2023 crop pics

poor famer i was wondering about you when i seen that on the radar i wasnt exactly sure where your yard is but figure you were gonna get something, a little rain while i was gone and looks like more on the way so hoping to get some spraying in before the rain just wheat and barley left so shouldn't take to long 

 

just got back from a trip to Ontario for a few days seen some different country and toured a few different farms, interesting how they grow tomato's/tobacco and onions etc

It was cutting close to us that’s for sure. Yard was all dry by 9:00 this morning though.  
 

Still have 1 quarter of canola to do. Was going to do it today but the wind picked up to much. It’s liberty so I don’t want to spray in the evening either if I can help it. See what tomorrow brings I guess.

i drove around earlier today and i had the canola all sprayed before my trip, but i wanted to double check how good of a job i did this morning, thought everything looked good,  but same the wind picked up here to so i went rock picking and found about 30 acres i got a very poor kill on lots of kochia and buckwheat the grasses are dead but the broadleaf's are still alive and well for some reason, and i had already cleaned the sprayer out and loaded with wheat chem so i'll try to get a couple fields of wheat done then clean out and go back to canola for another pass over that area and back to wheat acres, getting close to start bolting here 

 

 

not sure why i got a poor job the only thing i can think of basically the 30 acres is a steep hill with some gully's in it and i have to keep a high boom and it was a bit windy so didn't get good coverage, as on the kochia you can see little burns on top leaves but rest looks healthy

Just the one quarter of canola now to do a second shot of liberty on. Should’ve had it done today but we went in for spray and the girl we deal with wasn’t there so she brought the chemical out tonight.  Got the rest of the first shot done this afternoon. Canola is looking not to bad now. Still needs to fill in some but it’s starting to leaf out now at least and actually grow.

Wheat spraying completed. Waiting on the Canola for first pass of Liberty. Hopefully weather cooperates at the beginning of next week and I can get it done

Well managed to finish up spraying today. Forecast didn’t sound great but it actually wasn’t a bad day for spraying. Sun was even out most of the time I sprayed. Kind of important for Liberty.  Day did t start out great though. I got a 160 ac batch of Liberty and leopard mixed up only to discover a leak on the chem pump. One of the plugs was leaking. Told myself and mom to just leave it alone as it would probably just leak worse if I tried to tighten it. Was leaking bad enough with the pump on I just couldn’t help myself I had to try. I literally touched it with a crescent wrench and it basically exploded. Right in my face too unfortunately. Got the valves shut and the sprayer shut down then rain into the house to wash off. Changed clothes and went back to the sprayer. Mom was holding her finger over the hole as it was still leaking even with the valves shut.  Found a plug in the shop and wrapped it heavily with Teflon tape. Managed to get it caught well enough to seal it up and empty the tank.  Have to tear it apart now and either replace the pump or rest I’ll the hole and tap it to 1/2” npt.  Had the same problem last year with another plug on the same pump. May be time to just replace it. 
 

Rainfall warning issued just to the south of us. Hoping it misses us.  Talking upwards of 3 inches in an area that’s already drowning out.

Well there’s always next year lol. Neighbour tilled his garden under. Half a dozen. Hills of potatoes, corn and cucumbers. None of it came hp so he abandoned ship lol.

Finally got into spraying canola with Liberty yesterday. Plenty of mud and water to drive through. Crop pretty good but further advanced than I normally spray it. Got a little more done today before quitting due to wind. More showers predicted tonight so guess i''ll be spraying in July.

we ended up with 3.3 inches of rain the other day so things are quite soggy around here, my 130 acre slough that was in barley is a loss i dont think even the edges will survive 

 

i will also be spraying in July about 300 acres left

I wondered if you were in that rain belt that went through. Saw some pics from further south and it didn’t look great. Down by smiley the roads were under water.  Hopefully get some sunshine to dry things out a bit.

Took off yesterday afternoon for a while and went quadding.  Figured I better do something for Canada day long weekend lol.  Was a nice day anyways. Little bit of rain here last night again. Just enough to freshen things up and settle the dust again. Was actually just saying we should haul some

water for the strawberries in the garden. They’re growing wild this year and blooming like crazy so hopefully there’s a good crop coming lol.

I don’t think the truck was there when the bush burnt a few years ago. Assuming it got dumped there after the fire and lit up. Stolen truck is my guess.  Waste of a 5.9 Cummins anyways.

Like the saw on the front rack, never know when one will have to clear the trail! Need to get my 4-wheeler out and get the sprayer tank loaded up. One of these days, need to adjust the carb on that thing. Running just lean enough to be a headache.

It’s handy to have at times for sure. Something I’ve always had in the back of my head is what if I get down one of these backwoods trails where the bush is real thick and a tree falls behind me. Nice to know I have a way to get out if something like that were to happen.  Some of these trails were 10-15 miles away from the truck and back where virtually no one travels so I try to be extra careful lol.

Been seeing quite a few tassels in the corn here. Decided to walk down and see if mine was. It is, not a real high percentage but they are coming.

Down to my last 60 acres of canola to spray and got hit this afternoon with hail and thunderstorm. Ground was white with hail and it was still in my truck box when I got home. Probably be a little damage. Crop was looking not too bad having recovered from flea beetle damage.

That’s not good. Hasn’t been much for hail around here yet thankfully. Few areas in that storm last week but nothing right close to home. Hopefully you don’t have to respray anything and the weather cooperates so you can get wrapped up.

Crops are progressing here but still behind unfortunately. Wheat and barley should be heading out within the week. Barley by the end of the week even if we’re lucky.  Stuff on the sand looks like it’s lacking n where it’s pure sand. If I knew it was going to keep raining I’d be tempted to go too dress it. It’s a pretty big crap shoot there though.  Canola is starting to cover the ground now finally. Hopefully starts to bloom within the week.  One field has a bunch of volunteer canola coming on it from 2 years ago. It looks a little rough right now but should blend in hopefully in a little bit.

finished crop spraying yesterday, still quite greasy out there just about sunk it once or twice but its done, sounds like hot weather is finally coming, my cereals are a little behind but canola is a tad ahead most turning yellow already 

 

roosty that sucks about the hail, i put insurance on yesterday as it saved my bacon last year getting 100% loss on some

so now insurances on and crop sprayed kind of take the easy life for a bit, hoping to maybe make it to Yorkton to the western development museum then i can say ive been to them all other than that get some grain hauled out and tinker at getting things ready for harvest

Went to a friend of mine's place yesterday for the fourth. First thing I notice is his beans. Holy-crap, they are like twice as big as anyone else's. Think he said he planted them April 12th. That's a full month before I got mine in.
