I’ve got a ‘52 8N Ford that we haven’t run in a while parked in front of the barn door with the boat inside rn. I cleaned the points yesterday and she fired up, the engine is whipped but always had good oil pressure. She had zero… pulled an oil line off the pressure port in the block and nothing, there’s oil in the sump so something went for a crap… 1 2 Quote

Ran a ground wire down each side so no lights use the trailer chassis as ground. Ran the wires inside PVC conduit and grommeted everywhere they pass through the frame. 9 Quote

Got the rotor timing real close, had to cut 0.009” off the shoulder of the non drive rotors gear, working on the teflon retaining screws now. Once the new Teflon is in and held I’ll double check the timing and should be ready for assembly. 4 Quote

I did something similar (dedicated ground wire) on my 20' goose neck when I built it. One problem though. I used 14 gauge wire for the ground, and I found when I stepped on the brakes (and sent current to the trailer brakes) that the ground wire got overloaded and made the LED marker lights go out. I had to chassis ground the brakes and and use a heavier ground wire in the whip for the plug and chassis ground that also. Interesting setup on the mill! A while back I asked if the blowers on Detroit 2 strokes had teflon seals. The answer was no. I got to thinking I suppose they really aren't needed there as the pressure increase across the blower is not very much compared to a performance application where intake pressure is considerably above atmospheric. 1 Quote
AngrySailor Posted August 9, 2025 Author Posted August 9, 2025 Yes, the brake ground must be capable of handling all the brake supply wires… no brakes on the boat trailer thankfully. Brakes and water don’t mix let alone salt water… that’s right about the Detroit blowers. They don’t really build much air box pressure, they’re technically a “scavenge blower”. Detroit blowers can be converted to automotive applications with no strips and they make aftermarket blowers with no strips like my BDS 8-71 stage II. Strips are really only needed for big boost builds. I wish the 14-71 didn’t have strips, they’re not required for the boost I want but the blower won’t work without them due to the grooves for them machined into the rotors. All the retaining screws drilled and tapped now. Restrip the rotors tomorrow and it’s ready to assemble, final check/adjustment on rotor timing and it’s a blower. That did take a little messing around to get set up. Was able to one rotor in one set up, angle the head to the helix, drill and tap each end then flip the rotor and do each end again for 12 holes, then angle the head opposite and do the same for the other rotor. 3 Quote

AngrySailor Posted August 10, 2025 Author Posted August 10, 2025 The exhaust valves are also opening and closing while the piston is down the cylinder (when the intake ports are uncovered), not trying to pull away from a rising piston like a 4 stroke. On the 598 the piston and exhaust valve get to within 0.110” of each other before the valve begins closing faster than the piston is rising. Still 8K on a two stroke Detroit is wild, effectively the same valve train speed as 16k on a 4 stroke! I bet the cam profile isn’t as aggressive as far as ramp rates and lift as a four stroke capable of that rpm which will reduce the spring load required also the Detroit valves are pretty small/light weight so that helps as well. I’d be worried about the valve bridges bouncing out of place if they float though. That’s what failed on the 12v149 that ran away on one ship I worked on. Quote
