I have one of those in the basement also from when I moved into this house.  I hope we don't get that desperate.  I helped a few times doing laundry that way when I was a kid, but wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis with 3 kids.

I run a 10 year old Speed Queen at our house.  It has the knobs, but I believe the high end new Speed Queens have gone to the electronic controls.  You can still get the knobs if you drop down a few models.  The list price is still $1,695.00 for the lower end model though.

Wife has a Speed Queen not sure what model, it senses the load size and adjusts water usage accordingly. Would get another in a minute. Only issue is that sometimes when you push the start button it doesn't start. You have to unplug and let the electronics reset. Doesn't happen often enough to really call it an issue or bother to call the repairman. No idea what it cost and don't care.

We had a 12 year old whirlpool.  Never a minute of trouble.  All at once it went to acting up.  Might spin, might not.  Might wash, might not.  Have a great local appliance company that does in house visits. Very reasonable.  Called them to come out. Tech looked it over and said the brain was going bad.  Says you need to consider a new washer.   Asked him what to buy.   He replied easy, get a basic model speed queen.  Said they never had service calls on them. 2 days later we had a speed queen in the house.  Wife loves it.  Says it washes my dirty work clothes cleaner than the whirlpool ever did.  I know when it spins the water out it plasters the clothes against the wash tub.   She says they dry faster because it has slung all the water out of them.

Got two Maytag wringers setting here. Just need the room to put them in. Wife would like to use them she says. That's all mom washed 12 children and my parents clothes in . 1953 thru 2006. She didn't want anything else.

Maytag stopped being maytag in about 06 or 07. I was there when they auctioned off all the equipment. 6 other folks and I kept the boilers going that last winter as the place was cut up and sold. So anything after 06 is defiantly rebranded whirlpool. Maytag is dead. The best ones were 60s thru early 80s. Even the last toploads were not bad in the dependable care line. Atlantis,which was a topload as well, was not as good. The front load...well it was a front load. 🤷‍♂️

Maytag owned Amana when whirlpool bought them so I suspect nothing more than a rebranded whirpool as well.

Wife says when our old Maytags become unrepairable, she will probably get a speed queen.  Far as we can tell closest to the old Maytag in quality.

Amana top load HD something is best.  Has 2 knobs on top panel and most easy to replace pumps etc.  Here its $600 new with warranty.    Then you step up to SpeedQueen and other commercials which if good are 10k++++ each.  We should try some speedqueen but ....man the guys overload so much I hate seeing them wreak 1700 dollar units vs 600 frankly.  Some have gottent eh big commercial units.  $100,000 for 2 washer and huge dryer!  Say its cool, but if they are down its a $1400 bill for anything.

 

Guy we grab freshened up ones from says anythin gnewer then 2010 2015 are poor qualit generally speaking.  Samsung are right there with may-flood as well.

We have a company from Mi. That puts two washers and dryers in our parlor and they take care of the repairs. If one goes down you slide the other one in and call and let them know and within a few days they stop and fix it. They also supply the cow towels for and it costs 120. 00  a month. Before that we had the same problem none of them held up.

i knew a cheapskate who had 17 brand new washing machines bc he bought them in bulk for like 100 bucks a unit, he died and had 18 brand new push mowers in his shed and a lot of other stuff, how is wife stayed idk

Have an LG front load and dryer. Dryer has been alright. Have had to tear the washer to pieces a couple times already. The appliance shop that I got parts from says that the LG’s and Samsungs are no longer any better than any other one. He doesn’t like them on the basis that they are generally harder and more expensive to repair.

My mom has an LG, I don’t know just how big the drum is, but it’s enormous, no agitator. Ours is a stacked unit, so a very small drum. As I start and end my day at my folks, my bulky stuff, like bibs and sweatshirts often get washed over there… an added bonus is that if I throw a load in in the morning, it’s usually dry and folded when I get back in the afternoon.. from my perspective those LG washers go the extra mile…no complaints 😉

Parents are on their 2nd set of junk new appliances. Even as bare bones as you can get, in certain modes like "heavy sheets" or Normal, it sounds almost as if... There is a plastic gear stripping out when it changes from Wash to Rinse. 

Glad i have an 80s Soul. Give me a Kemore 80 series HD!

Regardless of the brand, avoid those that are ‘HE’(high efficiency). You want one that lets you select the water level. The ones that alter the water level by ‘determining’ the size of the load are a pain in the butt. If possible, also get one that lets you adjust the rinse water temperature.
