But I helped get a free tractor home for one of the Old Guys.  Yes it is green but it was free and kinda unique.

The lady’s husband had passed away and it was just sitting for several years.  Bad rear tire, something wrong with the rearend.

It is a JD 435 with a 2-53 Detroit. I think only made a couple years. This one is a 1960.

Curt had been a life long diesel mechanic so it didn’t take him long to get it running.  Kinda neat motor for what it is.  I had a tire sitting in the shed so that problem was solved. Turned out the outer wheel bearing was out. Cracked the tube also when the bearing came apart. Curt is a pretty good welder also so he took care of the crack.  New bearing, race and seal has her rolling again. We found out a gasket is leaking on the rearend which likely caused the bearing failure. Easy fix, helps to keep oil in it.

Curt will likely get it repainted this winter and it will be ready to parade next summer.

I think a few thousand were made, have to look it up again. I’ve seen a couple dolled up and for sale on the internet. I think one was $19K which I don’t see how it could possibly worth that. Maybe I don’t know what we have here.

It's not a bentstack black dash 4020 (If you know, you know) but they are not plentiful

Neighbor had one.  Sold about 8 years ago and he got $10,000 out of it and it was a non runner.  Id almost feel bad taking a tractor like that for free unless there is more to the story.  But congrats to him.  He needs to dig into it and find if it has any options.  435s as a whole aren’t really rare but break them down by options then they could be.  For example, only 245 were made with 4 speed transmissions, 118 with 34 in tires, 39 with dual touch o-matic, and 30 with a 1,000 rpm pto and so on.   The 435 is not a 430 with a diesel engine but a 440 diesel adapted to agricultural use.

He had no idea what the tractor was, just that it was JD and had a Detroit in it.  I wouldn’t have gave $1000 for that tractor, maybe $500 in its condition. But what do I know about JDs?

5 speed trans, 28” tires, single TOM, 540 pto, power steering, two way hydraulics. What other options might there be?

Sounds like a ROTM 435.  Slightly less than 1,000 of them had swept back front axle.  The only other thing he could hang his hat on is 619 were made with power steering.

You say you would feel bad for getting that tractor for free ....I'd say that who ever bought your neighbors over paid by epic proportions. My uncle and cousin had an extensive JD collection and they said the market fell out 6-8 years ago on these 2 cylinders

For what tractors??  Sure As and Bs can be had cheap enough your dumb to pay more then a couple thousand but thats no different than Farmall Ms and Hs.  This summer I went to a local auction that featured several restored JD 2 cylinder diesels and AR.  They all went for around $5,000 give or take.  Funny part is the buyers were from YOUR STATE!!!  YOUR STATE!  That wouldn't be either your cousin or uncle buying them??  I haven't seen a dip in any 2 cylinder but the super common models.  435s are unique tractors and buyers paying a premium for them is no different then the stupid prices Farmall Super MTAs were bringing and maybe still are bringing.
