sandman4077 Posted May 23 Posted May 23 Hello, new here to the site. Thanks. I recently bought a 1086 that has the TA elimination kit installed. The clutch engages at the very end of pedal travel making things kind of tough for smooth operation. I have replaced the cab mounts and cannot get the adjustment right. My question is do I need the dump valve connected and adjusted with the elimination kit? Quote
sandman4077 Posted May 23 Author Posted May 23 Also having problem setting the free play, I have adjusted the linkage coming off of the bellhousing down to clutch. turning the adjustment screw ccw and I only can get about 9/16 play measuring at the arrow on pedal to firewall. Quote
Matt Kirsch Posted May 25 Posted May 25 Sounds to me like the main clutch is at the end of its life. That's the case when you can't adjust in enough free play. Dump valve does nothing if there's no TA. With a TA it relieves the binding in the transmission so you can shift it. Quote
axial_al Posted May 25 Posted May 25 IH offered a small brace that went from the cab to the clutch pivot point because movement of the cab made clutch engagement erratic. That could be what you are experiencing if your 86 doesn’t have it. I suppose salvage yards might be the only source these days. Good luck. Quote
sandman4077 Posted May 25 Author Posted May 25 Ok, I will look for the cab support, Matt I had a feeling that the clutch was about gone. I really appreciate the responses! Thanks! Quote
snoshoe Posted May 25 Posted May 25 If your bellcrank is mounted to the bellhousing. You really want that bracket Al is talking about. It moves bellcrank from bellhousing to cab so it goes up and down with the cab. Makes a big difference especially backing up to something. Quote
HydroTek Posted May 25 Posted May 25 Would also be a good time to check the clutch cylinder adjustments -- disconnect the cylinder lower rod and see that the upper pin is free to move with the pedal in home position -- when connecting the lower rod , be sure the bellcrank is slightly down , looking at the bottom edge Quote
sandman4077 Posted May 25 Author Posted May 25 I am definitely going to look for the support bracket, I will check with the dealer here and see if by chance still available. HydroTec, I will double check that adjustment as well. Did notice vertical movement in cylinder when pressing clutch pedal. The movement is in the grommets on the lower mount of cylinder. Probably a 1/8” of slack there, is that enough to cause a problem? Quote
IDPlowboy Posted May 26 Posted May 26 The clutch bracket # is 1253168C1 looks like a good # yet. If you get a used one the early bracket only had one ear and the later ones had 2 ears where the pivot bushing goes. There was a kit to update them don't think it is available, the part # for it is 77744C91. Quote
sandman4077 Posted May 26 Author Posted May 26 Yes it was a good number and have it on order, will give update after I get it installed. Thanks! Quote
acem Posted May 26 Posted May 26 Good cab mounts are important. The bracket should help but the clutch on a non TA tractor should work fine without it if the cab mounts are good. Most of these tractors have cab mounts that are approaching half a hundred years old... Quote
sandman4077 Posted May 26 Author Posted May 26 Haha! Yes they were bad on front before we changed them out. Probably half a hundred years old! I am going to install it, if it helps a little that might get me by this year anyway. Hopefully, Thanks Quote
1480x3 Posted May 27 Posted May 27 I have replaced the cab mounts on my 1486 twice. Have never done them on my 186, it is "loose" but everything still functions satisfactorily. Quote

Honestly I can not see how this thing mounts on my 76 yr. model. The dealer wasn't much help! Quote
HydroTek Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Remove the bellcrank and position the bracket in the spot where the bellcrank was there should be 2 holes on the firewall for the bracket and another under the floor mat -- may need to drill that one as earlier cabs did not have that hole did the bracket come with a new bell crank ? -- if not you can grind a relief in the old bellcrank to miss the bracket -- do this fitting off the tractor Quote
sandman4077 Posted June 8 Author Posted June 8 Thanks, it did not come with a new bell crank. I will look for those mounting holes. Quote
mrfred54 Posted June 8 Posted June 8 If you put a jack under the cab frame just behind the step and then remove the cab mount from the transmission housing and get it out of the way this will make it a lot easier. Been many years since I’ve done one but I always removed the cab mount Quote
