I spent some time visiting my Uncle over Christmas.  He asked if we had ever done anything with Dad's 706 gas (291 ) tractor.  It has been sitting for many years with a pulled sleeve on a 50 hour overhaul.

My Uncle was an IH mechanic for many years.  He had an idea that I really like:  repower it with a 407 diesel.  It has the long framerails and hood already.  It would essentially be like an 856 Custom if we installed an 856 engine.  Would this work as well as I think?  Anyone tried this swap?  I appreciate your ideas.   Thanks!

you know as well as anybody the availability of good 407 engines. After finding an engine the easy part begins.

I question whether the 407 would fit under the hood.  I was thinking that the radiator housing and dash supports are shorter on the 706.  Would I need an 826 front casting and 806 dash towers?

I have a line on a 915 hi profile with a good running 407 in it.

It'll fit, I know of a 706 that has a DT361 in it, was from an 806 that did tractor pulling, the 806 got a DT466, the 706 received the old 361 pulling engine.  Don't think its exactly 361 cubes anymore, but that's irrelevant.  361 & 407 are the same height.  The overhang on the fuel tank will be your biggest hurdle.

wouldn't the 915 have the DT-436 in it ?

915 High-profile s/n 2349 & below could have the DT407.  S/N 2350 & above was the DT414.

That’s not just a 407, it’s a dt407 with the four roller pump as found in a 1456. (Assuming it is the 407, not the 414). The only downside I could see is if there is not adequate clearance for the turbo.

Find an 806 gas. The 706 uses a shorter steering column. Not much room for things like the air cleaner. Also shorter frame. A 706 is something like 6" shorter. 407 may be to long.

He already said it had the longer hood and rails.  (I know nothing of a Gas 706, but I thought the later 706’s were longer…like an 806.)

I have a turbo  806 and a turbo 856.   Love them.  I look for deals on clean, but in need of repair tractors all the time. If I could find a dead 706 or 806….I’d go straight to a 414/436/466….for parts availability alone.  You have a line in a 407…..but you probably Have dozens of 414’s.

I want to resurrect my Father's 706.  Just thought I might make it more useful and unique.  Folks would look at it and say:  Wait. They never built one that way!  Plus:  remember where i work, I just wait for the right parts to come along....

So how many 414’s do you have?  Ive seen guys just cut that whole front section often fuel tank right of. Put a plate over it

My Uncle also suggested a 414 swap.  Probably have 20 or 25 good 414 and 436 engines in combines at work.

With a torch and a welder, anything will fit!

But the project can get over whelming very quick and not completed.

I am all for fixing the sleeve that is simple and yet to be done.

I believe in the K.I.S.S. theory?

@nepoweshiekfarmalls There is a 756 factory non TA not to far from you that I helped a buddy, you  know him I'm sure, put a 5.9 cummins into, that is a wicked tractor! I think I would lean to that or a 400 series swap, 407 is a great engine and can be done, but like has been mentioned spendy to work on! If you wanna stay IH all the way I think a 400 or a 360 would be better, them darn 407 take a lot of work and pricey to do, though if you have a good one available go for it, worst case have to trim the fuel tank and some other minor stuff.  We had American Radiator, I think it was Midwest then, take the whole overhang off the fuel tank on my buddies, it can be done by any good welder, I just didn't have time to mess with it when we were putting it together. I would guess you probably got him some of the parts for that swap! He is just west of 330 and 65 split basically!

Does he still have that 291?
