Well he could be at home brushing up on his calculus, but I think it’s unlikely.

I had to take calculus in college. It sucked. 😂 I've never used it so it never did me any good.  However,  the cooking class I took in high school serves me daily. 🤩

Been a few decades since I had Calculus and differential equations in engineering school. It weeded out many former high school honor roll students...

I went decades without health insurance but I am a generally healthy person. If I had to buy insurance I could not have made the payments many years farming. My ex wife carried insurance on the kids at the time.

Now for a comment that is not popular with most people of any political party.

I feel insurance companies are at the root of our high insurance costs. Private Health insurance should abolished. Either everyone pay out of pocket or pay more taxes and let the government pay it all.

The United States has the most expensive health care in the world by a very large margin. Yet we have a life expectancy of a better third world country...

EVERY first world country has better life expectancy at a fraction of our cost.

IMHO YMMV

The young man was and is still working. When working pays less than what is needed to buy something that everyone should have then reform is needed. The alternative is he goes without insurance and uses the ER as his primary care.

A quick DDG search says that the average cost of health insurance for an 18 year old male in Wisconsin is $400-600/month depending on coverage and deductibles. The Wisconsin Department of Health website says the monthly income limit for an adult single coverage is $1,330.   If you’re capped at $1330 and insurance would cost you $500 that means making $1331-1900 per month is not a wise choice. This could be an opportunity for the OP to mentor and teach the young man something and help him make the best choices, not deciding to do something because he thinks it might affect his insurance coverage. No one is living it up on $1300/month while “scamming” the system for free health care.

The individual in question is voluntarily working less than 20 hours a week so he can continue to get free government hand outs.

THATS THEFT!!!.

You stated "When working pays less than what is needed to buy something that everyone should have then reform is needed."

Please define "something that everyone should have" what exactly is covered under that statement.  I guarantee you they're is things i need that you don't,  why should the American citizens pay to give me those things?

I have a close friend who is looking to retire in her late 50’s, soon, to take care of an adult child with health concerns and an ailing older husband.   They could pay any bill, no problem, but she’s been contemplating working enough hours to still qualify for some sort of partial health insurance, because she was quoted 20k a year for -single- coverage, on a plan with a 10k deductible.

We’ve always had family coverage through my wife, so I don’t know a lot, but I know she use to pay about nothing…maybe $20-30 a week, and now it’s $120 a week, and if we need something, i feel like I pay plenty out of pocket.   Urgent care visit is $200 or so, prescriptions seem to be $20-40, and when my daughter in college two years ago needed a mri  -she had 4 fractures in her foot-, that visit had s $6k copay.

I know people with significantly less income, that say they pay $0 or 5 for prescriptions and very little or nothing for Dr visits . Idk how it works but it isn’t right

Yes before that time my employer covered me for free and my family for peanuts. Not the case anymore, it’s hundreds per week for worse coverage, so that’s not the world we live in today.

Classic case of the government "fixing" something,  and in the end screwing it WAY WAY UP.

Funny you admit that it used to be better but then earlier you made this statement,  basically saying we need more government involvement. Government needs to get out of the way.

Everyone should have health insurance.  No one is denied medical treatment regardless of their ability to pay. Without insurance we all pay more to cover those that can’t (or won’t) pay any.

If the gov got completely out of the way and left healthcare totally unregulated I doubt it would get better, unless of course you had deep pockets to pay for it.
I never said Gov needs to run it, but there has to be a regulating body of some sort which is the role of government in civilized societies.

Then add $500+ dollars a month per person for health insurance

Let know me where you are finding that price

Show me 1 person who's denied health care, like sorry we won't treat you......

This is America, EVERYONE has access to Healthcare. If you wanted to,  you could medicate yourself to live 107 years,  or you can choose to never pay a dime and risk dieing at 35. That's the facts.

You seam to think the American taxpayer should pay for you to live to 107 because you feel it's your right to live that long...... sorry it's not a right.

Again, show me 1 person who's been denied Healthcare, not 1 person who thought it was too expensive, I want a person who was told "No, we're refusing to treat you". You never will.

Now explain to me why the America tax payer should pay for my health care.

Should those working for non-profits get the same credit if they work 40 hours per week?  What about clergy?

Sounds good in theory. It took my daughter 4 months of applications and interviews to get a full time job to go with her part time job. Does she get penalized for not working 40 hours a week even though she spent a lot of hours trying to get a full time job?

A fair number of high school students made honor roll via taking classes such as band, chorus, and home economics.  I graduated in the top quarter of my class out of 180 students but took math and science classes plus courses such as small engines.  It did not matter much as high school is a popularity contest.  Some courses such as gym class had very inconsistent grading where a varsity sport player got extraordinary credit for things they did not participate in outside of gym class.

