I was interested in the laptop the utility marker guy was using and noticed the a gas line crossing the 18” storm line we were going to install, he had missed it. We hand dug the line and found we had about 2” of clearance from the O.D. of the storm main. The excavator would have ripped right through it. I earned my pay that day. 6 Quote
JaredT Posted August 3 Posted August 3 There was a tile plow that hit a high pressure gas main about 5 years ago, near Sandusky MI. If I remember correctly it blew the track off of the tile plow and laid it on its side. Never heard much about it afterwards as to who made the mistake. Minor injuries is all I heard of. Quote
whweldit Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Got permission to have my welding students build a 16 x 32 lean to shed attached to our welding department. Knew there was a natural gas line that fed the school in area where we were going to dig holes for steel post. Called gas company to mark it. Had stakes and lines pulled for shed layout. Company shows up and marks line directly under where 2 post would be. Already had ordered the steel trusses Tell the gas guy well crap. He asked how deep were we going to dig? Told him around 20 inches because we were also pouring a concrete floor. Tells me no problem. Line was required to be no less than 36 inches. Ok. Found the line at 18 inches in first hole and 15 inches in 2nd. Put a flat plate on post and set them in hole and poured some concrete around them. About 6 months later they relocated the line. Chester5732 Posted August 3 Posted August 3 In 2017 I helped a friend take down an old building. The gas line was capped and the gas company said the line was retired. When the one wall came down it snapped the gas line. It was not retired. There was natural gas spewing in the air for over an hour before they arrived to cap it off. Darn lucky we didn’t blow up ourselves and half the town. 1 Quote

I was working in Ajo, AZ, as part of the contractor crew to bring the copper smelter back on line and living with a couple of the Phelps Dodge mine guys. One Friday night after I had left for Tucson, one of my room mates got up to use the bathroom and blew himself from inside the bathroom, across the tub and to the outside beside the house next door. He had third degree burns and had to be airlifted to the burn unit in Tucson. The other guy had a mild concussion from the roof falling on him. Only the studs of some of the interior wall were still standing, the outside walls were all laid down. The fault was found to be a leaking wall heater and a loose electrical terminal. Quote

I did my welding time at the Caterpillar franchise, some years prior to that....plus growing up with 'Imperial' so I have yet to embrace the 'foreign measurement ' system.....anything I make , is always imperial dimension.... Working in the huge tourist construction project in the Caribbean , back in 2003..for three years was great...all Imperial ....but the ''chippies'' from home were aghast a t the 'Imperial ' dimension requirements......I was just fine with them...!!! There are a lot of close calls from cars that have to get around no matter what. But it’s the truck drivers fault. 😔 Quote

Absolutely menacing on the roads. They have a semi so they're going to drive however they want. Passing up a blind hill in a no passing zone, turning onto the 2 lane highway with traffic coming toward them and just basically driving recklessly. Real truck drivers are no problem but these guys drive like nuts! Quote
