Almost hit a Horse going to pick up the tractors this afternoon.

Had very close call on the way to the fairgrounds to pick up my Tractors. A on coming Amish  guy’s  horse bolted into my lane twice as I approached. The horse was fish tailed his cart trying to turn a run. He finally got control and went into a driveway as I passed by them .

i was lucky he did that .

I learned a lesson today , I’m going slow down going around and even when oncoming around these Amish rigs. Don’t need any more issues .

That horse is probably smarter than some of the human drivers these days…

I was driving to the farm a few years ago real early in the morning and came over a little crest and a horse stood up from the ditch where I think he may have spent the night.    He stepped into the road and I sent every piece of gear I had in the seat to the floor board.  
 

I’ve nearly hit a few deer over the years through there but I’d of never thought about a horse being in the road… 

 

I called the neighbor who knew the owner and he got put back in the pasture.   I know nothing about horses so I wasn’t going to try to mess with him.    Neighbors cows I’ve always run back in but I haven’t ever tried to run a horse back in.

When I was young, my father told me of his dentist being killed in a collision with a horse.

I believe the horse went up on the hood, and came in through the windshield.

Rather common for tall long legged animals like moose, and elk to do that as well. But all pickup trucks and many SUV's being taller too today maybe not as much as 30 and 40 years ago.

Very esay to do at night time remeber 42 years ago at 11 at night almost hit one on the highway, when I was with Dad

Any of these self driving vehicles are not to be trusted IMO, seems they have a mind of their own. 
That said, a wide percentage of people driven vehicles aren’t to be trusted either.. basically, stay home, it’s not safe out there.

We live in Amish country and have horse/buggy/vehicle crashes too often.  We just were on a call earlier this week with two horses vs a semi.  No human injuries but a bad day for the horses.

I know a couple people who have hit horses, one was killed, another, a friend of mine ruined a 68’ Camaro, but he was ok. Another lady hit a cow.. in broad daylight.. 1/2 mile from home.. and then there’s the occasional moose hit.

I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a moose in person.  
 

We don’t have those in southern Indiana.

I never had elk to dodge until USA Army and California Fish and Wildlife reintroduced them here 20 years ago. The 100,000 acre Camp Roberts base has lot more than it sustains. They don't what a good count. Nobody wants to talk about how many are hit by cars ether. One every few months along side the 4 lane 101 highway that I hear about. My guess is road kill in 2 years about equals the 40 they planted.  Most are closer but some are seen 10 miles from the base.

I have hit a number of our 120 to 150 pound blacktail deer. I am very scared of a 1000 pound bull elk. In theory they should not as tule elk be that big, but they are. Many suspect they are a hybrid with Roosvelt elk. One ranch that already had a special wildlife management plan in place before the elk were thought of has had 2 bull tags for better than 10 years. Once they figured out what they had ever bull has made it into some record book for tule elk.
