all be fine...........this too shall pass 2 Quote

I could probably find some if I looked, but it’s kind of an oddity here. Definitely not at many pumps. The trucks would start, but keeping them running would be the problem. There is always lots of drama with the “winter blend” #2 when it gets down around 0 F. I probably wouldn’t worry about hauling any, but the soybean processor here had a fire and was only open half the week to begin with. And with bad weather possible, I probably won’t haul any more for several days. 1 Quote

Normally I don't haul in cold weather like that but we were hauling Coors barley and its not like a regular elevator were they are take barley all year long. Once they are full it might be a few months or more before you can haul again. So we hauled and got all of ours in because nobody else hauled haha. 2 Quote
acem Posted January 23 Posted January 23 My forecast says all forms of frozen precipitation are possible. I'm on the line so it could be all snow (ideal), some sleet (not too bad) or some Ice (bad). The snowfalls could be heavy with totals over a foot. I don't mind a foot of snow but don't want any ice. Power outages are a pain... It's supposed to be cold for us. Lows around 0F. Lots of wind. Minnesota weather in Arkansas! But it will warm up in a few days. It always does... Quote

acem Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Ok I just read the updated forecast from the NWS (Tulsa for here). 8 to 20 inches of snow. Up to 4 inches of sleet which would reduce snow totals. Some ice possible. Multiple bands of winter precipitation from Friday through Sunday. Cold and windy to make it stick. The ground is not frozen so it will help melt the snow. The ground will be very soft after this mess melts... I need to buy more gas for the generator... Quote

There is one station close here that has a kerosene pump. It works just as good to thin #2 diesel out. I have put 10% in when it’s -10 or so. That doesn’t happen here every year. Quote

Many planes route the flight control hydraulic lines through the tanks. Hydraulic actuators have a calibrated small leak through so everything stays warm, relatively. Ram rise helps keep fuel warm too but we do have to watch fuel temps and have minimum temp before we have to change altitude. I've been close to minimum fuel temp of +3c over freeze point but never hit it. Hangar I once worked out of had the underground storage tanks removed and above ground installed. They didn't replace the heating oil tank, just metered Jet fuel off so no aviation tax or airport flowage fee paid. Burner service guys showed up and said someone must have just changed the fuel filters on the heaters as they're perfectly clean. Nope, Jet fuel is just that clean. I was always amazed at how dirty my home heating oil filters were every year and the sludge in the bottom of the tank when we converted to heat pump/LPG. Cut the tank in half to dispose of it and there was 6" of sludge in the bottom with a channel to the outlet. 2 Quote
Lazy WP Posted January 23 Posted January 23 All this talk about #1 fuel, I have only run it in my truck when I get north of Nebraska. I think there’s some available in Salina, but I haven’t used it. As long as my water separator is drained, I have never had any issues with just using conditioner. Up until last winter, my truck always sat outside and I never plugged it in. Started when it was 20 below and wind blowing in the radiator. Do I recommend it? Not if you can help it, but sometimes you have to do what you need to do. It’s 11 this morning and a stiff north wind. Truck is inside and will probably be a bit more conditioner added before it faces the elements. The advantage of running local is I don’t have to get out of my truck. Electric tarp rolls at the touch of a button. They open my traps. Getting spoiled!! 2 Quote

I would not recommend this for high pressure common rail diesel fuel injection systems but in a pinch I will use 2% by volume gasoline to prevent waxing. I usually use my 2 stroke premix for that so there is a little added lubricity to protect against the gasoline. If there is any possibility that diesel has begun waxing up, it needs to be treated BEFORE starting the engine to avoid plugging the fuel filter. If there is wax in the fuel, it is too late to add conditioner; it will take special treatment like Power Service 911 (red bottle) or gasoline to dissolve the wax. 4 Quote
acem Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Years ago it was below zero. It was time to feed cattle so I plugged in the 886. It started up ran about a minute and fluttered down and died. Pulled the filters and they was frozen water in them. Ice don't filter well... Quote

Our diesel fuel here is blended 50 / 50 and I've seen it up to 70% #1 and 30% #2. We're just getting the cold up here. Today's high is supposed to be -3 F. Right now it's -14 F with very little wind thankfully. - 26 wind chill. Our oldest son and his wife live in Charlotte NC, so could be interesting for that area. But he grew up driving on ice and snow, just need to watch out for the others. My oldest brother lived in Dallas in the 90's. He said if they got an ice storm it's just best to stay off the roads. It was just dangerous watching them try to drive. At least most vehicles are All Wheel Drive now. Be safe down south! Quote
