Letter series hydraulic question. Two way hydraulics?

I thought the letter series only had one way hydraulics but I saw this old AD that showed an M with two hoses.

So two way hydraulics were available on the letter series???

They could have a "Christmas Tree" valve installed, that gave you two way hydraulics. It was a dealer installed option, I'm not sure if any ever came from the factory that way.

I just happened to have a manual handy for the Stage I Super H, which would be the same belly pump setup as an H or an M. The proper technical term for the two-way hydraulics appears to be "remote control:"

they are listed in my 1950 price book at $106.00 so they could be ordered with that option

Back in the 1960’s, my dad put together a double acting hydraulic system on his 1948 M.  He tapped into the pressure port on the right side of the belly pump and used a double acting Char lyn valve mounted on the light bar.  The return line was plumbed into the reservoir fill port using a tee.  He had a couple of pioneer remote ports on the rear of the tractor.  I wasn’t aware that IH had offered that kit.  Thanks for the post!

Double acting hydraulics on a letter series are incredibly useful.

On my m diesel there is a 2 spool valve for two way but instead of going through the fill port it has a 90 going into the drain plug.

Our 1940 Farmall M had the Christmas Tree valve added to the belly pump at some point in its life.  The valve had a lever latch that would allow the valve handle to be locked so that the normal Lift-all lever could be used with single acting systems.  It was locked that way for 30 years when the tractor was under a mounted New Idea corn picker.

Thanks for all the information.  I didn't realize the letter series could have double acting hydraulics.  They are a vast improvement over single acting.

On my H I just plumbed in an open center valve. Lock back the control rod of the pump and then you have two way hydraulics. It’s not the IH valve but works fine. Definitely don’t have the greatest lift capacity but it works good on a small brush hog.

Dad's Super M-TA had two way from the factory.
