New Englander Posted June 20 Posted June 20 I've been fortunate that my skill level has always enabled me to work for a company with health benefits. My interview with Jenney Flight Engineering for my second A&P job (first was fly by night operator that I was smart enough to quit before the FAA shut it down) went like this: Welcome aboard. You start at $3.25, we pay half your Blue Cross and all the coffee you can drink. I worked lots of OT and a side job or two. Anyway, it only got a lot better from there. An A&P mechanic at an airline is a six figure job. A fully certified ATC controller is a six figure job. There's money and benefits out there, you just have to want it and work for it. Most McDonalds are franchised and generally offer health care. Here's one of many: https://www.muellermcd.com/healthandwellness It's pretty much the same for all the fast food restaurants. Maybe it's different elsewhere but around here they have trouble filling those positions and the help wanted signs show ever increasing starting wages. What used to be $12 has escalated to near $20., more for supervisors and openers/closer. I believe that if you're willing to better yourself with a trade or other skill there's little need to not have insurance. My wife and son's pregnancy/birth was big money and not a dime out of our pockets. As I age I use an increasing amount of coverage and happy that now my wife's policy covers most of it while mine in my working years covered it. Eventually when she retires it'll be a Medicare supplement. Quote

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. An example of gov regulation that benefits most all of us is the pre-existing conditions rule that does not allow insurance to deny you coverage. You have a job with insurance and get diagnosed with cancer and then lose your job because of excess absenteeism because of cancer. You get another job and the insurance won’t cover your cancer because it’s pre-existing. Should that be allowed to happen or should pre-existing conditions be covered? 7 hours ago, Binderoid said: Congress also doesn't enforce gun confiscation Not to get too far off topic or get into politics, but you need to look up who in the executive branch (the people who are in charge of law enforcement) said in 2018 he supported taking “the guns first, go through due process second.” Quote

Using the median tax paid would be somewhat more accurate. The bottom 50% of earners average about $1,000 in federal income tax paid while top 1% pay in significantly more because they make about 3x the amount of the bottom 50% combined. A more accurate representation is 64,000,000 * 1,000= 64 billion. 1 Quote

That also allows a deadbeat who doesn’t work and never had insurance to go get great coverage after he finds out he needs a lung transplant. Who can think of how that might cause a problem? I wonder why insurance premiums are so high? There were plenty of solutions to help people who actually needed it, but instead they just turned it into another giveaway to be paid for by people who are trying to be responsible. We always have to turn the entire system upside down because of an outlier example. My mother in law died of cancer two years ago. Her husband missed all kinds of work because of it and never faced any retaliation whatsoever. If it’s such a great policy who don’t we apply it to car insurance. I’ll just call and get full coverage an hour after I total my car. You think that would cause car insurance prices to skyrocket? Quote

Your point actually aligns with the idea that everyone should be required to have medical insurance to prevent that type of abuse. 5 minutes ago, Dirt_Floor_Poor said: Her husband missed all kinds of work because of it and never faced any retaliation You can thank the FMLA for that. Sorry to hear about your MIL. Cancer sucks. Another example is my son who was diagnosed with an extremely rare bone tumor when he was 19. The bone was removed but he will be monitored closely for the rest of his life. Should he be denied medical insurance for the rest of his life once he is no longer covered by my policy? Quote
Lazy WP Posted June 20 Posted June 20 I have been employed for 50 years. Out of those 50 years I’ve had company paid medical insurance 9 years by the company I worked for, and the last 9 years my wife’s company pays a portion of it. For the most part I have either worked in agriculture, which is not required to provide any benefits, or have been self employed. As for the younger generation of workers, blame their parents. I have 3 grandchildren who are working age, and all 3 have had a job of some sort since they were 14. I also have 2 nephews who are in their mid twenties who have NEVER worked. Their family farms, but those 2 can’t even help there. That is the parents problem. I hoped my kids wouldn’t have had to work as hard as I did, but they seem to have adopted my work ethic and have passed it onto their children. Quote

I have two children with Cystic Fibrosis. They will need lifelong care. Going over to my neighbors house and robbing him at gunpoint to pay for their medical care is not virtuous. Stealing money and then using it for a “good cause” doesn’t make it right, which is all these policies are doing. Like I said, there were solutions for high risk or very sick people without blowing up the entire system. Quote

Honestly I have only met 2 people who I believe are management material. They can get other people to work way beyond their abilities and feel great about it. The average manager should spend a lot more time on the end of a shovel to understand the situation. I don’t believe anyone said they should be forced to work, IF YOU DON’T WANT BENEFITS, but if you want the benefits you best work for them!! Quote

You are responsible for your own destiny not the government We already gave you a k-12 education There where vocational options in high school that should give you some work skills If the curriculum doesn't then we need to change it. There are after high school job training programs available for free If your kid can't make with that then I guess you have a failure to launch issue which is your problem. I left the house at 18 worked full time and put myself through college. So if I can do it then its not that hard. 1 Quote

766 Man Posted June 20 Posted June 20 In a perfect world there are jobs for everyone in any given community. But we do not live in a perfect world. A given person can have a lot of good qualities in terms of being an employee but not fit in or might be rejected in most situations. Many ill tempered people rise to positions of authority because their bosses confuse anger with intelligence. These people often are quick to blame others for their own failings and quick to fire to cover their own tracks. In a small community many people have a bad history with others including getting along (or the lack of) with a given individual due to school era issues or family or neighborhood feuds. In some communities there are flat out not enough jobs for everyone seeking one. 1 Quote
