Geese in odd places

These were wandering around the food lion parking lot yesterday. They were completely indifferent to foot and vehicle traffic.

Down the road from my place is a pond, usually 5 or 6 familys of geese nest there each year.

 they have no fear of the automobile traffic as they believe the road by the pond is theirs.

We usually have one pair that hatch a nest of eggs every year on the bank of our lake. Think something got them this year because the nest is empty and no little ones have been seen. I’m good with that because they eat too much of the crops.

When someone posted about cranes awhile back there was some negative sentiment and I was surprised there wasn't much mention of geese, for the past 2 decades they have exploded into urban environments as has their population

Messy, but they are fun to watch. We have 14 ducklings at the moment, my wife has decided which are staying and which are going to the lady at school who wants some, she has zeroed in on one that has yellow patches on the feet and yellow chest, trouble is that it is growing 2x faster than the others and I am half convinced it’s a goose.

We have the resident flocks of Canada Geese. I detest them. They leave small dog sized green turds everywhere. I got attacked by one once just minding my business. I got it by the neck and was gong to twist it off but there were lots of people watching so I just tossed it. It didn't attack again so mission semi accomplished.

Park near downtown Portsmouth. It would have been a funny sight to see the tourists watch the thing flapping and running around headless!

Apparently the resident or non-migrating flocks are descended from decoy birds raised in captivity with no migration instinct.

Darn Canadian Air Force is constantly flying over my house. Many don’t migrate more, see them year around.

....a big problem in New Zealand's South Island...these birds are here in their     thousands.....as others mentioned, the ''excrement ''  from the geese really ''fowls ''   the pasture...and not content with that, the geese also frequent the very high country..

There is ongoing   organised    "'Goose Shoots "  on most major Stations...including where I work.....also at nesting time , people  go out and destroy the eggs.....

When I lived in Gardner, MA the geese were fouling the reservoir. The solution the town came up with was to have a hunt and reduce their numbers and discourage them. Sadly the folks in Cambridge and Boston got wind of it and descended upon the reservoir on the appointed day to protest along with Boston news crews. One brave guy did arrive and shot his goose, several in the crowd fainted and required medical care and counseling. The protesters said the reservoir should be covered at a cost of millions. No mention of invasive species.

The hunt was mid-week; protesters apparently don't work.
