New Englander Posted August 31 Posted August 31 This kid kid runs from police crashes fence and tears wing off a PC12. News story says small plane but the small plane is a PC12 worth anywhere from 2 to 6 million depending on age and hours. https://www.facebook.com/manchesterinformation/posts/daytime-photos-of-the-plane-damaged-during-a-high-speed-pursuit-onto-the-tarmac-/1551013860375499/ Quote
vtfireman85 Posted August 31 Posted August 31 I don’t think the liability minimums were calculated to include airplane crashes.. 1 1 Quote
jeeper61 Posted August 31 Posted August 31 Do planes have uninsured/underinsured insurance policies? Quote
766 Man Posted August 31 Posted August 31 Hopefully, they throw the book at the kid but I have my doubts on that. Quote
TomH Posted August 31 Posted August 31 I've flown on a PC 12. I think the list of charges almost sounds minor for what the damage entails. If he had an average insurance policy it won't come anywhere near to covering the aircraft. If he only had state minimum he is only covered for 50,000$ Quote
Mudfly Posted August 31 Posted August 31 Never been in this circumstance, but will insurance cover anything related to an event that occurred while running from the cops? Or if you were proven to be intoxicated? Seems like those would be really good reasons to deny coverage. 1 Quote
yellowrosefarm Posted August 31 Posted August 31 Would they try to repair that or just total loss? Quote

Don't worry the kid's trial lawyer attorney will sue for any and every reason imaginable to offset the damage the kid created. Insufficient fencing. Plane parked too close to fence. Safety buffer required between plane and property line. No warning lights to warn people away from plane. No tire blowout strip to prevent advancement by vehicle on to airport. And so on and so on. 2 1 Quote

Anyway, the PC 12 is one of Plane Sense’s and they likely have it covered. Just to drive to my Tee hangar we need one million coverage and the PDA, or airport authority, named on the policy. I got rear-ended and the first thing out of the other driver ’s mouth when I asked her if she was okay was “I don’t have insurance” . My coverage paid for a new rear bumper, her car was totaled plus my insurance company would likely surrogate and she’d loose her license. Anyway, the drunken kid is only 17 and may skate if not charged as an adult. Story is he crashed the gate at the FBO at 120 mph! Quote

Actually, most of those have chain link fencing that could be easily breached by a 120 mph Mustang. This kid had a half dozen cops on his tail. When the airport was an active military base with nuclear bombers he’d have died in a hail of gunfire. Now is ANG tankers and civil field combined. FIL was police until he found an opportunity to train and change MOS to aircraft mechanic on the B47 and B52s. Quote

Arizona did not used to require an insurance policy if you could post a $10,000? bond. But that was also three decades ago when a dollar went further……. 1 Quote

I think uninsured/underinsured is required everywhere. I've used it as I was rear ended hard and the driver of the other vehicle decided they didn't need to stick around even though they destroyed their radiator (assuming not here legally). The state patrol that came to write up the accident report was kind of surprised he didn't find the other vehicle within a mile with the several gallons of coolant on the ground at the accident site. Either way, the accident report was written up in my favor since I was rear ended while driving on an open 4 lane highway with little traffic and I actually stopped. This was over 15 years ago and even then it was $7000 in damage. 1 Quote

Here in the "Live Free or Die" state there is NO requirement for any auto insurance. I guess it's OK for someone living up near the Canadian border who doesn't drive very far but overall it's crazy. Drivers are supposed to be able to prove financial responsibility but that doesn't stop you from registering a car and police don't ask for proof of insurance if stopped for a minor traffic violation as in other states. If you cause a crash you have responsibility to pay and will likely to be sued and loose driving privilege. I guess those living in a dilapidated trailer in the woods with meth teeth don't care. Those with enough money to be financially responsible buy insurance. It's all strange. Quote

I assume that it goes back to the horse and buggy days, the poor need to get groceries with or without insurance, so the Government just looks the other way for some people. Forcing people to purchase insurance is socialism, you are in a free state Quote

I suspect but don't know if our uninsured motorist cost is higher due to no compulsory requirement. Doesn't matter as i need it anyway. I have an umbrella policy simply because of all the ambulance chasers. All of the lawyers promising that "you may deserve compensation" simply drives up costs as insurers weigh the cost of fighting v settling. Quote

This is a concept that a sizable portion of the population does not understand. They think that the companies eat unanticipated costs but the truth is each and every time those costs are passed to the consumer so the profit margin remains constant. 1 1 Quote
