Tmtbob Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 In defense of the horse. If he was standing there awhile and fell asleep that was his natural instinct taking over. I know you guys know that to and not trying to teach anything with it. I just need to see more of that animal to say you can’t do that on that horse. I know I can’t do that on it cause I can’t jump that high anymore. He very well could do that daily with it but the one time he made a mistake when horse was sleeping and all it heard was footsteps approaching fast and reacted. I made a similar mistake on one of my rope horses years ago. Was at a friends house in the practice pen and backed my horse in the head box then we visited for 15 maybe 20 minutes. I should of walked him out or at least checked him up but I didn’t. I made my loop and nodded for my steer and my horse first movement was up instead of out. I leaned forward ready for the blast off and when he came up he jammed the horn in my gut hard. Had a bruise that looked like I took a hoof to the belly and still feel the lump it made. Got the steer roped but I was hurting for several days and actually went to a dr about it and that don’t happen unless I’m miserable. 3 Quote

NOt going to pass judgement on the guy doing the jumping and whether there was beer and a bet involved. ? Pretty obvious to me he scares the horse. And a very natural kick then flight response. It's all national forest along the the Buffalo River and Big Creek and several smaller creeks. We absolutely love riding here and the terrain and challenging riding is awesome. We camp at a private campground that is off grid and surrounded by national forest. The people are great and it's just a good time. We don't ride with groups and do our own thing including getting turned around and almost lost sometimes but that's what makes it fun. We covered 15 or 16 miles Friday and 10 Saturday. It may not seem like alot but it is rough terrain. 6 Quote
searcyfarms Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 those are all great, we had a welch pony growing up, she was the best baby sitter for kids ever, great stuff in AR, we used to leap onto the horses like that years ago too, never had that happen. Did get trompled by a stallion once in his pasture, got thrown many times, had a buggy accident once mare reared up and got tangled in the harness and took down the other horse, also had a runaway buggy once ( dropped a rein ), horses are just an accident waiting to happen and the faster you go the bigger the wreck. Still love them tho 1 Quote

Still love them tho I know you love horses and the comment is common sense and from experience. OUt here we have had more people and little kids injured since the 4 wheelers and SxS's came along. Most people wouldn't put their child on a horse that wasn't a kids horse. I know accidents with animals can always happen but it seems like they have no problem letting them ride a 4 wheeler. Just this afternoon leaving in the truck, I listened to an ambulance call. 12 yo male, Ranger accident out in a pasture. Unconscious then conscious and breathing. Took the Rescue unit a long time to get to the scene, rough country. Then they called for another unit with ALS (never good). Made it back to Valentine and flew him out. Haven't heard a family name yet but damn I am getting tired of these calls. Seems like when everyone was horseback, injuries weren't as severe. Yeah, kids got bucked off or fell off, cried a bit, wiped their nose and got back on. A horse has a brain and another set of eyes to keep you out of trouble. I wish we could go back to those days. Just grab the big old hand brake, slow this old world down and enjoy the cattle work horseback with family and friends. Apologize for my soapbox. And in a lot of ways they were better than today. aaaaah yes, horses vs ATV or UTV, worse we ever got hurt was broken arm ( sister ) , bruises from kicks, ( me a couple times while horses were fighting over feed/hay and I was in the wrong spot, not their fault, concussion for my daughter trying to catch a young horse and got kicked in the head, which then turned into a tramatic brain injury when she had a follow up injury just a couple mos later sledding - she missed her entire junior year of H/S, was a slow healing process for the brain. I think i had more hurt pride from horses than actual severe injuries but i can tell you i may not be here when the stallion got me down in pasture, hit me full on with his chest, got me down trompling me in the process and then swung around and was rearing up to finish me with front feet, luckily mom/dad/neighbors saw it happen and were running to my rescue and he backed off - i had no wind to move much from him stepping on my chest, had a hoof print for a long time from that. busted lips, bloody noses, skinned up, bruised but hardly anything compared to motorcycle injuries - last atv injury from my buddy and I deer hunting he ended up with surgery and pin/screws in his wrist. I get it, miss the slowness, miss the simple, miss the good natured neighbors now you worry about being sued when your dog kills a chicken - we are surrounded by city folk who moved 20 miles from walmart like me. I am the neighborhood go to when things get dicey out here LOL. Not like i am some super man but i do have a little bit of teh school of hard knocks to advise some common sense with. 1 Quote

The truth of this was brought home the first time I moved cattle on a THREE wheeler(aging myself here) and hit a sinkhole. Ouch. Now I'm 58 years old and still a hot headed speed junkie. 800cc's of Polaris's best at hand and I realise I really would be better served with a good Dog. 2 Quote

Left: Thomas T Tom-Cat Middle: Marvin the Goose (belongs to our neighbor----but is a frequent visitor with us) Wrangler Horse (always chairman of the board) All have special personalities.