There is no such thing as a non-profit the people working there usually profit from the government grant that pays their salary.

But yes if you volunteer full time then you should get a pass on the penalty.

Why not? If the consumer is  forced to buy anything, why should the providers control costs?

With competition,  the providers can only  charge  what the market will bear....thus competing with  other providers in a finite environment.

There could be a grace period as long as the person is looking but if you can't find your ideal job in a year then should take a lesser job in the mean time

Running a country requires everyone to chip in not expecting hand outs

One thing about the aforementioned $1330 cap to qualify for free healthcare. $1330 per month is $8.31/hr based on a 40 hour workweek. Here, McDonald's starting wage is ~$15/hour, although they usually limit employees to 30 hours per week. Even at that, monthly income would be $1800/month. And you would have time left over to take on a side job for a little extra money. There is also the government run health insurance (ACA) where you can get subsidized insurance based on your income. I agree that health insurance is crazy expensive. I found that out when I went looking for insurance outside of my employer. I also found out that clinics charge less when you don't have insurance. An office visit for my wife used to be about $300 out of pocket with insurance. Without insurance her last bill was $160.

Now, it's the opposite. You work a 40+ hour week all your life until you retire, then you start paying the penalties.

No

You pay a penalty if you don't work full time before you retire.

19% of the able bodied population in the working age range do not work

How many are women that choose to stay at home or are required to work in the home for no pay such as Mennonite women?  Large college campuses where there are simply not close to having enough jobs for everybody enrolled to pick up 10 or more hours per week?  What do employers do for the four months where the students are gone or during semester when they need people for when students are not available?  Non-students could not make a living off of irregular hours or times.  What about physically qualified but not mentally fit individuals?  Everybody wants the person who can work lightning fast but what about those who with their best effort can't come close to that even if it is stacking canned goods at Walmart?

Have a friend running an IH truck dealership in NY state.  He had a truck in recently for a work. It was 2? years old but not in warranty (that seemed odd to him).  Anyways.... it ran from NY to CAL every week.  It was team driven.  4 days out and back per trip.  Then another team got in the truck and did the same run.  SO....these guys worked one week on, 1 week off and made good $$$.   There are LOTS of good paying jobs out there.  People have become lazy and don't want to work now.

Everyone needs to chip in that is able bodied that is the general expectation I expect from others in this country.

If a  person can afford a stay at home wife that doesn’t generate taxable income then they pay her tax penalty.

I specifically said NO ONE is denied health care, even if they have no ability to pay. Many people do not have health insurance, some by choice and some because it’s literally unaffordable. They can all get health care when needed.

Senior citizens are eligible for Medicare. That is paid by taxpayers.

Why not?

Because free market capitalism has to have rules and someone to enforce them. Otherwise it becomes a Monopoly game.

Not everyone can qualify for a CDL nor can everyone be gone from home for four days. And has anyone really ever wanted to work for someone else? Probably not, but we have things we want and need to survive so off to work we go.

What about self employed?
What about places that won’t hire people for 40 hour weeks?
Way too many what-ifs and what-about a for that to ever work.

Point #1 so what's your issue then? Seams to me the population has spoken and if they want to play the game of pay insurance to live to 107 or die young they can, it's their choice.

#2 seniors paid in, why shouldn't they get to use it?  Vastly different than avoiding work to get free state Healthcare.

#3 sounds awfully communist to me.....letting the government dictate what free market businesses can do. Ironic you say that considering Healthcare was cheap and readily accessible prior to 08 when big gov mandate insurance "so it could get cheaper because we're all paying".... how'd that work out.....

#4 only bolsters what others have said.  If you want nice things,  get your butt to work. Seams an easy decision.

#5 Again ironically tons of people worked a 40 hour week and we're self employed until the .gov got in the health insurance game and then it all went sideways.  Seems the easy solution would be for the .gov to get out and let capitalism work.

If health care is too expensive,  no one buys it,  and prices are forced down.  When government mandated we buy insurance,  that puts a floor under the costs and now they're is no reason to lower prices because everyone is forced to buy. Takes out competition and kills the free market. The government has made a Monopoly out of Healthcare, the exact opposite of what you claim you don't want to happen.

Self-Employed pay income tax,you have to pay in quarterly based on last years tax burden .

The they can get another job that makes up the difference our they can volunteer at charity/community service group for the balance.

You get a tax penalty now if you don't have heath insurance so adding that to the income tax would be easy.

You check a box and it adds in the penalty for those that don't meet the requirement.

Every able bodied person needs to contribute
