Sask466 Posted December 5, 2024 Author Posted December 5, 2024 It might be a “family” owned government contract, if you know what I mean! Montreal has a long/well known history of that. 1 Quote

As you can imagine the little sidewalk plow isn't as powerful as a wheel loader, so that's why they make the first pass to push the bulk of the snow out of the way first, and the sidewalk plow has a place to push the sidewalk snow. You make multiple passes with the grader to peel up as much of the packed-down snow as possible. Remember people can't drive on snow-packed roads anymore. The more you peel off the less salt you need to melt the streets clear. I used to move my three point blade all the way to one side and carefully do the sidewalks at church. Or do ten foot at a time by backing up to the sidewalk with my other blade. Either way was much better the walk behind snowblower. Quote

That assumes the residents are normal, reasonable, and rational. Those qualities are exceedingly rare in residents of cities and dense neighborhoods. oleman Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 You gotta be tough up North. I was in Newfoundland, on 4 th of July week once. I checked into a Holiday In, and the friendly desk clerk told me the snow had finally melted the last week of June. They get serious snow in St Johns! 1 Quote

Add into it your new city councils that can't run or decide on anything common sense, yearly tax increases approaching double digits and yearly plans and fails to remove snow, we've only been doing it for 100 yrs, if they really wanted to know how to remove snow and what worked they would talk to retired equipment operators from the 70's to 90's when we used to get more snow and the majority of residents had 2wd 1 Quote

Residental was pushed to the boulevard while the business district was pushed to the middle of the street. When he got caught up he'd remove the windrow in the middle, sometimes over 8 feet high, using a MM RTI with a Lull industrial loader and a 68 Dodge 600 gravel truck. If he was lucky, the city would hire someone to drive truck and another truck and driver so he could keep loading. Otherwise he was on his own. What a difference it made when they got a 920 Cat loader. He built a snowplow out of an old grader wing that fastened to the bucket. No quick tach like today. Quote

IHKeith Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 For what it's worth, in my experience, Quebec residents are more in tune with the realities of good public works than most. Could go far enough to say the wokest Montreal born and raised hipster knows their unique cultural community is dependent on fossil fuels, and equipment especially for winter maintenance. If the snow removal was done in the daytime or by an out of province company, fuel supplied from out of province, English names on trucks, etc, they would not be as understanding. Quote

int 504 Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 I think Quebec requires studded tires on vehicles in winter. Quote
ChrisNY Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Common practice here. Every night the city runs blowers and fill into dump trucks which they….dump in the river. Sicard which was a big blower manufacturer was built right here in Watertown. Quote

New Englander Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 To keep the airport open they never let it build to more than an inch or two. Push it towards the melter and let the wheel loaders feed them, even on the roof of the parking garage. Ground operations are a nightmare. Slither to the deice pad, get sprayed, taxi to the runway watching your holdover time, get delayed enough that your holdover expires, taxi back to the deice pad, repeat as necessary. Not so bad now with two step deice - type 1 followed up with type 4, that pretty green. It's got a pretty good hold over. Type 4 slides off a little over 100 knots. When it first came out crews, both flight and ground really weren't well trained and didn't know not to put it on the nose where it would slide up on the windshield right around V1. Never happened to me but guys reported the TO continued as a zero/zero. I've had the snow build up and briefly cover the window and hoped the center engine didn't mind it as that's where it was heading. I can't imagine what it costs to keep all those plows, loaders, and melts running. Like the city streets there's really no place to push snow to, it has to be removed. Quote
mader656 Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 Snow removal from big snows in town is not as easy as it looks. From redlodge montana first you plow to the side of the road during the storm... then after the storm have to get all the cars gone. Then push out the intersections to make room to work. We do both sides at one time... close the street push to the center. Get the blower on to load trucks. We use the big stuff from beartooth hwy. It takes seconds to load a dump truck. Haul the snow out to the dump site dump it. Repeat all day long... to pull four feet of snow off 8 blocks takes 40 guys in trucks and equipment 12 hours. That process looks pretty efficient. You cant go hog wild in town one stone or ice chunck out of the shute and your replacing windows or worse. Quote
Sask466 Posted December 8, 2024 Author Posted December 8, 2024 We have a snow dump site in Regina that looks like a small glacier by end of season on big snow years. They push the pile probably 60’ high with D8’s. It’s at least a 160acre area. You will see some there until late July on big years. *Edit - it’s also amazing what you see in the pile as the snow melts. Curbs, shopping carts, etc. I have been told Winnipegs snow dump sometimes has snow/ice that remains all year. Quote

We pull both sides of the street and put it in the windrow and the next pass is Kleen up .... The two blowers here are " Sicard Snow Masters " the older one is all Sicard the newer one is a Larue cab and chassis and a sicard blower head . Both have 12V71's with bigger # injectors . Another good friend of Chris NY use to work at " Sicard " back in the day they tuned and tested these mammoth blowers in the summer time by driveing them in the nearby river and made them blow " Water " Yep on that side of the black line .... the other tattle tale sign of hourly contractors is the trucks - trailers aren't full of snow .... we fill em !
