Yes, because everyone in government is virtuous and their motives are pure. In fact, it is the total and complete opposite. They are some of the worst, most corrupt people who are alive today and they can’t be trusted. They need to get out and stay out. Most of the people writing the “rules” are buffoons if not outright criminals. 4 1 Quote

Most that are “affordable” are high deductible plans with high max out of pocket coverage. Isn’t that the rub? The minute you use it, your premiums increase. Same for most insurance policies. Use your auto insurance, they increase your rate or drop your coverage. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Government’ role was to monitor and regulate the insurance industry, yet somehow or someway they were happy to overstep that line and not read the bills they pass before they pass them… Quote

mike newman Posted June 19 Posted June 19 ...as a 'foreigner '' travelling to the US of A......and being of a considerable degree of antiquity...Health Insurance is absolutely mandatory....and the last time I visited , the insurance cost was twice the cost of the 'peasant' air fare.... $NZ4,500.00 to be precise...two yrs gone.. .....we are told , by the American Embassy, that without insurance, should one require medical assistance for what ever reason, one will be 'repaired'..but untill the cost is repaid, one's passport will be with held.... Fair enough...as a nondomestic visitor...not contributing to the tax system....those are the rules..... ..in New Zealand , there is no mandatory health insurance....every one from the useless bloody piss head to the normal working male or female...will get sorted...but this is heavily subsidised by the employers.....who pay a levy to cover accident contingency's etc...and of course , these daze the 'Health and Safety ' brain dead robots are there in force...doing nothing but feeding from the tax payers trough.... lotsaIHCs Posted June 19 Posted June 19 "Senior citizens are eligible for Medicare. That is paid by taxpayers." That statement is dubious at best. I have been paying into taxes and social security withholding for well over 40 years. I would say that I have paid in to fund my Medicare coverage myself. Those who choose not to work full time and receive free healthcare are double or triple dipping the system. 1- they are getting free healthcare at the expense of taxpayers. 2- they aren't contributing enough in the form of social security and income taxes to cover any of their own medical expenses. 3- they will still draw social security, Medicare and or Medicaid even though they have contributed little. 3 Quote

whweldit Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Lucky enough to have insurance thru teacher retirement. Now on Medicare. Ever since the president plan came to be, our premiums went up drastically and coverage while still good is not as good as before. Know of several with better bank accounts than mine that somehow qualify for health insurance at basically no cost. They do not work so there for they have no income. Yet they draw dividends from stocks and such. Does not make sense or seem fair but it is what it is. Rubs me raw when they speak of how cheap their insurance is. Few others I know that are on disability. They work odd jobs for cash so as not to mess up their check. Sad thing is they are in better shape than me. Quote

I never said they didn't pay anything in. I said they paid in less than they could have. I also said they will still draw Medicare/Medicaid without paying in their share. And even if you have never worked a day in your life you still may qualify for Social Security SSI (Supplemental Security Income). SSI provides monthly cash to cover basic necessities like food and shelter. Quote

You pay by taxable income, income minus deductible expenses equal taxable income. Social Security is based on this as well. Self-employed persons pay the total amount. Those that get a W2 the employee pays half, and the employer pays half of the SS. 2 Quote

The statement/ question about being self employed working less than 40 hours was made by someone else and wasn't about taxes or social security. The poster was defending those who choose to work limited hours so they can receive free healthcare coverage. I was just responding to their statement/question. 1 Quote

Congress members making $175,000 / year and worth several million? By enforcement, what you mean is forcing someone to buy something that they don't want by penalizing them via the tax code. I paid 800$ penalty on income taxes because I didn't sign up for Obama care. Don't tell ME that the government needs to handle free enterprise. The government does not produce a single dollar. They are in the redistribution business.... by business, I mean the money that sticks to their fingers during this so-called "enforcement " of yours .... among other things, they have access to insider trading that the rest of us don't. Hillary Clinton, AOC, Bernie Sanders, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters ....all disgustingly rich from their "businesses" ....via our tax money....are the people you think should be "enforcing" the private sector. 1 Quote

In the context of this thread, it is easy to read that statement as meaning if someone wants healthcare coverage provided they should be working 40 hours/wk. Maybe the poster didn't mean that, but that is how I took it. Apologies if I am wrong. Self employed and working 25 hours/wk and paying for their own coverage, no problem. Good for them. Self employed, working 25 hours/wk and wanting free health coverage doesn't sound right to me. 1 Quote

Congress also doesn't enforce gun confiscation.... but they will certainly pass the law given the opportunity... at a nice , safe distance from the local enforcement with bullets flying over their heads. Incidentally, Maxine Waters called for violence against Trump supporters while surrounded by armed guards. You know, the person who can't enforce anything. But I digress... the original argument was about government control overall, and whether we could do better without them. I guess we will have to agree to disagree. Quote
