2023 crop pics

Start spraying bugs tomorrow if the weather cooperates. Found some army worms in my canola on the reserve so going to do it for sure.  The rest is debatable yet. Calling for rain tomorrow is the trouble. Kind of the last thing we need right now.  Diamond backs on another quarter at least along the road. It was getting dark so I didn’t scout the whole field.

Rained early this morning again but shortly after lunch I was able to get going on spraying. Got the reserve done and our north quarter. Probably hop in the sprayer tomorrow and drive around the rest of the fields to have a look. I had to stop once today to rotate a nozzle body and there was quite a bit of damage on the top of the plants there. Glad I got it done anyways.  It’s crazy how wet our north quarter is compared to the rest of the few spots I actually went around today ad I was concerned about getting stuck in them. This one in particular was fine but I was working on a curve and of course my pass ended up in the middle of it. That’s on nearly pure sand so you know it’s wet when there’s that much water laying there.  Could see the worms crawling in the front of the sprayer when I got home.  2017 was the last time we had to spray so I guess we had a good run.

Took the sprayer and went field scouting with it this morning so I could get out into the middle of the field easier. No dang way I’m walking that far through that tangled mess to Check for worms lol.  Found enough to be of concern so we headed in for more spray. Almost got to be an expensive trip in. Met a cruiser and he immediately threw the lights on. Was speeding a  little bit too much but got off with a warning at least. First time in 25 years I’ve been stopped so he maybe took pity on me lol. Asked me where I was going and I said I was heading into town to get more chemical so I could go spraying for army worms and I was trying to beat the rain. Was heavy overcast at the time.

haha ya them highway patrol always seem to sneak up on a guy i got pulled over a while back cruising a tad fast he ask what was the hurry and i was speechless........... just driving i said and he knocked it down abit but still got a ticket oh well paid my dues i guess

 

started spraying peas out today.. havent seen much for worms in canola yet but in a couple days ill be kncking some down as it coming in quick

Tallest stalks placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at our county fair and had 1st and 2nd for the 3 stalk combination.

However we haven’t had much rain so crops need some rain.

Been swathing canola the past  5 days and have not seen any worms or water in the field. Crop not too bad. Ripened pretty fast in the hot days this week. About 2/3 done.

started cutting canola yesterday, not a bad crop out there i'm finding,  no worms i seen but flea beetles are there but usually are every year 

 

feels odd being the only one swathing canola but whatever

I almost went out and opened up a couple of wheat fields this morning just to get a better look. Went out with the quad first though and decided to hold off a wee bit yet. Think I’ll spray tomorrow or Monday on the one field. Hopefully swath some of the rest sooner then later. 5 day forecast looked somewhat promising so it’s awful tempting.  These pics are a couple days old now.  Still a bit of green in some spots. Girl I buy my chem from said she’d send it if it all looked like this. Still a bit hesitant though. 
 

missed that miserable storm that went through a few nights ago thankfully. It looked pretty bad for a bit there. Brothers place at  neuanlage got hammered pretty bad. All the siding is shot on the north and west side for sure. Suspect his enclosed snowmobile trailer will be a write off as well. Neighbors camper almost had holes all the way through it.  Pile of damage in that area. Blew down a couple big shops/sheds and some grain bins too I heard.

Day started out pretty good but then went south at about 2:00. Went out swathing for the first time this year and got about 20 minutes in before the knife quit moving. Got out and found the lower pivot had snapped.  Drove back home tore it apart and went for parts. Spent the last few hours getting it back together. Combination of things caused it I think. Table isn’t 100% true and with the new guards there was a few spots running pretty tight. One bolt that broke off was loose so that might have been the main cause of it all. Other one broke off further inside. It beat up the lower part of the knife drove so I got it new as well. Try and keep everything tight. Been going through now trying to straighten everything out as I push the knife back in again. Slow going but we’re making headway At least.  700 bucks sure don’t buy much for parts anymore though.

ah yes poor farmer warning i was given was to keep them bolts tight, i put lock tight on mine and torque them to spec never had an issue, those bearing are stupid expensive, i think i used to over grease them and they would go all the time now i dont grease it as often and have no problem 

 

getting closer to rolling, i had the dealer install a new reverser clutch in my macdon, now were having issues getting the finger timed again, hopefully get it resolved soon, to dang warm out to be wrenching on this

@wheatking I don’t know how combine works does it. Thats an unreal markup at our local dealers. Think the bearing support was 330. Can’t even buy the bearing here for 70 bucks.

