Looking for info about upgrading turbo from a s2e to a s300 on a 5288 mfwd. Little back story here, found a 91 466, wide bearing,  roller cam,  rebuild it, added intercooler, mw inline pump, roller rockers and a few other goodies. We broke it in on the dyno pump came back set at 230hp. Decided to leave it ther for chopping last fall. egts were in the 1250-1300 range, bumped timing to 30* brought down to 1200-1250 and around18-19 psi boost. Put some hours on it put back on dyno and set to 275. Used it around 3 hours on fall tillage till the cheap head gasket sh.t the bed, so now its fire ringed. Using this spring egts at full tilt 1350-1420 and around 20-21lbs boost,  back it down to around  2000-2100 egts around 1250-1320 and around 20psi. Im thinking hot side might be choking it down, if you speed it up in neutral with no load around 2100 2200 it will make 10-12 psi boost. I have not had a chance to get a gauge in the hot side yet to see what its doing. Anyways theres so many s300 options i thought maybe some of you guys here would have a suggestion. Thanks

No advise here on the turbos but just wondering what you got your engine out of? Son got one for his 5288 MFD out of a combine that needed rebuilt. It was a reman so not an original. Got it done and had it on the planter all spring. That MW governor works way better than the ambac governor on my 5288.

The engine was a core that come out of a truck. The mw actually came off a combine that i had rebuilt and had a aggressive torque capsule installed. There is no comparison on the governor between this and the rotary, hardly any rpm drop now. I have another 52 that will be swaped to a inline this winter because of the so much better response

Nothing magic there. The AMBAC combine pumps go from high idle to full load in 100 rpm. The trade off is once you reach max there is nothing left. Almost no torque rise. Seems to fall flat on its face in overload.

Killing the old 5288. Seems like a lot of work to wear out an engine fast. Why not a 285 or 305? Seems like they would live longer. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Killing it...... hardly. The 52/54 drivetrain lived on all the way to the 305. A 466 with good turbo and fuel will make 300+ all day. 

He owns the tractor, have you priced a 305 with all its computer glories? I'd take the 52 all day, everyday.

My understanding is the MW is actually worse than an Ambac with a 10mm plunger? 

Why not go bigger ambac or P pump? 

S300's run real good on 400+ HP powerstroke's and they're just slightly less cubes, hard to get lit though.

I’m fully aware of what a 52/5488 is. Having owned 2, 5488s’. I still don’t see any real reason to run a 160hp tractor up to 300hp. It’s why they make bigger tractors. If ur going to rely on it to make a living with it. Why not keep it reliable.

Its the application.   Catch the word "chopping" in the OP post.   Almost every time I've seen guys that are that detailed in figuring out how to push HP for field use,  its because they are running a pull type silage chopper - and want all the PTO HP they can get.

I dont believe im killing it...this old gal will be running long after the 285 or 305 are in the junk yard

I don't think the MW is worse. The ambac might make more fuel with the right plungers but the rotary governor has nothing on the inline

This was built especially for the chopper. Alot of thought was put into it for longevity, im sure its not a 6000hour engine the way its built but if i get 3000-4000 hours im happy,  still way cheaper then a newer tractor with all the wiring and bs. Im not worried about field work because it pulls the same stuff the 1086 did just way faster

It will be great with the S300 on it now. Anyone saying the MW is no good is no in the know lol! They're likely assuming it's an MW with the RQV (truck) governor. His has an RSV (tractor) governor. FWIW the M100 is a 10mm plunger pump on IH applications with turbo. Only pulling pumps with custom modified hyd heads have a larger plunger in them. The old 11mm heads from old Mack applications are not very common, and don't pump much more then the IH 10mm heads.

Unless the chopper the OP is pulling is a big brute like a Dion or a NH FP240, the object of pity here should be the chopper.  A 50 series IH set at 250hp will destroy the chopper long before it destroys itself.

Realistically what is the HP limit for the MW pump? I own 1 in an S series truck,  and stupidly let 1 go from an 84 combine. The S series is next in line for a winter fun project,  want to push the limit.

stock ones are good to about 300hp I'd guess, been a while since I've had one on the stand. The problem is turning them up, you have to be careful to not go too far and get into the start retard. That could be part of the op's high egt issue, when getting into the start retard notches, the egt instantly climbs. When working in the field, if pulling easy it would not move the rack far enough to get retard, but hit a tough spot and it could move another mm and get into the start retard. Hopefully whoever he had calibrate it for him found that retard point and alerted him of it.

