The awesome picture thread

this is one of my favorite pictures as a pic and because I knew the guy. He passed last year. The picture was taken in Ponoma, California at the 1968 Winter Nationals with his hemi powered AA/Altered Class when he set a new NHRA national record. He was a dairy farmer and self taught himself wrenching and racing on the farm. He was as tough as they come and if anyone looks at that car these days they are in awe of the size of balls it took to drive it ( death trap). I forget his best time but is was around 8 seconds - I emailed one of his buddies to find out , He is in the Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame- Charlie Haviland, Wilsonville Ontario

 The other pic is about 10 years ago at one of our car club picnics where Charlie fired up the Charlie Horse for a cackle fest

I've been into racing for 50+ years, and altereds always made everyone perk their ears up.

That three window is qute.

just found this on the internet but its not exact"The Altered was able to travel the quarter-mile with an eight-second posting at 170 mph."

It was always the short wheelbase that put them in the nutz category.

sorry didn't see that, That 3 window coupe is a kit car but as sweet as they come. it had leather guts, tilt cruise, air and was perfect

this one is a Chev steel car and he drove it everywhere . take a look at that engine?

I was gonna say 348 but I saw the plate........ Is it a four speed  dual quad positraction 409????

I have a picture of me about 6 months old in my old mans arms with his foot resting on a '28 chevy.

at a car event another racer showed up with his modern 7 1/2 second rail drag car. we were looking at the Charlie Horse and I asked him if he would drive it ............ he replied " No f*ckin' way"

thanks, some people are totally paranoid about their license plate on the net. I don't think its a big deal and I doubt if Brian would but its best to not put it up I guess

My understanding is they started with the GAU-8/A Avenger and built an airplane around it?

Talking about planes, my step dad was in vietnam, said they run around with a big plan, I assume the a-10. It was nicknamed Puff. Had an auto gun on it capable of some absurd amount per minute.. I'll have to ask him if he has any pictures. 

Googled it, was called spooky I guess also. Ac-47?? Does that sound correct?

Probably a C-97? Gunship.  Current version is the AC130. 
 

 

they have multiple Gatling style guns, in calibers of 7.62 mm to 20 mm.  There are USAF crewman who’s job is to shovel brass away from the cannons with aluminum grain scoops.

The AC-47 Spooky was the first generation gun ship, replaced by the AC-130 Spectre, which was also called Puff the Magic Dragon.  Per Wikepedia, it's armament at one time consisted of "two 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannons, one L60 Bofors 40 mm cannon, and one M137 105 mm cannon and M37 recoil mechanism from the M102 howitzer" with various revisions over the years.

I mentioned to an AC130 crewman at an airshow once that it'd be pretty dangerous to shoot at that plane.  He said "they better hit us the first time".

He said when stuff started getting tight, that plane was better than a helicopter. If you were pinned down, there was no better sound than them guns firing. Said there wasn't much for vegitation when the plane flew off.
