DirtBoyz07 Posted May 24 Posted May 24 We Iโm sad to announce that Petey has to have emergency surgery do to a failed heart and as of right now on life support ๐ณ Not to worry the new heart has been completely rebuild with all OEM parts ย and will be going in this week and is going to have a completely rebuilt Caterpillar 3406 B model straight out of California ๐ The series 60 was a good one and was over 900,000 miles and gave up the ship 2 miles from my shop while hauling the D 6 to the neighbors for some waterway repair . Our neighbor loaned me his 9130 Steiger to pull it home / with out the dozer . It was running just like it has since I got it 16 years ago , I was only going 30 mph on the gravel and started down a big hill and was shifting up a gear when she decided today is the day and Iโm done . I have never heard a motor every pound and shake like this ever , Iโm going to have to remove the pan to see what actually happened , Iโm guessing the 2 piece piston broke and the rod busted the sleeve because the water light came on immediately. I had to use my blow gun to get the parts out of the quick drain plug so the oil would run out ๐ณ๐ณ 10 1 2 Quote
Sledgehammer Posted May 24 Posted May 24 Sorry for the hassle but the new heart should really be nice. I'm sure Petey will be back in action in no time.ย 1 Quote
acem Posted May 24 Posted May 24 Good luck on getting her back together. Those Detroits were really good engines. 1 Quote
Cool1566 Posted May 24 Posted May 24 Kinda like itโs getting a โBionicโ heart. Ought to be sweet and sound even sweeter! 1 Quote
Sask466 Posted May 24 Posted May 24 Old Peteโs and Catโs pair together nice; they are meant to be together. You canโt go wrong with that combo. ย B modelโs sound so good and have awesome low end power. I think the 60 series is an underrated engine that doesnโt get wide-enough love - they sipped fuel compared to Cats of that era - not that fuel is concern for your application. ย Some of the early 60 series had a weird connecting rod set up - the small end bolts to the wrist pin. ย It must have been problematic as they went to a normal connecting rod later.ย 3 Quote

I myself would prefer the Detroit , only thing is the electronics are getting old now on those early 12.7s. ย When Detroit pushed them to 14 liters they were a 500 or more hp factory engine. ย 1 Quote

Other people can get a lot better mileage than me, and I canโt stay with a Cat in a long hard pull, but I CAN haul 2000 pounds more legally, out run most on the top end, and REALLY aggravate the true blooded Cat people! If I ever overhaul this motor, it will get the 14 liter liners, cam and a serious tune. THEN I will be able to eat Kittyโs.ย 1 Quote

A farmer I did a lot of work for was just getting into diesel trucks around 1995 and later. The had a freightliner 112 , and 2 120s. One was semi tractor with a cat and the other was a semi made into box truck with a Detroit. After having the Detroit he bought 3 or more cascadia day cabs with 500 hp Detroits he loved them. Back around 2000 he was paying 25,000 for the Detroit trucks they were bringing about 10,000 dollars more than the c13 and smaller Cummins that were in fleet trucks out of same fleets. another buddy has a 11.1 liter in an older Volvo. He ran that truck into southern Minnesota and other areas picking up tractors he bought. He loved the fuel mileage it made and I hauled grain with it one winter for myself it was actually not bad on short haul power. Quote
DirtBoyz07 Posted May 25 Author Posted May 25 I donโt have anything bad to say about the Detroit , it has given me 16 years of service , it had a rear seal leaking and a fair amount of blow by but itโs never got any worse so the few mikes that get put on a year hauling my dozer around the area , no winter operation I wasnโt going to mess with it for the time being . Iโm Cat guy and and I know that someday when Petey goes to the next owner it will bring way more with a new Cat .ย โWhen I drove it home from West Sacramento California in 2010 I got 7 mpg and running around hauling dozer and tractors it run 5 mpg and thatโs what most big trucks I have ever drove . Iโm sure it will be a bit of a change going from that 12.7 to that 14.6 liter . I will let you guys know when itโs in and running . Danny 6 Quote

Both were geared the same and same transmission. My cousin was following Gary, both empty, running in the hills of Missouri on 44. My cousin told Gary to step on it, he wanted to get back to St. Louis. Gary said that he had it on the floor. Cousin said that was all he needed to hear. He dropped a gear and blew around Gary and left him sit. Gary made it back to St. Louis and pulled into the Cat dealer and told them to make it run like a Cummins! Quote
Bermuda_Ken Posted May 26 Posted May 26 When you go to truck shows....you will need to wear this new shirt......(Mack guys love this!!!!)ย 3 Quote
Lazy WP Posted May 26 Posted May 26 Honestly most of the more modern engines are pretty good. The ISX Cummins has kinda been a letdown. Very few making it beyond 700,000 miles, where the older red top n14 was usually a million mile motor.ย I want an old B model, but after driving a 9070 home yesterday with no cruise control, maybe not.ย Quote
DirtBoyz07 Posted May 27 Author Posted May 27 Ken thatโs a good one ๐๐๐ I will ad an aftermarket cruise control to mine when Iโm done , I very seldom use it . Most of my running is around home so no need for it , hope to have it installed by the end of the week if everything goes good . Danny ย 4 Quote
DirtBoyz07 Posted May 30 Author Posted May 30 Well I finally won , the Old Detroit is out and ready for burial , just waiting on my flywheel from the machine shop and the new yellow motor is ready . Itโs nice I just have to switch the motor mounts out of the donor ๐ Danny 8 Quote
