Farmall 1466 Posted January 6 Posted January 6 Over here in Europe, we are in some serious cold weather for what we are used to. In the Netherlands, where I live, the temperatures are 6 to 7 degrees celsius colder than average and it is below freezing the whole day. We have gotten our first decent amount of snow in like 4 or 5 years. And with that, everything here is disrupted. No public transport, massive traffic jams, schools closed, our main airport (Schiphol) is nearly closed down etc. Not investing in infrastructure has consequences, eh?! And it is not just in the north-western part of Europe, its all over Europe. Heck, it even froze in Rome this week and mainland Spain got snow. These are some rare events. And we are not done yet. Another serious dump of snow is expected to hit us tomorrow in the Netherlands and again on Friday. For tomorrow, serious wind gusts are predicted too. The national weather institute has issued warnings and advised to stay off the road if you do not have to travel. Anyway, is north America in a similar cold spell or is the weather more like normal over there? Quote

yellowrosefarm Posted January 6 Posted January 6 We were way below average for a couple of weeks in early December with early snow, but now are above. Supposed to be almost 70 tomorrow when 40's is normal. The picture of the windmill in the snow is awesome 1 Quote
Diesel Doctor Posted January 6 Posted January 6 Here in South Dakota it will be in the low 40's, Fahrenheit, today. Our normal average is in the mid-20's. This January thaw is to continue into late January. Our snow will soon be gone, it is warm here and we are not complaining. Looks like you are getting our normal winter? 1 Quote

It is supposed to start thawing here after the coming weekend, but with some freezing still during the nights. I think towards the end of next week, we should be back around normal temperatures for the time of year (which is around 6 degrees Celsius, or low to mid 40's in fahrenheit during the day and around freezing during the night). Not sure what happens after next week, but some weather outlets are reporting colder temperatures once again. Should remain dry though which could make for some good ice skating weather. Quote

In degrees C we should be 3 to 4 on average, right now we are around 15, No snowfall, or rainfall really here either. We had a couple weeks of average winter weather in first part of december, but seems long ago. We can be very variable in winter though, more so than summer which seems to always be HOT here. For example, at my house on December 28 it was 22C for a high and on December 29 the high was -3C That was a shocker! 1 Quote
Oldironbestiron Posted January 7 Posted January 7 85°F here in West Texas, has been for a while we had one little baby snow storm that put some freezing rain out, but it was back to mid to high 70s the next day gonna be rough year here for cows and deer , 3” of rain all year, up by Snyder and Rotan they only got 9”, and they usually get around 20”ish feel free to send that snow over, we sure could use it Quote

iowaboy1965 Posted January 7 Posted January 7 Similar to others was snowy and had a below normal cold snap before Christmas. Then warmed up and was muddy and overcast the week of Christmas. Had snow every weekend 3 weeks In a row in December but now all gone. 40s yesterday Quote
53ihgarand Posted January 7 Posted January 7 I've been to the Schiphol couple times then on the train downtown. Beautiful country, would love to see it in snow. How's the canals doing there, do they freeze over very hard? Everybody pull their boats out? Your streets aren't really made for snow plows with all those cobblestones and narrow lanes. Quote
Farmall 1466 Posted January 7 Author Posted January 7 I do not live in or anywhere near Amsterdam but I found a sattelite photo made today of Amsterdam. As you can see, none of the canals are white, which should mean they are not frozen. I guess it did not get cold enough for that. 1 1 Quote
yellowrosefarm Posted January 7 Posted January 7 My nephew and his wife and son have been living in the Netherlands for a year. When he got the transfer offer they were in Minot ND. They thought they would be getting some relief from the cold.................. Overall, they are enjoying it, but will be glad to move back closer to family after 2 more years of being there. 3 Quote
Jacka Posted January 8 Posted January 8 In my part of Pennsylvania,south central mountains it is drier,warmer than normal.We need snow pack to fill the ground water,springs for the following summer.We haven't had a "normal" Pennsylvania winter for awhile.Our summers have been dry and the crops,creeks have suffered because of it .I would love to have your snow and cold.Thats what Pennsylvania is all about in winter. March comes than it warms up some,gets muddy and the air smells like spring.Still get snow than but unless we have had a good winter with lotsa snow pack it doesn't last. 2 Quote
Farmall 1466 Posted January 8 Author Posted January 8 Well, we are in for a change. Tomorrow, warm and cold air will collide right above the Netherlands. Not sure if it will be rain or (wet) snow, but either way, it will be a substantial amount. Things could get tricky with freezing rain and icy roads. The cold air does seem to win eventually and will push out the warm air. For the weekend, it will get seriously cold. -3 or -4 degrees celsius during the day and -10 degrees celsius or colder during the nights! Not something we experience often. Next week is still uncertain. Some weather models predict a continuation of cold weather while other models predict more average temperatures. Quote
TroyDairy Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Been ok here. Not really warmer than normal. Mid low 40s. 80% moisture. But def wetter than normal. More Seattle weather. Thats 2 hr S of us. We get N winds from the frozen tundra of The People "republic" of Canada. Then we are freezing and wet. 20s 40mph...and its miserable but..DRY. and if we get snow its a given we get wind so no sledding. It's bitting... My Grandfather in law left Friesland in 1944 45 and ended up here in NW WA (along with many Dutch,Lynden WA) because they felt it felt like Netherlands weather wise. Then got NE winds! 1 Quote
