I've rebuilt several that either wouldn't move at all or caused a huge amount of heat just from a tiny almost undetectable scratch in the block or valve plate, also the slippers can cause a pretty good oil loss if they get much damage Found the problem. The shaft between the hydrostatic motor and the transmission input is two pieces welded by JohnQueer and it’s busted. No penetration at all lol. 6 Quote

Fix the Deere, tinker with the boat, got a flathead ford V8 I’m going to start prepping the block for rebuild, forklifts leaving and arriving this evening, one going out on a loaner while I do a top end on his machine… need to go back to the ship for a vacation… 1 3 Quote

Is it possible that it was friction welded? 1 Quote

No rust and no evidence of ever having lugs/cleats. 7 spoke, but they’re narrower than standard Fordson rears… no idea what they’re from. finally got the valves and guides out of the flathead. First time I’ve used oxy/acetylene and an angle grinder to do a valve job… 5 Quote

V it out and TIG weld it, straighten in the lathe and slam it back together. Got gaskets ordered and of course the yoke on the front driveshaft is worn and you have to buy the whole fuggin shaft for $500… fuggin JohnQueer… 2 Quote
jeeper61 Posted October 23, 2025 Posted October 23, 2025 I wouldn't want to get another shaft from Jaunqueer Quote

I joined the ship two days ago. Haven’t left goderich yet. Shore side break down and we have to move from the dock twice to let saltys in and out. Quote
AngrySailor Posted November 22, 2025 Author Posted November 22, 2025 Got the head off buddys busted forklift just before I left for work. It’s a friggin Peugeot engine. Head is cracked and there was 2 gallons of coolant in the oil so I’m betting the bottom end is trashed. Supplier quoted $7800 for a head lol. That’s more than the Big Brodies on my 598 🤣🤣🤣 6 Quote

If all else fails I have a spare Nissan engine but would have to make a bellhousing adapter for it. That may not be in buddy’s budget… another option is a CAT (Hercules) 1404 if I can find one. Quote
