2023 crop pics

finally got the canola done just i time for a thunder shower to roll through, crazy hot here last few days standing on top of cart loading the sweat just pours off ya, looks like few days of rain coming i still got approx 500 of wheat left to go 

 

few break downs the belts that drive the fan on the cart shredded themselves, the bottom radiator hose on the water truck sprung a leak cobbled a hose together to get it going and today i loaded the cart went to fire the fan all the sudden only half the hydraulic capacity found pioneer tips failed   just been 1 thing after this other this year although early crops coming up look good

Down to 2 quarters of canola here now. Have some test plots to seed tomorrow hopefully and then hopefully go hard on the last bit. Things have been going ok here considering. My own health has been the biggest obstacle aside from the wet conditions. Just nicely getting g over a nasty cold now and today I came down with an abscessed tooth. Cheek was a wee bit puffy this morning when I left home to go harrow. Got back tonight at 5:00 and it looked like a grapefruit on my cheek almost 😢.  Went into an emergency dental clinic tonight and got some antibiotics for it. Looking at either a root canal or just pulling it. Fun times either way 😢. 
 

First wheat I seeded is showing up in rows now. Been so busy trying to catch h up I haven’t even been able to get out and enjoy the sights. U seem to be a day or two behind all spring. Still have a bit of spraying to do before the crop comes up as well.

Sounds just like my luck. This has been one of the worst yet for late starts, bad weather, breakdowns and just holdups in general. Only one day this past week I broke the hundred acre mark. Water pump gave out on the Magnum and lost a day. Feed cllutch on the air seeder keeps intermittently disconnecting so there will be a few gaps. Plugged manifold hose will cause a few more. Fertilizer bin is getting far lower than my calculations say it should be. Not sure what went on there as I figured I should have more than I need to finish. And the raging incessant wind is driving me insane. No early crops on my farm. Down to the last 150 acres. Hopefully I will survive it. 

And to top it all "Bunge" is harrassing us to get a grain contract filled right now! No consideration that seeding time might be the busiest time of year, plus our trucker is also busy seeding his own crop. My SIL found a new trucker and my brother and nephew are taking a day off to try and get that job done so I can continue seeding. Now it looks like rain might shut that down. :0(

I should’ve been done 2 days ago but the coop has been having problems filling me with nh3. They blame it on the trucks delivering to the bullets but I don’t know for sure. The one day their own trailer was piled up so that didn’t help. I called in today at about 2:00 and told them I needed another 20% to finish. Said I’m not sure if we can get to you tonight or not. Called back at 7:00 when I ran out and sure enough no go till morning. Kind of made me made.  
 

Most everything had been hanging in there this spring. My ac gave out on me in the versatile a day ago though. The bracket holding the compressor cracked off. I had to pull it off so it wouldn’t hit the fan and take out the rad.  Been fighting with plugged runs.  Few lumps in the last bit of dry fert is screwing things ip a bit. Have to stop ever 10-15 acres and check.  Swelling in n my cheek has gone back down. Have to make an appointment once things settle down a wee bit.  I did get stuck last night for the first time. Was trying to empty the tank so they could fill it first thing this morning. Went into a low spot I’d harrowed through and sure enough I lost traction. Didn’t sink down to bad but I couldn’t move regardless.  Mom came and helped me pull it out this morning with the John Deere.  Which reminds me we left it in the field. Should’ve had it back home but hopefully it’ll be ok. It’s not close to the road at all but still.

Well we finished up yesterday morning.  Ran in with some left over canola seed and picked up some Roundup to spray the canola I’d just seeded. Got that done today. Was kind oF misting but said screw it and went anyways. Never actually rained but it was there. Late afternoon it quit.  Went up to the well at 6:00 this morning for a tank of water. Was actually kind of foggy then.

Well few little set backs but nothing to major so far thankfully. And even better no stucks “yet”.  Home quarter is done for now. Hopefully it dries up a bit more and I can get back into a few more places. Had to leave the old pasture east of the house and some sloughs in the field. Wasn’t horrible but it’s sure wet underneath yet.  Winston was helping me check seed depth the first night out lol.

Old girl did good again. An upgrade would be nice but this tractor will never leave the farm regardless I don’t think.

Yes they just work and work don’t they. A little maintenance like wheel seals and pivot bushings they run forever.

There was no cheaper way to farm then with a Versatile black hood Constant Powe series.  I F’ed up about 15 years ago when our old 950 which we bought new in 79’ came up for sale at my dealer inventory reduction auction.  Only went for $5,000 and it was in good shape.  I should have bought it or at least tried.  Best tractor we ever had.  I like my Steiger.  I like my Big Bud.  But it was Versatile that set the trend for 4 wheel drive tractors.  Even the Steiger brothers had to pull a page out of the Versatile playbook back in the day.

