Thanks, just waiting for the details but it’s a full deal, paid leave, course fees and accommodations. Potentially starts in January which would suck as I’m only signing off the ship in a few days, fly home and drive out right away. But it would get me done that much sooner. There’s a course starting possibly in September and the next option is next January so another year. I’m not getting any younger… it will be bad enough hanging out with a bunch of 18yo college kids… 2 1 Quote
AngrySailor Posted December 25, 2025 Author Posted December 25, 2025 Serious spread the cook put on. Prime rib, pork belly, crab boil, roast duck, salmon, sushi, shrimp, deviled eggs, and a mountain of deserts… I’m about to burst here! 8 2 Quote
Alan Dinan Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 Very nice looking spread, sailor!! Merry Christmas to you and the crew having to be away from family for the holidays. 2 1 Quote

AngrySailor Posted December 28, 2025 Author Posted December 28, 2025 Stuck in Buffalo with sticky cargo that won’t unload. Got a killer pizza and a few cold snacks the other night. Found out we’re staying in port for a couple days yet so the guys are heading to the Bills game tonight. Not sure I’m going to join them, raining and cold and I’m not that hard core of a sports fan… 5 1 Quote

If I get a spot in the course next week it will be in Owen sound Ontario, next course start date I believe is in September in St. John’s NFLD. It’s really short notice but I’ve already sent my Yukon in to my friends shop for rush weekend service to get it ready for the drive which is 1200 miles… fuggggg. I might be in the road next couple days. Hoping to get confirmation tomorrow… it will suck as I just finished 6 weeks on the ship then off to school for 8 months no break but will be well worthwhile. Transport Canada does the certification as part A&B for each level of license. This course gets me 1st class part A and 2nd class part B, I would then have to sail 12 months as 2nd and could then challenge 1st class part B. It’s a heck of an opportunity. just landed home last night, had a shop beverage and bed. Travel days suck. Not sure what I’ll pick at today, don’t want to start much in case I leave soon… 3 Quote
Alan Dinan Posted January 4 Posted January 4 That does suck with the short notice, but sounds like a great opportunity for you!! 1 Quote

It doesn’t really matter. St. John’s is a 7hr drive to Sydney NS then a 12 hr ferry ride away so it’s not really any closer. Owen sound is about a 3 hr drive to sugar tits place so I could visit the odd weekend… I’d almost rather just go and get it done, have my 2nd class in September. 2 Quote
AngrySailor Posted January 4 Author Posted January 4 Piecing together this valve spring tester. Can mount the DRO bit in still waiting for the load cell and display. Pulled a spring to around 600lbs, getting to be a bit of a pull but I think it will test my 850lb springs no problem. Needs to be bolted to the bench for sure though… 5 Quote

I’ve heard about some of these industrial big blocks kicking around. Some run on LNG or even well gas. Those heads look odd, possibly vortec heads from the GM 8.1 (496) which is kinda a big block but it’s a bit of an orphan and doesn’t share many parts with the MK IV, gen 5&6 series. I think I seen some guys buying them surplus and putting aftermarket Mk VI heads on… if you can score them they’re 4.5” bore blocks I guess. got one AFR head mocked up and measured for pushrod lengths. Tomorrow last day home (Fug I’ve only been home 2 full days so far…). Got confirmation and im off to school leaving Wednesday morning. Friday will be my first day, classes started today though. I guess the course director is gonna let it slide for me. They’re hitting me with four classes right off… Sheiit. 5 Quote

I see a distributor a 8.1 was crank trigger coil on plug like a LS. Looks like a good class load enjoy the knowledge 1 Quote
