1566 Posted March 17, 2025 Posted March 17, 2025 I'm working on a very cobbled together 1566 I purchased. The wiring is an absolute nightmare of scotch locks and stripped and taped connections. I have downloaded the wiring schematic from the 1566 repair manual from IH, but it is not a good Pic or schematic layout. Does anyone have something better to reference? Quote

At one time Bermuda Ken posted some links on here for some schematics. Cant remember when it was or the thread title now. I have some that I copied from that thread. What part of the schematic you needing? I had a 1066 BS in the shop awhile back that was that way. King of Scotchlocks got ahold of it. Wizbangs crimped a scotchlock to a wire about 2 inches from a threaded stud with ring terminals on it to get power for a CB or something. 😩 That was just one of the surprises I found. Quote
Drysleeves Posted March 17, 2025 Posted March 17, 2025 Might be better to re-harness the tractor and avoid possible issues such as a fire. Quote
756puller Posted March 17, 2025 Posted March 17, 2025 For 1000 dollars you can get all the harnesses perty much Quote
Jeff-C-IL Posted March 17, 2025 Posted March 17, 2025 I strongly advise you to get rid of the mess, call Porch Electric and get a new harness. I actually build harnesses - have all the professional tools and parts - and I would still not try to repair old tractor wiring and would order them rather than build myself. Patched old wiring is just more headaches going to happen at the worst possible time. The wire is usually all brittle & corroded, simply beyond successful repair 3 Quote
HydroTek Posted March 17, 2025 Posted March 17, 2025 The '66 harness is pretty simple as far as harnesses go just pull it out and make or buy a new harness The old insulation will be brittle anyways Quote

All I'm looking for is a readable schematic that I can reference. 1 Quote
snoshoe Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 I have 8 or 9 pages on my phone that were downloaded from cngco.com when they were still on the web. They are scanned from the service manual. Maybe a few fingerprints but seem clear enough to me. Tried the ad files button but they refuse to upload. 1 Quote
tractorholic Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 New harness beats a pita scabbed together harness any day in my book. Whether you’re a mechanic or not. You said yourself it’s an absolute nightmare. I’m not trying to make anyone mad but agree with some of the others. Some of these older tractors catch fire because of bad wiring 1 Quote

acem Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 My 826 has a bad wiring harness. I disconnected it. Then ran a wire from the one wire alternator to the starter battery stud (where the batter cable goes). Then a wire from the starter battery stud to the starter button and another from the button to the starter engage stud. Very simple and effective for basic operation. Starts the engine and charges the battery but no fuel guages, lights, etc. 1 1 Quote
Mike56073 Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 man i absolutely hate scotchlocks, those things should be outlawed. 2 Quote
Bermuda_Ken Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 The main and dash harnesses from Porch are $ 450. Those 2 will get you 95% fixed. IDK where anyone is getting the $1200 figure from. Even buying them from CNH is only $820. The more you REALLY look into them, the worse they are. No sense to patch them at all. 2 Quote

If a new harness is out of the question, and the 1556 does not have a cab and air conditioning, It certainly would not be hard to run wires and make it all work if a guy wanted to. 1 Quote
stronger800 Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 I missed the above post, $450 is a no brainer 1 Quote
1566 Posted March 18, 2025 Author Posted March 18, 2025 Thank you to the couple guys that emailed me the schematic to go off of! 30 minutes and were back in business! 2 Quote
stronger800 Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 Pull the plug off the clutch safety switch and stick a fence staple in it? Gotta wrap it in tape to be good Quote

stronger800 Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 Sorry I was kidding. You said it was all a mess. Mine all work too, it’s not like they are complex. 1 Quote
Shell1066 Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 Paid 870 for a complete harness for my 1066 two years ago. Best thing I ever did. When i sold it I could sleep knowing I did half )(*& it and cheat the next guy. Quote
7and8and1456 Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 My '56 series tractor Operator's manuals have diagrams showing all wires and a page of text telling names of wires , color of them and what they connect to. Did 66 series manuals not have that? Quote

Gotta wrap it in tape to be good I've seen many with the two wires stripped and connected with a wire nut. Actually looks decent but eventually works loose. I prefer a custom jumper wire. Quote
stronger800 Posted March 19, 2025 Posted March 19, 2025 Two male spades, the yellow sized ones, and a 1” U of wire? (Never seen such a thing….). 1 Quote