I don't know much about the Versatile four wheelers  but am surprised how many of them are still in service in my part of Sask. Some of the newer ones too.

I'm not. This area was almost azzhole deep in Versatiles.   My IH dealer sold the crap out of them.  There are still a few around but they have kinda gone by the wayside here because they've outlived their usefulness.  They just can't pull these modern day air drills and don't have enough power to pull these high speed tools like heavy harrows/pro tills and are inconvenient for grain cart duty.  But I do have a friend along with his son who have got started in farming the past a few years ago.  Bought some cheap land nobody wanted and seeded their first crop with a JD 720 and 10ft drill.  They have expanded since then and bought two Versatile 875s on the cheap.  Told them that was probably the best tractor they could buy to start farming with

not to many older versatiles left here most been retired, few newer ones but many steiger and Deeres dominate the market here 

 

about 240 acres left to seed here got it all sprayed this afternoon will try seeding tomorrow should go ok i think, hired neighbor to roll my peas i just don't have the time between seeding and in crop spray time, i like to give them time to bounce back after rolling i'll be going seeding into in crop pretty quick, looks good here thou

First seeded wheat is looking not to bad. Haven’t been around to look at the other fields but they shouldn’t be to far behind. Canola is just starting to poke its way out of the ground now. Bee a few days yet before you can really see rows.  Garden is making its way out of the ground as well. Should be enough to get us through another winter hopefully.

@db1486 @midnightman how’d you guys fair in the storm yesterday. Hopefully you missed the worst of it. Looked like it was in your general area though unfortunately.  Saw some videos in the swan valley area this morning of water running over the roads again from the rain.

Took some crop pics in Switzerland, the barley is already ripening nicely very likely they will combine it in two three weeks, and the winter rapeseed or winter canola had pods filling

Definitely a jump start on us lol. Neighbor was over in Sweden the end of April and he sent me videos of the canola blooming then. Meanwhile I was snowmobiling here lol.  
 

local seed grower uses a stripper header to harvest the grass seed that they do.  Not positive but I think they cut and bale it after it’s harvested as well.

Tornado on the ground tonight near oxbow. Sire a lot of nasty stuff floating around in the south the last couple days. Sure hope we don’t see any of it up here. Sounds like one farm yard got tore up pretty bad. Hopefully no one was injured at least. 
 

On a happier note I did a crop tour today of all the fields.  Canola is looking a little thin yet but it’s only been a week more or less. I can see rows just not all of them yet. Wheat and oats are looking good though. Even on the sand it’s trying to push through. Very pale and yellow yet where it’s pure sand but at least it came up.  If we keep getting light showers there may be hope for it yet.  Likely have to start spraying in crop next week. Wheat is shooting up already. Stuff on the reserve actually looks better than at home.

I wonder what it’s like for wild oats over there.  There was an old story here that one of the old timers that came here from Sweden or one of the nearby countries brought the oats over with him that were supposed to grow well. Apparently grew a little to well. Ole boe was the name I belive. Likely just an old story but it’s been told many times here lol.  Wild oats are still thriving

We have been having tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings going off on the daily here for the past week. Really haven't got much out of anything. We finally got out first rain at home on Sunday night. Just about a inch and a half. Then another half inch 2 days ago. We are still dry here, but don't have to go far west and they had trouble finishing seeding because of rain every day for the last 2 weeks. We wrapped up June 1 and only had 1 day down because of rain where we were seeding. The west part of the province sure has been getting hit hard with every storm from the end of March till now. Heard on the radio seeding progress is about the lowest it's been in alot of years right now for MB

I sprayed corn today. It has been really wet here with some pretty bad weather lately. Most crops look good if they haven’t been under water.

Glad to hear you guys are doing alright at least. Been following on Facebook and it looks pretty debating to the west alright.  It’s been many yeaes since I was out to swan river so I don’t remember the lay of the land very well. Don’t think I’ve ever been to minitonas.

buddy's been send videos of down there he says he's been ok rain wise just on the edge of the massive rain but still flooding in parts 

 

bit of rain here over last few days got the peas sprayed just been windy cool days here hopefully get cracking on wheat here in day or 2 havent decided on 5 or 10 gallon an acre rate yet, did some burn off at 10 and was happy with results just dont like the constant filling

Was in Northwest Switzerland the day before yesterday and yesterday too, and took a Pic or a few of a nice Spelt (once called Korn cause it was once the most important cereal for breadmaking in Switzerland and in other parts as well) it was something between 4 and 5 feet tall give and take a few inches
