Just for the record. The engines gave up first. Would've thought the opposite sno, but given your many years of experience I believe you. 1 Quote
FarmerFixEmUp Posted August 14 Posted August 14 Sometimes it was hard to keep head gaskets in the 282 without a turbo, the turbo made it worse. 2 Quote

Difference between torque and horsepower. Those engines were turned up to 95 hp. Scored the cylinders and stuck the rings. If power had been backed down to 85 hp. He probably would have had to shift down a gear. That would have increased the torque on the rear end. Probably producing results you expect. 3 Quote

acem Posted August 15 Posted August 15 So you're suggesting we add a turbo to a D282 706 but leave the fuel settings factory to improve head gasket reliability? Quote

Well there you go. Pumps with factory settings are rare as hens teeth around here. Especially 706s because of the extra weight and other factors they seemed to be doggy but yes. The leaner a diesel runs. The cooler it runs. A turbo will burn that smoke turn it into power and cool at the same time. Does not work with the German. Turbo gains next to nothing until fuel is added. Meant to say at beginning. With factory pump settings. You shouldn't have much gasket problems anyway. It's the little extra that costs. Before I get flamed yes the 282 would have benefited from more head bolts. 2 Quote
acem Posted August 15 Posted August 15 Interesting thoughts. How did the factory turbo engines hold up? Ive never been around one. I do think the D301 would have preformed much better in trucks with a turbo and a little fuel. Quote

pete23 Posted August 16 Posted August 16 That was quite a while ago and I have no idea what the question was. My life has changed completely in the last three and a half years so I have not been or plan to be very active on this site. Pete 23 1 Quote
