Will try it before as it is. It's an old Valk plow by the looks of the back framing. I wanted something to hook up in a few minutes instead of the others we have that take more time to hook on This was a set of q-attach plates from an auction. I have to get a set of two for anything else I want to put on the machine now. I've been using the loader for loading logs lately and I unload with the skid loader . I've been clearing a couple acres of hemlock to make new roof purlins during the cold weather. Hopefully it will be frozen enough to finish it up before spring arrives permanently 11 Quote
bitty Posted March 5 Author Posted March 5 Started to rehabilitate the grapple we have for the skid loader. I'm pretty sure it was made in China. Tubing on the bottom is ripped out of the back and the round tube is bowed .. was 3x3x3/16" and I am replacing that with 3x4x3/8" and going to schedule 80 on the pipe . 6 Quote

I bent my engine hoist and found that metric tubing is available but none locally and expensive to order. I straightened it and found some 3/8ths wall square tubing I could just force fit inside, drilled the holes, and called it done. Otherwise I was just going to rebuild it with available tubing bigger than the metric tubing. Not difficult but It won't bend again and I'll respect its limits. 1 Quote

I know that they manufacture steel in English dimension as a few years ago my steel supplier truck driver was complaining about the junk that was coming over the boat . He said that they had issues with suppliers trying to mix it in amoung their stock 1 Quote

Perhaps they even make stuff out of it but for a world market I would think they would use metric. Being so willing to sell though if some company in the US, pretty much the only folks still using fractional inch stuff, wanted it in fractional they surly would make it! There certainly is plenty of Chinese steel in the world. Quote
bitty Posted March 6 Author Posted March 6 I have a little more welding in the morning to do along with cleaning up the 6 gussets I cut on the torch table and weld them in the back bottom of each rake . They won't protrude in any further than the side plates do. 11 Quote
bitty Posted March 6 Author Posted March 6 Out of the shop . I postponed swapping the upper tubing as it's only twisted slightly. The grapples are not perfectly straight either but structurally okay yet . 7 Quote
midnightman Posted March 6 Posted March 6 What tires are you running? They look like they would be much better for ag applications than anything I have seen locally here. Quote

We have struggled with tires not lasting before a belt goes bad and they leak . We actually used to recap casings many times but they don't hold up anymore. This is probably the first set we've had of these hopefully they'll last? We've always been running this type tread in recent years. I hate skid loader tires that are R4's . We had galaxies more recently that were not holding up like they used to. Had Carlisle's they haven't held up lately 1 Quote

Hopefully I’ll get that done before next winter. Darn heavy plow, I’ll have to let some air out of the front tires when I take the plow off in a week or two. Matt 2 Quote

Matt We've had about five or six old plows. The first one we got was local to us and they bought it new in 1969 my wife's cousin was at the township then. That valk was much higher than this one and could really roll the snow out the side especially when you went fast Quote
bitty Posted March 27 Author Posted March 27 I'm trading some work with the neighbor. He is putting a used engine in my Colorado that he has in another one and I am going to shorten his 2022 trailer from 40' to 25' including the tail. So nervous cutting it as I keep looking at it thinking I'm cutting it way too short. There will be 20' of deck after I get done. It's going to get a new set of spring hangers and a few pieces of angle iron that cross and brace it that will be way easier to just replace than try to cut good enough to reuse. 4 Quote
bitty Posted March 27 Author Posted March 27 I see the screws are sheared off in the license plate mounting holes . Tail is off the tiger now I have to mark the cut better for what will be the end of the flat deck . The torque tube is going to be a few inches back into where the tail ramps down . I think I will work fine though 12 Quote
bitty Posted March 29 Author Posted March 29 I got it attached together yesterday. Monday I need to order the suspension brackets and I get a delivery from the steel supplier. I'm ready to carry it over to the shop and finish the welding from the top side. I'd then flip it over and finish from the bottom along with adding the axles back to it . 10 Quote
bitty Posted April 4 Author Posted April 4 I need to get it done. I haven't spent much time on it lately. It's in the shop now, axles off the old frame. I picked up new axle brackets the other day. Maybe get a chance to get some time on it the day before Easter 9 Quote
bitty Posted April 4 Author Posted April 4 Unfortunately I was busy doing a honey-do list and didn't get much time yet but I started to plate the joints. I made the plate close to twice the length of the original ones . I put weld through primer on the backside of the plate first 4 Quote
Gearclash Posted April 4 Posted April 4 This trailer looks remarkably similar to the unit you are working one. There should be a law against building a 40’ trailer with tandem singles unless the wheel is some kind of super single . . . 1 Quote

Our Dry hill manure pump is 42' long and would be light enough to haul on this trailer. It does have 12" I beams and I think our 24' (different brand) trailer is only 10" I'd guess Quote

Guy had a factory jig, can't do it without. Anyway, he was buying Cessna 150 training aircraft in various states of crashed and rebuilding them. I and another PT guy were doing wings. He made a trailer out of a burned mobile home. Planes are big/long and weigh very little. 1 Quote

I want to make a barrel train trailer out of my old junk 5th wheel camper as I have to unhook each barrel currently because of the loading angle on a gooseneck the hitches catch the angle iron. Problem is the barrel train is 43' long and the trailer would go to the front bumper on my pickup (long bed crew cab) ...... It would be an awesome way to haul it though. Quote

The airplane trailer out of the mobile home frame was pretty light and not suitable for much of anything else. It was decked with only 1X rough cut and he used some old mattresses for wing cushions. As I remember he got the burned hulk for zero. Quote

I was figuring on making two "rain gutter" looking troughs the wheels would ride in and use schedule 40 piping to truss it and it would only ever haul the barrel train. Pull the back of the back one to the top and the rest following, then back the tractor to it and strap it down. 1 Quote
