I appreciate all the work that goes in to making these roundups possible.

The issue I have with people pulling out Saturday is that it's advertised to include Saturday as a show day.  If people don't want to be there, fine, but dont present and advertise it to be this awesome, spectacular 3 day show when the last day is really only 2/3-3/4-7/8 of the exhibits.

You cant be upset about people complaining about Saturday's lacking in pizzazz after seeing all the pictures and showing up and not seeing what they came to see because the schedule is presented as Saturday is another normal day.

If they showed up Sunday and only saw 4 tractors that someone has to come back and get, that's on them because it is not advertised as a show day.

Our fair has the same challenge.  Wed, Thurs, and Fri.  Get your exhibits after 9pm. We moved that up from 10pm a couple years ago.  Not 730, not 845, you are not removing things before 9pm. You start taking exhibits away early, then you lose visitors, who don't buy food, then eventually exhibitors don't come back from lack of crowds.

We don't have Saturday as a fair day because we don't want to have clean up on Sunday.

From Roundups side, it's hard to "punish" people who want to pull out early, but it does make a noticeable difference in the quality of the show of the 3 I've been at.

You guys in the midwest with roundups within a 6 hour drive are blessed.

Pennsylvania guys do not make out bad over the course of several years running.  There is either a RPRU in Pennsylvania or Ohio and sometimes both.  Six hours would be on the long side.  For me to go to Bloomsburg, PA would take around 5 hours from driveway to driveway.  I'd like one in my home state of NY but due to issues such as labor it is quite unlikely we will have one.  As to shows it is hard to escape the stubborn factor or bully factor when it comes to exhibitors.  But sometimes exhibitors are caught between two shows and have to spread the load out as best as possible so they can meet their financial goals which have become much more difficult in recent years.

We make it to most of the Round Ups. It’s not always easy. It’s all about having your priorities in order. If your situation doesn’t allow for you to take off work and travel to a Round Up, you probably have your priorities right and I respect that. Some people take nice vacations and probably shouldn’t because of their situation but they go on the cruise anyway. It’s all about deciding what is important to you and finding a way to make it happen.
As for folks complaining about there not being anything to do on Saturday it’s BS. Since it’s the last day and you know people will be leaving, get there early and you will still have plenty to do. If you wait until noon on the last day to get there then that’s on you. Get your but out of bed and move!  We left about 1:00 yesterday. The parade was going on and looked like it was well attended. We had about 15+ hours on the road to get home and a job waiting on my return Monday morning. No rest for the wicked they say. If we were closer I could have stayed longer. As it is we’re still going down the highway and hope to be home this evening.
My wife and I bring our chapter’s merchandise and set up and sell to raise money for the chapter scholarship program. As such I don’t really get to enjoy the show like most of you guys. It’s work with little time to get to look at the exhibits. But like I said it’s about getting your priorities straight. Raising money for the kids is important to us so that’s what we do and I don’t bellyache about not getting a chance to see every tractor. I am happy to see the ones I do get to see.

If ever there was a "good" consequence from Covid, it was the fact that the RPRU 2020 in Huron had to switch from the usual Thursday-Saturday format to a Saturday/Sunday/Monday format due to the rescheduling of the show. That Saturday was PACKED at the fairgrounds.....and nobody was leaving to go home early. I've commented to other people that maybe the format should change to what was done in 2020, but I doubt it will ever be looked at. Granted, there were a lot of people there that were just happy to get outdoors and get to see people since we had been more or less confined to our homes for nearly 6 months at that time. I'm guessing 1/4 to 1/3 of the people there that Saturday had very little, if any, affiliation to IH.

Since Monday was the last day of the event, many left early...and nobody said a word about it.

Our biggest car show runs from Friday through Sunday in Mandan ND. The biggest day is Sunday with about 500 cars displayed plus vendors and other attractions. Sunday usually draws around 40,000 people and the car show runs from 11 am to 4 pm. I get that RPRU is a different animal but to me it seems that if Saturday was a full day event attendance would increase. If Buggies and Blues ran Thursday and Friday with exhibitors pulling out on Saturday afternoon I bet the attendance would be cut at least in half.

Really good point. Same amount of days, just different start and end days.