Got about 70 acres of wheat swathed today. Quit at 2:00 as I wasn’t sure I should put it all down in that field. I’ve got enough down to keep me going on the combine for a day or two anyways probably so if the weather cooperates maybe I can get some off in a couple more days.  Thundershower narrowly missed us tonight. Pretty sure I got some on the reserve. It’s all canola so as long as it didn’t hail it won’t hurt much at least.

Well officially started combining today. Took a sample around 4:30 not really hanging high expectations. Test we did said 13 or so. Hard to compensate for the high tempts. Still a few green ones but not many thankfully.  Monkeyed around getting the combine set. Finally ended up pulling out the back small wire and putting in a wide wire as it was throwing over to much.  Fairly heavy crop. Can’t make it the half mile down and back on a ~28’ swath. 
 

Have to spray a bit of canola in the morning then shuffle a bit of grain around maybe and then hopefully go back at it again.

been rolling on peas here last few days yeilding very well just wish they were actually worth something more than $6 bucks a bushel

 

should wrap up peas today and maybe try picking up canola tommorow im sure its dry but curious what the green count is like we havent had much for moisture or dew to wash that out

  Are the peas canned or frozen?  I assume that they do not go as dry edible.

What kind of peas?  Yellows are worth $5.25 here but I was able to squeeze out $9.50 for greens.

these are yellow peas have heard of slightly higher bids but generally 6 bucks is the best, unreal i dont think i ve ever sold peas this cheap

 

these peas usually get exported and used as a protein source in dog food etc

We started chopping corn silage a few days ago. I have seen a few fields of corn that have been picked. We don't have any corn that will be picked for a few weeks at best.

Got a little more wheat combined since I last posted. Swather a little bit of canola and sprayed most of the rest. Still have 240 acres left that I have to decide what I’m going to do with it. Still some green in it. Home quarter is borderline ready for swathing but likely needs a few more hot days yet which seem to be gone for now unfortunately. Had to run to Saskatoon last sat for parts. Idler pulley on the straw spreader went and the tensioner pulley bearing was getting loose. 
 

Raining here today now. Started last night about 9:00. I combined till 9:30 or so and called it quits. Was starting to get tough at that point.  Ordered another bin as my calculations on what we needed for storage were way out to lunch.  Guess that’s a good thing but I was hoping To not have to buy another bin this year. Wanted to put that money into a pickup truck find lol.

Another fertilizer bin would’ve been nice but I settled for another westeel 1805 grain bin from the local coop. They always build some over the summer in hopes of selling them come fall. They wanted to build them on farm this year but I wouldn’t commit to one till I kind of knew what was coming in off the field.  Surprisingly came down in price 2,000 bucks from the one we got last year.  Still hurts though a little. Hopefully done buying bins for a while now though. That’s 3 within the last year.  
 

Keeping my eyes peeled for something different for a pickup truck. See what happens after harvest. Good chance I’ll still be driving my duramax for a while but you never know. Alberta is still on my watch list though so you they might get some more money out of us yet lol.

Honestly not sure what I want. Curious to test drive one of the newer gm’s one of these days.  All the new trucks the seats seem so hard/stiff to me. Mines kind of like a couch recliner. Much softer. Even the kenworth has nicer seats imho lol.

Well the cereals are all done finally. Technically still 2-3 acres of wheat I guess left that I cut out on the last field when straight cut it. Not sure if I’ll start on canola today or not. Go take a look and see what it looks like this morning I guess.  Was actually kind of hoping it would rain today so I could take a breather lol.
