New tires and replacing all the suspension bushings, ball joints, tie rods, idler arm, centre link and shocks. We ended up having to pull the headers to access the lower control arm bolts, had to lift the engine and remove the starter to get them out. A terminal broke on the solenoid but we were able to get a new solenoid for $30. Josh has done most of the work himself, I did the control bushings and the risky parts with the coil springs. He’s done well, handled it better than when he started in the trade 2 years ago. I had a 62 F-85 with the 215 Aluminum block V8. They sure improved the looks by 68. This one is going to drive like new with all that suspension work. 1 Quote

This one is going to drive like new with all that suspension work. I really enjoy jobs like this on newer cars and classics. Not all of them get as many new parts as the Oldsmobile, but whatever they need. Making sure that every alignment adjustment is free to move like butter. On a car like this F-85 the bolts that hold the upper control arm and the shims to adjust camber/caster can be corroded, depleted threads etc. Having it all apart and clean, new shims, new bolts makes it so easy to adjust. Most of the time I stack a generous amount of varying thickness of shims and simply have to pull a couple out. Shims come in 1/64,32,16,8 inch sizes so you can imagine if you are fighting a corroded, dirty frame/shim/bolt/control arm rod, you’re going to chase your tail a bit. Same thing with a cam bolt or tie rod end, if it doesn’t move like butter then it’s not going to turn out the best. I have been doing alignments since 2007, in Eastern Ontario, where salted roads exist over half the year. I know a few tricks to overcome seized adjustments when the situation is right, a happy medium that will keep tires and drive well when budget and vehicle condition is low. When the vehicle is of good condition like this Oldsmobile and needs this attention, nothing but the best will do. Can’t skimp on a single detail and the end product will always satisfy. 2 Quote

lotsaIHCs Posted June 20 Posted June 20 Replacing the radiator in my daughter's car. It has a cracked tank and leaking. Can't complain too much, it is 20 years old and has 216k miles on it. I bought it for $500 about 5 or 6 years ago with a broken timing belt. Replaced the belt and all of the valves and it was good to go. I'm working next to my 1066 just to keep it IH related! 8 Quote
lotsaIHCs Posted June 20 Posted June 20 It's amazing how a rubber hose will stick to something after 20 years! Finally got the old radiator out but man did those transmission cooler hoses stick! Ready for the new radiator. If you look REAL close you can see a tiny crack next to the mounting boss for the cooling fan. It's pretty evident in the picture but with the radiator in the car it was hard to see. I had to use my pressure tester to find it. Quote
Trefor685 Posted June 20 Posted June 20 Shortly I will be kicking a 1984 ih 4 cylinder 685 which UK dvla saying it has a 4599 cc diesel having the fuel lift pump on the RHS, with the siamezed 2 port exhaust manifold ( no lid on top of exhaust pipe for past 24 years ), the haudraulic pump is on this side on back of timing chest, and the fuel filters, inj pump and *fire in inlet manifold* are on the lhs with the starter motor. Could anyone help with info please on this engine and transmission, parts exploded views would be wonderfull. Going round in circles getting info, I need your help . All info greatly recieved...thanks Quote
lotsaIHCs Posted June 21 Posted June 21 And it is in! Still have to connect the upper radiator hose and bleed the system but on the downward slope. Yes, this was a Chinesium radiator, but so is the OE one. OE, where I used to work was $244, this was $65. The $65 radiator I put in my wife's car about 3 years ago is performing just fine. A racoon took hers out. Quote

Are you sure of the model number? 1 Quote

yellowrosefarm Posted June 23 Posted June 23 Both rear window regulators on my Yukon went out on the same day a couple of weeks ago. What are the odds of that? So after a delivery from RockAuto, I put the new ones in this evening, along with 2 new speakers. Old ones were blown and I was right there anyway. 6 Quote
