If all else fails I have a spare Nissan engine but would have to make a bellhousing adapter for it. That may not be in buddy’s budget… another option is a CAT (Hercules) 1404 if I can find one. Need to find one locally to rebuild… 1 Quote

He had a bumper sticker that said “Don’t laugh, your daughter loves it in the Astro”. He lost his license doing almost 140mph in a 60 with it. 1 5 Quote

Lol ok ok here’s some busted stuff… we blew up a main ballast pump. It’s a crummy Italian design pump with the impeller overhung and only supported from one side. It’s a fair size pump, 375hp motor runs it. The wear rings and impeller are pretty hurt but we didn’t have time/parts so we replaced the shaft bushing and mechanical seal and let’er buck… parts ordered for a full rebuild of both at winter lay up. 7 Quote

Interesting project . I used to love the pressure of there was no money for parts. Fix it , Mangement , would go back to there offices to embarrass they didn’t cut the budget more. 1 Quote

AngrySailor Posted December 13, 2025 Author Posted December 13, 2025 You jinx’d me Dennis. Now we got a cracked liner in the main engine… just pulled the head, hoping it was just o-rings leaking cooling water but the liner has an obvious crack… 1 2 Quote
AngrySailor Posted December 13, 2025 Author Posted December 13, 2025 More pics. Removed the piston. The crankcase pictures you’re looking at the top of the connecting rod/crosshead, we removed the piston rod from the crosshead, removed the stuffing box and lifted the piston. Next we’re lifting the liner. 6 Quote

We got her all back together just pre heating the jacket water and lube oil now. It will take hours before we can start her up though. we got a visit from the famous “Penguin Lady” yesterday 😂 one of our horn dog deck hands said “I’ve never been with a penguin”…🤣 4 1 Quote
AngrySailor Posted December 15, 2025 Author Posted December 15, 2025 We’re off and running. So far so good. Serious “new liner” smell in the engine room rn. It’s the storage oil smoking off the outside but so far so good. I got the “honours” of being on watch and taking her out, aka I’m the fall guy if it explodes 🤣. We increased the cylinder oiling to that unit, it’s a total loss oil injection for the cylinder lube but other than that no real break in. Chief and 2nd ran her no load for about an hour then shut down for a few hours for midnight departure. I fired her up and passed up bridge control and the captain put the stick to 11 🫣 2 Quote