Its a 1285 gehl with processor and a dion 90" rotary head, since we're 22" rows we usually take 4 but sometimes if you can drive it right 5 rows is no problem. Book says 300 hp for chopper so i dont think were out of line

Miraculously they never said a word about the start retard, i wonder if you just hit the nail on the head . I had asked them to set it for around 275-300 but when it was put on the dyno it was only at 230, so im guessing 1680 specs plus 10% or around there. I put it back on dyno after about 17 hours of  run time and  timing up  another 4 degrees after the break in it was at 236. It only took a half turn to get it to 275, and theres quite a few threads left on the screw, in reality it probably don't mean squat on the threads. Funny thing i went back and asked them if there was anything messed up in the pump that would cause high egts and of course the answer was no. If the high egts continue after the new turbo you can bet you'll see this pump this winter

So how does that retard notch on an MW pump plunger compare to the notch in a model A pump on a 4440 or any other 466? Is the notch on an MW plunger straight up and down vertical like the Deere model A or angled? Reason I ask is there was a local puller several years ago that shade treed his pump to do full fuel on a 4440. When he'd get to the end and the sled hit hard and pulling him down it would start blubbering and blowing fire out the stack and fall on it face. It would sputter and and almost backfire. Always figured the plungers rotated as far as they would go like it was at startup.  If you hit that notch on an MW I would think you could obviously tell a major performance malfunction if the MW plungers were like the A pump on a 4440. I know Deere was big on that retard notch for starting fuel delivery so it delivered fuel as close to top dead center at startup and had that magnet to hold it there as long as it could until the governor got enough force to overcome the magnet then it would idle down then. I always thought they sounded cool on a cold day startup.  Some guys call it the Nuclear Start. Usually by the time I got my 7720 started the 1466's and the 5288 were already running without using either.

That would be about what a  NH FP240 was rated for.  We had an FP240 we used only on hay.  Pulled it with a stock 7140.  The chopper was boss there.  But we also had a NH 900 which has narrower feeding elements and cutter head, and on that the 7140 could over power it and start the processor chattering a little.  I figured if the processor was chattering (bearing housings lifting off the stop block against the springs) the processing job was being compromised.  I know a character that did his chopping with seriously turned up 5288s and NH choppers.  He would burn up processor belts in a day or 2.   

Biggest thing -- if you have a hopped up engine in a situation like that -- gotta keep the revs up.  Revs = horsepower, but more importantly airflow through the engine.  Lugging a turned up engine is a good way to help the mechanic make a boat payment.

The retard notch is similar in all inline pumps. Simply put, the top of the plunger is lower in the notch than the rest of the plunger, so when it rotates close to start fuel, the notch is in register with the spill port, requiring the plunger to lift more before closing the port, therefore retarding the beginning of injection for starting. When in the retard notch, many plungers are actually designed to pump less fuel in that position as well, by having the lower helix cut at a different height. Every application is a little different. 

If fuel screw is still out quite a ways, you are probably ok. Start retard can come in about 18 or 19mm of rack travel on a Bosch, some Denso EP9 pumps have it come in at 15mm, which really makes it so it cannot be turned up much, because peak torque is already at 14mm.

Is the Denso pump what Deere went to on the 55 series? Watched a still under warranty 4455 grenade a turbo at a tractor pull one time. Before he got it shut down it was blowing oil in the air out of the stack. He got out of the cab and was so shook up his knees were about knocking together. His wife was real proud of him too.

The EP9 I mentioned was used on 7150 & 7250, as well a 4955 & 4960 Deere. Other Denso A & P pumps have been used on Deere tractors along side the Bosch pumps back to the 40 series.

Disclaimer: The guy in this video isn’t a pump specialist, probably more shadetree, so use at your own risk. He has a few MW pump videos; avoid his “low rpm/excess fuel” one (bad advice in my opinion— I messed around and hit the start retard notch.  It seemed like a bad situation that could escalate quickly.

I used his tips (rack + aneroid) on my MW466 for fun. Rack set full forward; with an S2E it makes ~26 psi, feels like ~275–300 hp. At 9,500 lbs it accelerates like a ’90s pickup. EGT climbs past 1200°F but it’s just a toy—wouldn’t do this on a working tractor.

That seems like a lot of pump advance at 30deg?  I would be worried about lugging and cylinder pressure/headgasket.