I assume so. They were the only one left after the Southern group couldn’t get a contract negotiated that would work.

same amount of days but people who work monday through friday would have to take off friday and a monday. I really dont know anyone who wants to do that. Most people who haul stuff need a couple days prior and post event to load, drive, then drive back and unload. I leave on saturday because I like to air on the side of caution as far as travelling in case of breakdowns or something else. Most times by the time i get home on saturday Im spent so that means unloading and getting everything put away on sunday and maybe get the afternoon to try and relax before going to work on monday. I figure that event dates are posted 3 years in advance so you got time to take vacation to be there the days the show is running. If you dont, then that just means your lazy and just wanna complain about what others do

I guess I don't see the difference between taking a Thursday and Friday off of work as opposed to a Friday and a Monday. Still 2 days off. I just think Saturday would be a HUGE day if it was a full day event.  I would think that it would draw more of the general public and more casual tractor enthusiasts that would make a day of it as opposed to taking time off of work, which the non-hardcore person isn't going to do. Or is that the intent? To keep it for the hard core enthusiasts that make this show the highlight of their year?

A Friday might fall in one block for an employer and Monday being in another block in terms of scheduling a replacement for the person seeking time off.  This issue had been raised at places I worked for in the past.  A lot of my schedules were Sunday through Saturday.  If a person is scheduled for the Sunday following the event that does not give much time to get home and rest on Saturday.  For many people there is no such thing as Monday through Friday 9-5 for a work week.

Guess you can't make everyone happy! My workweek has always been Monday through either Friday or Saturday, depending on the week, from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Missed it when it came to Tenn several years ago.  Then just knew when Montgomery al got it I would see one.  Live 2 1/2 hours from it.  As luck would have it, did not get to go.  Good friend could only go on Saturday.  Said he met more tractors on the drive down than he could count.  Said it was a big let down when he got there.  One of these days maybe it will get back close.  I understand the distance many travel to bring items.  Just seems like there should be someway to keep most of them there until Saturday noon anyway.

You can’t force people to do something they don’t want to do or can’t do for some reason.

Most of the tractors ARE there until noon at least. A FEW do leave on Friday evening or Saturday morning but most are still there.

As for taking off days in two different weeks, it can be an issue with employers scheduling. At best you loose any overtime you worked the other 4 days of the week. For example if you work 4-10 hour days and take off Friday, you get 40 hours of regular pay and 8 hours of vacation pay. If you had worked 4-10’s and an 8 on Friday you would be paid 8 hours at your overtime rate. To do that 2 weeks in a row stinks.

I can assure you that no one is actively trying to make it difficult for people to attend. If you are sooo desperate to get people to attend on Saturday, I suggest that you get active in your local chapter, convince them to submit a bid for a Round Up, promote your Round Up dates, venue, and other attributes and get awarded the bid. Then the real work will just be beginning.
Most of you guys bellyaching about this issue have absolutely zero idea of what is required to host a show of this magnitude. I’d be willing to bet that most of you aren’t even involved in your local show. A show that is in the same location and time that it has been for years. Those shows are comparatively easy. RPRU is essentially a new show at a new location every year. Quit b******* and start helping. Otherwise be very thankful for the show we are blessed to have and the people who worked so hard to make it happen.

Do you have to be a member of a chapter?

Let me know please

Thanks Sam

I would love a pennsilvania new york or Massachusetts RPRU.

Pennsylvania or Ohio happens once every several years.  Sometimes both happens within a couple of years of another.  As I understand it labor is the stumbling block for NY as volunteers are far from sufficient to do the setup and cleanup from an event.  Some concern was had about sufficient lodging but with a probability of going in the Finger Lakes that puts Rochester and Syracuse fairly close.  Concern was also had about the lack of indoor space and even with the recent additions the Pageant of Steam facility in Canandaigua, NY may not be up to national standards.  A New England state would be a good idea but probably has similar drawbacks to what faces NY.  State chapters such as South Dakota and Missouri are well prepared to handle such events and are a reason why they get prime consideration.  To make people happy on the West Coast and deep South maybe consideration should be given to two RPRU events annually so more people could have it close to home.  Maybe make the Mississippi River the dividing line between a east show and west show.  Make the events seperate by a month to lessen strain on the national level in terms of people and resources.  West event could happen like normal in late June and east event would happen in late July.
