Back in the 70's l subscribed to Overdrive for a couple of years. l'd be lying if l said l didn't enjoy the cover girls, but the main reason l subscribed was the 2 or 3 pages of pics of model trucks people sent in that they had built. One month l had pics in that section of a Pete 359 and a Pete cab over 352. Both was painted to match, a two tone blue. Wish l could find a copy of that particular month so l could have those pics.

On the #UnitedStatesMarineCorps birthday, we honor a truck designed to meet the Corps’ toughest demands — the International M-5H-6 2½-ton 6×6.
The designation breaks down as M = “military,” 5 = “five-thousand-pound capacity,” and 6 = “six-wheel drive” — a simple code for a purpose-built machine. One of the few tactical trucks created specifically for the Marines, the M-5H-6 reflected their need for rugged reliability across island terrain where roads were rare and conditions unforgiving.
Developed by International Harvester during World War II, the M-5H-6 was engineered for the Marines’ unique operational needs. Though the Corps requested it, the trucks were procured through the U.S. Navy, since the Marines operated under the Navy Department during the war. That’s why many carried both Navy and Marine data plates, even when built strictly to Marine specifications.
Designed for Pacific island campaigns where terrain could shift from mud to coral in a mile, the M-5H-6 featured a waterproof 6-volt electrical system and shielded ignition components to survive tropical humidity and salt spray. Its air-assisted hydraulic brakes provided confident control on steep or unstable ground, while a front-mounted 10,000-pound Gar Wood winch, driven from a power-take-off, gave it the self-recovery muscle Marines depended on in combat zones.
The truck was also equipped for the kind of wet, punishing environments few vehicles could handle. The M-5H-6 could ford up to 42 inches of water without modification — nearly to the base of the windshield — and could go even deeper with field sealing.
The Operation & Maintenance Manual instructed operators to extend vent lines, grease universal joints, and check all waterproof connectors before amphibious operation. Every electrical component, from the generator and starter to the ignition coil, was moisture-sealed, and spark plugs and distributor caps were fitted with rubber gaskets and shielded wiring to keep out salt spray. The air cleaner was positioned high and could be fitted with a snorkel-type extension for surf landings, while vented caps and drain plugs allowed the drivetrain to equalize pressure and shed condensation after wading.
Everything about the truck reflected rugged practicality. It rode on 9.00×20 combat rims with lock-ring wheels — heavier than comparable Army designs but stronger for rough volcanic terrain. Field service was straightforward; as the manual noted, “no special tools are required,” and more than sixty grease fittings were placed for easy access — clear proof of International Harvester’s focus on keeping Marines moving even when supply lines ran thin.
The M-5H-6 chassis supported numerous variants — cargo, dump, wrecker, fuel, telephone maintenance, radio, and decontamination units — many outfitted for deep-wading amphibious work. From Guadalcanal to Okinawa, these trucks hauled gear, towed artillery, and powered communications across some of the harshest environments of the war.
Between 1943 and 1945, International Harvester built roughly 10,000 M-5H-6 trucks under Navy contracts. Built for the Marines. Supplied by the Navy. Proven across the Pacific.
The M-5H-6 remains one of WWII’s most distinctive tactical vehicles — a rare machine purpose-built for the Corps and remembered for its strength, simplicity, and fidelity in service.

I suspect there may have been a better lot that attracted the higher priced cars

That was a bummer

If you think of just putting rubber on it and how many other trucks you could put new rubber on with that money it makes sense. That is the dilemma of managing a collection.

I kinda have the same situation to many cars trucks and tractors to feed.

Is that a pony motor drive mixer? Started out on those. One A car and two Int with Chrysler Ind flat 6 for mixers.

The "Abandoned Steam Engine" of the Great Smoky Mountains is a real steam-powered traction engine that still rests in a creek bed deep inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This Nichols and Shepard engine was used in the 1920s to run a sawmill that cut lumber for the old Greenbrier School. On its trip back down the mountain, the driver missed a sharp switchback, sending the engine rolling into Injun Creek, where it remains today. The creek’s name comes from a mapmaker who misspelled “engine.” You can reach the site by hiking the Grapeyard Ridge Trail, a 5.8-mile round trip that also passes the old Greenbrier community. One of the most interesting old sights you'll see in the Smokies!
