Nice day at an auction

Had a fun day at the Restoration Tractor Sales summer auction. Those folks put on a really nice sale. The owners father even made ice cream all day to serve. Really nice machines there, wish I could have brought them all home.

I wish I could have been there. I think it's Jessie's grandfather that did the ice cream. Did you buy anything or much or just have a relaxing day?

Well his grandfather made some good stuff. Just bought a couple parts. Other than that just enjoyed the day. And the break in the humidity!

I've never been there or met the guy (Jessie) personally, but what a great and unique outfit he's got. Buying these tractors fixing what needs fixed and selling them is a noble cause in this tractor nerds book. He seams to have done well and I hope he continues to do very well. If he ships  which I'm sure he does, I'd seriously consider buying from him.

  I've talked to him over the phone and he comes across as a guy who is on top of everything he handles.  Kind of hard to duplicate what is done there as the ground in SE PA is extremely expensive even in Midwestern terms.  This helps in terms of borrowing money or selling to raise capital for another business.  While younger I would have had the drive for such as business but coming up with the money would have been a major obstacle.

It was a terrific auction. Very well done.

That 503-hour 966 brought $37K and that particular 1066 was $25K and had 3,894 hrs.

Looks like some nice iron. Don’t know how lucky you are to still have an onsite auction to go to. Pretty rare to get a live auction here now. Just about every auction has gone to online bidding only here now. It’s just not the same.

I had a fun day at the auction as well. It is a lot of work to get all the pieces in place for the auction but once we have them lined up it is neat to see.

Yes it was Jesse's grandfather that made the ice cream, it was excellent, and his mom handles making the sandwiches and another young guy makes the chicken BBQ which is excellent as well.

I got a couple parts, a few pieces I was looking for for my own tractors.

I got to talk to several familiar faces and customers from all over the place.

Farming enthusiast- yes he can ship anything anywhere. The farthest I remember a tractor going is to New Zealand, so any closer then that is relatively easy. 

It was a beautiful day for the sale with the break in the humidity and the hot temps. 

It sounded like we will get to do it all over again in December from what he announced at the end of the sale so hopefully we can see you guys again then.

Thanks for you and your co worker's to get ready for these sales . It's lots of work especially with as many tractors with a ride and drive warranty on them. Lots of neat tractors and accessories to have multiple sales per year. I really think the price was soft on the 8950 with 6 new tires . Tires would cost most people $10,000 or more I'm guessing now

I was thinking exactly the same thing.I didn't know why the auctioneer didn't state "you have at least 10k in new tires".To have a JD4440 bring more,40k, was a insult unless its going to be parked as a investment. I watched some of it in YouTube

Yea the Magnums made me scratch my head a little bit.  The 8950 did have a lot of value in rubber on it. All three were pretty slow going on the bidding for the last couple grand I thought.

We have a 1066 we bought from him. He is top notch in my book. Fair and honest. We flew in and met him on a day he was closed and he met us at his shop so we could look at it in person.

I have been wanting to go to the last few of his sales but didn’t make it work. I am glad I made this one, I stopped out at his shop the end of June while out that way to pick up a couple parts from the spring auction. They were nice enough to keep them all that time until I made it out. I got to meet Jesse while there and said he was probably going to do an August sale. So made plans from there. I’ll reach out for the next one if I can make, would be fun to meet you.

A ~500 hour 966 that was repainted and has aftermarket decals is a big red flag for me...... Glad they got what they did for it....

Yes.To me the idea of a 500 hr tractor is to keep it original. Why paint it and have to rebuild it ? Now it looks like any other red tractor with a rebuilt engine.

Alright.  I'll bite on the 9. 

The hours are correct. 

Pedals had zero wear

Paint wasnt wore off of anywhere including the platform

Still had the pipe on the frame (not that that itself means anything)

The little spring clips that hold the shifter side to side weren't broke

The tires were 50 years old and needed replacing.

Had a dent in the left hood. Pretty hard to replace that with a good one and not have it look like a spotted cow. Even if you found the other nicest straightest perfect paint original one out there it wouldn't match correctly.

It probably wouldn't have brought a dollar more with the CIH decals.

I don't think it's any secret what time does to these 400 series engines although cavitation wasn't the problem on this one. I don't remember what was. I was busy on my own projects or was baling straw. Whatever it was they found they were not just going to put the head back on and cover it up.

I agree it looks like any other ex dairy farmer or midwest rancher livestock queen with a fresh coat of paint, which bothers me because I like to keep stuff original if I can, but it's not. The tractor deserved way better than old tires and a dented hood. 

I doubt it was an easy decision to paint it but anyone that would bother to look at it would see the quality of the tractor and the fact that Jesse isnt trying to hide anything nor in the business of playing with hours.

Yes,I am not saying he was trying to cover anything up.It's just takes originality from it.Yes,bad,pitted liners are not surprising from a low hour 400 series engine that had been sitting .I had one I had to OH because of sitting for years before I bought it.Just why wouldn't present it the way it was.If it had a valve cover leak,announce it and so be it.I guess it would up to the purchaser if they wanted to redo it.But it probably was more profitable for him to sell it that way and on the other hand already restored and a better deal for the guy buying it.
