pt756 Posted August 8 Posted August 8 cant find my old post awhile ago about BIL f 150 repair, cam fazers were going, anyway 2 1/2 months later truck is repaired from Ford dealer only 7634, 00 dollars, of course a lot of other things, he told me the front lockouts are vacuum operated needed replacing, wore the gears, many other things, The one thing that he did comment on was the hood sensor thing came on, so he calls dealer back, price was 247 dollars to fix, he does deliver for Advance his cost under 40 dollars, seems like a pretty good markup there, I did ask if he had Endurance or Car Shield one of the many companies advertising to keep your car going, He said bank loan, He is mid 70.s so I guess he will run it out, Quote
Gearclash Posted August 8 Posted August 8 Got a Kubota RTV (side by side) due to come in the shop for brakes. Needs rotors and pads all 4 corners. Over $1100 just for parts. 2 Quote
Dirt_Floor_Poor Posted August 8 Posted August 8 Over engineered government mandated junk. Save a thimble full of gas and then get stuck with a $10,000 repair when it fails in short order. 4 Quote

TN Hillbilly Posted August 9 Posted August 9 I guess I have a different perspective on this. Without knowing any details other than what you've shared, I am assuming this truck is in very good shape otherwise, maybe he's had it a long time? If so, and if after this repair it should be in good shape for years to come, then I can understand the $7600 repair. Yes, that probably is the value of the truck, maybe a little more, but where can you find a mechanically sound truck for $7600 anymore? Around here, $7600 would buy you a big question mark - maybe good, maybe terrible, probably somewhere in between. So my reasoning is, if he had decided, "This repair will be too expensive, I'll park this truck and buy another," I don't know if he could be in the spot he is now - a good, dependable, known truck - for $7600. Now, on the other hand, if he spent $7600 on a rusted out trap that he bought 6 months ago that still has multiple remaining issues, then I would question the wisdom of that... 1 Quote

stronger800 Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Young guy who helps me just had another local shade tree mechanic put phasers/chains/guides etc, in his ‘13, f150, at 170k. Parts were $600 at O’reilly (Sp?) and the guy charged him $400 or $500 to do it, in two days. Quote
vtfireman85 Posted August 9 Posted August 9 I have to say, I love this Ford, but it has been to the dealership so many times for fussy stuff. Steering components wearing out, suspension components wearing out, evap system throwing code after code. Etc Etc. 1 Quote
pt756 Posted August 9 Author Posted August 9 Its not much different with tractor repairs either most repairs will exceed the value of most older tractors, the truck is well taken care of, realized when he bought it at his age will probably the last truck, still at mid 70.s he gets out and will deliver for Advance 3 days a week and then will help us on the farm when ever, he also has a older ford f250 caba and half long box the years ago he redid the body , has the 7.3 motor, its his collector tractor thing, I guess I would of not stuck the thousands that he did into it but its no different the money some of us spend on redoing a tractor, I thibk the more complicated these engines become we will have to get use to this, Years ago we bought a chev pickup, paid decent money for it used, was told the 5.3 motor is bullet proof, only to fing out a few months later the heads were from mexico, was a service bulletin out on it, anyway was told just out of warranty, 2500 dollars back then, truck was around a long time after repair, Quote

pt756 Posted August 9 Author Posted August 9 May years ago all we had for a grain drill was a Case 9 foot drill, trip lift, single disc, neighbor stopped in commented about it, cant afford something else, Quote
jeeper61 Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Is the cam phaser part of the emissions system? IMO it should be the manufacturer has to cover it till 100k. If it was most OEMs would use better parts to avoid the warranty costs. Quote

pt756 Posted August 9 Author Posted August 9 Once I had a 1985 extended ford 250 with a 460 and 4 speed , that was fun, probably in that lower fuel efficiency standard Quote
stronger800 Posted August 9 Posted August 9 I had a 78 and a 88. 6-7 mpg, on 33’s or 35’s. 460’s Thought they were animals. In reality, my ‘24 3.5 ecoboost is more of a truck in every way. More Hp. More torque. Bigger and better brakes. Pretty sure it’s rated to tow more too. And they were 250’s. 3.5 is 16-19mpg too, but not on 35’s either. Upsized from stock though Quote

If I’m not mistaken, cam phasers are common on Ford 5.4L engines(maybe others) the cam is somewhat adjustable as the engine runs. Cold start-up has one setting, as the engine warms the cam adjusts, same under heavy acceleration vs. tooling around town. What kills the cam phaser is extended oil change intervals. 3000-3500 mile maximum, pay no attention to that silly ‘oil monitor’ in today’s vehicles. Not one of Ford’s better ideas. Quote

By observation, I'd say most cam phasers give troubles sometime after 100,000 miles no matter the brand. Apparently oil type and change is very important. Quote

No offense was taken, it was merely something I got worked up about in the past. There is a Ford commercial out now that is truly embarrassing. 4 people in a Bronco...."......looks like America is enjoying Ford quality.....!" . But they never show the V6 with the chain drive water pump and a bunch of bent valves. Bet that guy is basking in enjoyment.... Ford used to have such cool commercials in the eighties of trucks doing bad-ass stuff. If they tried climbing a mountain of cinder blocks today, all the plastic fender flares, trim pieces and tailgate would fall off. 2 Quote
New Englander Posted August 11 Posted August 11 I had several Ford PUs back in the day - 360s 390s, etc. They were simple machines that worked well. I ended up with GM as my wife had Suburbans and the like so having commonality was an advantage. Ford's breaking spark plugs, transmission problems etc. all point to poor engineering choices. That doesn't mean GM is without sins either - junk torque converters and the like. I've been perhaps lucky and haven't encountered any of those. Pick your poison. Quote
