Sask466 Posted August 16 Posted August 16 From the town I grew up in: If anyone is curious “RCMP” is Royal Canadian Mounted Police. “On July 6, 2026, Livestock Services of Saskatchewan received a report of altered cattle brands at a farm located in the RM of Martin. An investigation was conducted by Moosomin RCMP, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Livestock Investigator, and Livestock Services of Saskatchewan (LSS). As part of the investigation, 197 head of cattle were inspected. Investigation determined that 99 head of cattle carried an altered brand being applied over-top of the original brand. The remaining 98 were branded fraudulently with a new brand. As a result of further investigation, an adult male was arrested. 52-year-old Kelly Stephen from the RM of Martin, SK is charged with: one count, altering a brand on cattle, Section 338(1), Criminal Code; and one count, fraud over $5000, Section 380(1), Criminal Code. Kelly Stephen is scheduled to appear in Moosomin Provincial Court on September 15, 2026.” Quote

Sask466 Posted August 16 Author Posted August 16 That’s a great question! And one I dont know if I have ever thought about before. In our Province (basically equivalent to a State) we have Rural Municipalities. Not all provinces were surveyed the same. It’s basically a section of area in the province (typically several townships). A township being defined by 6 x 6 miles. Most of western Canada was surveyed on the “Dominion Land Survey” which breaks land down by section, range and merdian and based off of 1 mile. A township is 6 miles north-south and a range is 6 miles east-west. So an RM is usually maybe like 18 miles by 18 miles. It may have cities, towns and villages within it. A small town (in this case Moosomin), is considered “The Town of Moosomin” and is within the “RM of Moosomin”. Note that there are lots of small towns that have have disappeared, so a bigger town may have several RM offices within it. 1 1 Quote
naedlaen Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Your RM sounds similar to a county here in the USA. Most of the USA west of the Appalachian Mountains is surveyed as you described. Thirty-six square miles (6x6) for a township along several principal meridians. Teir (north or south) and range (east and west). Counties vary in size, typically based on population. Across the prairies, counties are often 16 townships (4x4) with a county seat. Major rivers sometimes caused a variation to the size and shape of both. It was just that I had not heard the term Rural Municipality before and did not go further than determining what RM stood for. Thank you for your detailed explanation. As with the British it seems that Canada and the USA might be separated by a common language. Here boots hold feet and in England suitcases. Neal Quote

Neal That’s interesting how all the plains seem consistent, either side of border. When you go out east it gets way more confusing I believe. And Quebec was under the French, so the land survey is completely different system. Quote

I was thinking the same thing- except with our weaker dollar, I am sure he easily peaked $0.5 million. The scale and logistics of doing it are hard for me to understand (grew up on a grain farm, I have zero cattle experience). Quote
