I'm going to look at a 1066 on Saturday. They had the engine replaced with a 414 out of a combine. Similar hours were on the combine - 4900 on the tractor. He said a local mechanic did the work. Injectors were "done" and PTO replaced by a certified IH mechanic.

He said shift linkages aren't worn, no major oil leaks, hydraulics strong. The mechanic checked out the TA and Clutch when engine was replaced and everything looked good. TA still works. I asked about the dirty engine and he said a fuel line was leaking but that was fixed. Obviously at least one of the windows in the cab is broke with the plexiglass. Is is possible to just take the cab off? How hard?

Tractor has 50% rears and comes with duals.

He is asking $8500.

What else should I ask/look at when I go? Any issues with putting a 414 in from a combine that I should look at to make sure it was done correctly? Antifreeze in the oil from head gasket/cavitation is one thing I need to look at.

Thanks.

Water filter?

D or DT-414 engine? 815 used the D while the 915 had a DT.

Biggest concern with previous combine engine duty are air filter issues.

I can see the LH rear is loaded with fluid. Rust on the rim but a close inspection is required.

IH factory dual hub and appears to be long axles.

Cab doesn't look too bad from this picture. Keep it and find a replacement window unless it's an absolute no-go.

More pics would be helpful for the peanut gallery commentariat.

Thanks for the info. I am not sure on the turbo or not. These are the only other pictures. Right tire has fluid too. Covering over the window and back window is bent.

How do you tell on a water filter? Is that a pro?

The tractor is 5 miles down the road so I'm not risking much taking a look.

The water filter is in the picture just behind the alternator, that is a plus if its changed regularly. It prevents the cavitation.

Buy it. You can't really go wrong at that price if it runs and moves.
Lot's of people out there asking wayyy more than that for one.

As far as anything being wrong with it....it's a 50+/- year old tractor, and everything is repairable. Still plenty of parts out there for those.

A straight, clean, running 1066 with working TA & approx 5000 hours for $8500?   Press the "buy now" button before somebody else does!   (the Oily grime is a minor leak at most, as stated).  At that price, I might even consider it even if a motor rebuild was needed.   If you do not see any major issues, I think you found a great deal.

Removing or repairing that cab is simple.  We used to figure 2 hours at most to take the cab off the 1066.    You will need a set of fenders it you remove it.  Or simply take all the glass out & doors off and have a sunshade.

As stated, parts for that 1066 are plentiful.   AS far as the conversion - only real issue might be if it still had the combine pump settings...but again not that big a deal to change, or just use as is.

Three point looks solid and perhaps even adjustable since the levers are still intact and there's grease stains.

Engine ID stamp is on the block on a flat casting feature behind the fuel lines. That will identify what base engine was used for the repower.

I've definitely seen a lot worse examples of a 74-75 1066 out in the wild. Cab doors are usually the first casualty and they look straight although poly side windows are a new wrinkle. Guessing a round bale got too close to the rear window.

Thanks for the advice guys. We've got a 1066, owned since new so I'm familiar with them. It has 7500 hours, but it would be handy to have a second in the spring so we don't have to switch it between planting and tillage. I'll give you an update this weekend.

More than likely I'll buy it.

Looks like it has a turbo, looks like the oil feed line is outside of the manifold instead of running up between two exhaust ports, and it looks like the drain line is hooked up behind the oil cooler.

Saw that. Suggests a hair dryer augmentation to an NA engine.

crack the oil drain plug and see if any coolant comes out. check them steering splines .  that cab looks like it was added later on also. it don't match the tractor paint. the price is right up there.

I would love that LED light bar on a few of my tractors.   Bet she really lights up the world.

Lights up the hood and exhaust stack
I moved mine to the front of the hood because of the glare at night

still have 2 extra lights at the top of the cab front and rear -- but they shine more to the side , than the front

I'd mount it pointing BACK....

Not enough of these with factory cabs anymore.  Open station refurbs are overrated imo.  Keep the cab.  Id've had it bought already.

I never liked those red deluxe cabs.Had several either sold tractor or removed cab and put fenders on them. But its not just fenders you need platform pieces, steps, grab handles.Battery trays are different too.But not a bad looking tractor. It's a old tractor, there will be problems with it. But no computer, thats a nice problem to have.

Depends on what you are doing with it.

Me. You couldn't give me one of those cabs as a gift. Ran a 1466 as a kid with a Deluxe. Grew to hate them.  Awkward for me to get into and then noisy to run. And it was a low hr survivor when we got rid of it in 2007. Under 2000 hrs. So the cab wasn't clapped out either.

If the cab is roached out. How much are you going to spend on a cab that wasn't that great to begin with? Or are you going to save the money and make the rest of the tractor solid and run it open.

There were two reds and a white around years ago. Granted the white was on a low rpm 14 which made some difference in operator noise but the white cab had heavier doors that did not flex when closed. The ability to open the side windows if you didn't have a/c was a big deal but otherwise the white version was preferred.
