pt756 Posted March 25 Posted March 25 Guy that lived here in central wis, bought a place around Lehr. or Lear , North Dakota, hunting and fishing, knows about farming, so he told me today a nearby ranch just sold 500 Angus springing heifers, was told they averaged 5600, is that possible? didnt say the name of the ranch, got to be around where he lives though, Quote

Those ranches in that area are all big nice units. They probably had cooperating ranches with like cattle or the same bulls they group heifers up and bred them and sell. Quote
1256pickett Posted March 25 Posted March 25 Last fall I was hearing 4500-5000 for bred heifers, so for nice ones that are close I can see it. I was thinking of buying one or two last year to get my cow numbers up without taking away from my freezer beef, but at those prices I figured I’d be better off pulling a heifers off the freezer list and wait an extra year to get a calf rather than buy. Every cow I own was born here, why change that. 1 Quote

Jacka Posted March 25 Posted March 25 I can see it.Day old calves bringing $2500.I am not buying at that price.I am not saying its not a good long term investment but for me I am fine growing slow.I do use AI and like the calves.It's just amazing the genetic advantages of AI in beef cattle.I used AI exclusively in my Reg Jerseys.The difference is not as great though as you see in beef herds.I can't understand some of these new guys think that a bull is a bull.Some of the bulls they use and then want to sell you a bull to breed your cows with.No thank you. 1 Quote

Mike Yes I am going to have some upset customers if I have to cut them off. Last summer I knew I was going to be low on numbers so I put extra in my own freezer so I should be good for another year and a half. I have been known to visit those “grease temples” when I’m in a hurry but I haven’t bought at the grocery store for 15-20 years. Quote
