Buddy got a few of these issues, never seen these before.

Everything is relative, and they were quieter 54 years ago when they were new and the mice hadn't eaten all the padding and the seals hadn't all turned to dust.

Agree they were probably better when new and all of the padding was in place. I didn’t think Dad’s was that load when I ran it in the 80’s. More noise from the rear end than the engine.

So what was a quieter cab? Those or the Stolper/Hinson cabs used on the late JD 20 series and 6030/7020/7520.  Those cabs had padding all around the inside and around the steering console too.  Still rattled the ears out of your head.  I can’t image those Deluxe cabs were much different.

Honestly about the same I would give the edge to IH deluxe cab though. When new and all the upholstery and dust boots in place they were quieter than a JD stolper. The sound guard cab though came out a year after IH deluxe and that was the bettter cab. Other tractor makers were ahead of them though case cabs probably were the best then.

I have a deluxe cab on 1066 and it’s a great cab but it does hold the noise in.

I looked at the Neb tests was surprised to find they were testing decibels that far back on those cabs.  Here is what I found.  
 

4620 - 93

1066 - 88

6030 - 87

4620 noticeably louder but the 6030 equal

I was going to say about 5 decibels. The 7020 and 7520 jd were quieter than the 4320 from what I remember. But those cabs were not on transmission. They were mounted up and off bellhousing a bit.

That’s why I didn’t bother looking them up.  Wouldn’t have been a fair comparison.  And JD did point out the transmission behind the hinge made for a quieter cab vs everybody else

I replaced EVERYTHING on my 1566 for sound suppression.  Shift tower/fuel tank isolators, floor mat, pedal boots, console cover, the thingy under the seat.  Still wouldn't call it quiet, but definately quieter than hearing a DT hammering away on an open station with all the rest of the noise.  

Best comparison I have it's just a bit too loud to carry on a cell phone conversation easily.

Did you add any real sound deadening material, like Dynamat? We used to use that stuff ad nauseam in those rattly POS cars from the '80s & '90s for big stereo installs. Actually reduced the rattling outside the cars, which you could hear in the wipers, gas cap flaps & spoilers if they had one.

That would be a good assessment of the noise level in a Deluxe cab.

I thought about it, but passed because I think it would make it harder to clean out under the mat and it would trap moisture.  

Honestly when I know I'm going to run it awhile, I pop my noise canceling head gear on and put something on to listen to.

That's interesting. I hadn't thought about material breathe-ability & moisture trapping. I'll have to read up on that.

A 1566 is quieter than the others. The planetary rear doesn’t howl or make a whining noise like the rest.

This on the floor board and cowl area would have been night and day different. When you had the cowl covering and floor mat in place it was better. And factory muffler.

I noticed that when you keep the rpms below 2 grand or so its quieter.  When you let er eat it really gets a perfect level of driveline harmonics and gets considerably louder.  

Actually considered putting a blanket over the 3pt control one time, it seems that amplifies it.

Are those cabs pressurized? That might be part of the problem, if they're not.

We traded in a 7045 and 7060 Allis Chalmers on a new Ford 8830. Although narrow in the shoulder area, I was surprised how quiet they were. I think in creature comforts, IH lagged behind others by the time the early to mid 70's rolled around.

One thing you have to remember, They are not a Rolls Royce or Bentley 😀😀 I would believe that just about anything beats the begeebers out of sitting out in freezing or scorching weather😀. been there done that

An open tractor at +5C ( 41F ) with a stiff breeze is not too bad for the first hour, but it gets cold after 4 - 8 hours. That's one of the reasons even an old Meade cab was an improvement in those conditions. So the early factory cabs were appreciated, even if they weren't great.

The white cab was much tighter and kept more noise out but not enough to qualify as quiet. Doors were constructed of noticeably lighter grade steel on a red cab as they would rattle at the top even when new and they cheapened the steps and grab handles. Very disappointing when the brand spanking new BS 1066 arrived and you could see daylight out the top as the doors rattled. Used 1466 with a white version arrived the same year and the cab filter even purged a little dust when you shut the door at the end of a long day. It might be nit picky but IH even halved the number of rear reflectors on the red cab.🤮
