AngrySailor Posted December 18, 2025 Author Posted December 18, 2025 So I’d like to have a valve spring bench tester for setting up big block heads. I could get by with using a more common 600lb tester and doing some math but it would be nice to read directly, I’m running over 800lbs open on the nasty stuff. The old RIMAC 600lbs testers are expensive used still and almost $1400 new (branded RIMAC but they’re hongkoidial knock offs), They’re also reading in 5lb increments. There’s a proform (China) tester for $830 but it’s 700lb capacity and has reviews stating repeatability and other issues. I don’t really need another project but I’m thinking about building one from an arbor press with a 1000lb load cell and a DRO which should be quite accurate. Total parts from crapazon is under $400… it’s still china stuff but I think I could tailor it to my needs… maaaan I need to sell some engines to fund this addiction… actually scored three BBC blocks for peanuts the other day. Two 454’s and a 396. Bare blocks one 454 was prepped 0.030” over but has surface rust. The others are std. might look into cost effective top end kits and put together a street friendly/muscle car build to have in stock with a for sale sign on it 3 Quote

We’re at the Goderich salt mine right now. They don’t have any salt… maybe we’re in the wrong place 🤣 who would possibly think you could get salt at a salt mine??? Here’s the junk liner we pulled out, sending it ashore for scrap. 4 Quote

They’re mining, processing and hoisting salt to the surface rn and loading us bit by bit. Also they load transport trucks here for road salt and as strange as it seems they take priority over the ships. Gotta rebuild an oil pump for the generator engines, might start that tonight. I already pressed in new bushings just gotta log the measurements and assemble for a spare now. 2 Quote

Gearclash Posted December 20, 2025 Posted December 20, 2025 I take it the main engine is a uniflow 2 stroke design? Seems like the inlet ports in the sleeve are quite low . . . 2 Quote
hardtail Posted December 20, 2025 Posted December 20, 2025 How's the weather out there, same as your handle? Quote

The ports are that low because the stroke is 8 feet… 36 minutes ago, hardtail said: How's the weather out there, same as your handle? Pretty nasty. AngrySailor Posted December 21, 2025 Author Posted December 21, 2025 Not sure what’s up lol. The bridge said ice but I’m upstairs after watch and the river is clear here. We dropped the anchor for some reason though. Not engine room related. Quote

AngrySailor Posted December 24, 2025 Author Posted December 24, 2025 Just got an email from the company… I applied for a scholarship to get my 2nd class Engineering license and was accepted 👌🏻 Not sure when I start but potentially early January. I’ll have to move half way across the country for 8 months. It’s gonna be crazy but well worthwhile. 6 1 Quote
